Components of this Standard
• Written Respirator Program
• Medical Evaluation
• Fit Testing
• Training
• Program Evaluation
• Recordkeeping
National Fit Testing Services
Written Respiratory Protection Program
• Designate a program administrator
• Develop a written program with worksite-specific procedures
• Provide respirators, annual fit testing, training, and medical evaluations
• Update program annually
National Fit Testing Services
Medical Evaluation• Employer must provide a medical evaluation to
determine employee’s ability to use a respirator.
Key Point: This is before fit testing, use of respirator and thereafter based on the physicians recommendations.
National Fit Testing Services
Fit TestingBefore an employee uses any respirator with a tight-fitting face piece, the employee must be fit tested and trained on the same make, model, and size of the respirator to be used. All respirators must be approved by NIOSH
National Fit Testing Services
Respirator Selection• Must be NIOSH
certified.
• Must be selected to protect against the specific hazards of the work environment.
• Various sizes and models must be available so that all employees have respirators with proper fit.
All respirators, cartridges, and equipment must be
NIOSH certified.

Powered Air-Purifying Respirators (PAPR)
• This is a loose-fitting face piece powered air-purifying respirator, or PAPR. A PAPR has a blower that pulls air through attached filters. The blower then pushes the filtered air into the face piece, which covers all of the user's face.
• Since it is loose-fitting, it does not need to be fit tested and can be used by workers with facial hair.

Types of Cartridges
• Particulate cartridges filter out dusts, mists and fumes only.
• Chemical cartridges trap different types of chemicals, but not dust, mists or fumes.
• Cartridges are color-coded for the type of chemical or dust.

Annual Fit Testing and Training
• Employers must provide annual training to employees who are required to use respirators.
• Basic advisory information must be provided to employees who wear respirators when use is not required by this standard or by the employer
National Fit Testing Services
Annual Fit Testing and Training
Employees who are required to use respirators must be trained prior to use and annually
Why and when the respirator is used and limitations of use
Inspection, donning and doffing and seal check
Cartridge change schedule
Maintenance and storage
Recognition of medical signs and symptoms that may limit or prevent effective use

Importance of Maintaining Seals
For proper respiratory protection, the seals on the face piece must be maintained:
•Employees may not have facial hair under the sealing surfaces of the face piece.
•Facial hair cannot interfere with valve function.
•If an employee wears glasses or PPE while using respirators, it must be worn in a manner that does not interfere with the seals.
This person will need to shave before using a
respirator.
