1. INTRODUCTION

A request was received from the client to test supplied samples of Verde Austral granite considered representative of proposed supply to the St. Georges Terrace project. The test program was based on the natural stone test schedule in Section 8.3.2 of Appendix B of the City of Perth “Standard Requirements for the Testing of Granite/Basalt”. 2. TEST PROGRAM

The appropriate specimens were prepared by Stone Initiatives from the supplied samples and the following test work was undertaken:

• Water Absorption • Bulk Specific Gravity • Modulus of Rupture • Compressive Strength

Bulk specific gravity and water absorption were determined in accordance with ASTM C97-09 "Standard Test Methods for Absorption and Bulk Specific Gravity of Dimension Stone". The specimens had been dried at 60 ± 2°C for 48 hours followed by soaking at 22 ± 2°C for a further 48 hours. The modulus of rupture of each specimen was determined in accordance with ASTM C99-09 "Standard Test Method for Modulus of Rupture of Dimension Stone”. The dry specimens had been dried at 60±2˚C for 48 hours prior to testing. The soaked specimens had been immersed in water for 48 hours at 22±2˚C. The surface in tension had been diamond sawn. The compressive strength was determined in accordance with ASTM C170-09 "Standard Test Method for Compressive Strength of Dimension Stone”. The dry specimens had been dried at 60±2˚C for 48 hours prior to testing. The soaked specimens had been immersed in water for 48 hours at 22±2˚C.

3. RESULTS Results are summarised in the table below and compared with the ASTM specification for granite dimension stone; full test data are detailed in Appendix A of this report.

Discussion

The samples of Verde Austral tested comply with all of the measured physical requirements of ASTM C615-03 “Standard Specification for Granite Dimensions Stone”.

The actual compressive strength of the Verde Austral samples may be higher than that reported for the stone due to the effects of the level of specimen preparation (lack of squareness and corner chips) of some samples supplied.
