The first few months of 2009 were filledwith planning and execution of the 25th annual Golf, Air WarfareSymposium and Gala. But as usual, all three events culminated intotal success. A special thanks goes to Bob Ceruti and JimDeRose for setting up the Golf Outing and to Tommy Harrisonas our Gala Chairman. Bryan Paul, our treasurer, was of courseinvolved with all the money transactions for all the events andworked with Marty Harris on the Gala videos. To all of them, weowe a special thanks for their hard work and a thank you to manyothers in the chapter and the AFROTC cadets that contributed tothe successful events.

Only through the above events can the Central Florida Chap-ter continue to support the many and diversified educationalprograms that we, as a chapter, participate in annually.

Of special interest is our upcoming quarterly dinner programto be held June 12th at the Marriott Downtown Hotel. Our guestspeaker for the program is going to be General Craig McKinley,Chief, National Guard Bureau. General McKinley, as you mayrecall, was an AFA Director and the AFA Florida State President. He is also the first Air Force general to head the Bureau and the firstfour star in that position. Let’s all come out to the event andwelcome the general home to Florida. We are attempting to getother professional and civilian groups to attend, but we need thesupport and attendance of our 1440 chapter members to reallymake this event a success. More details on the front cover. Areservation form is included on page 9 for you to sign up. Yes, itis about a month away, but get your reservations in early.

Take care! Jim Callahan

AFA’s annual AFJROTCDrill Competition just held atUCF was a great success. Therewas keen competition betweenindividuals, drill teams, and colorguard teams representing 17 highschool AFJROTC units fromacross the state. It was great to seeyouth who dedicated themselvesto master these skills.

A clear winner, cadetsof the FL-9311 AFJROTCunit at Hialeah HighSchool (from Miami) re-ceived the Top Four Tro-phies. These skilled cadetswere trained by greatAFJROTC leaders includ-ing MSgt Barry Haines,MSgt Efrain Perez and MajGlenwood Barbee.

The last week of Februarythe Air Force Association and theCentral Florida Chapter cel-ebrated twenty five years of whathas become the premier annualevent for both organizations. Theoutstanding support of the AirForce, aerospace industry andRosen Shingle Creek Hotel in-sured another great year for theseevents.

Overcoming a very demand-ing schedule, Secretary of the AirForce, Michael B. Donley andAir Force Chief of Staff, GeneralNorton A. Schwartz, made a spe-cial effort to attend both the Sym-posium and the Gala. We werealso very fortunate to have ChiefMaster Sergeant of the Air Force,Rodney J. McKinley in atten-dance at both.

Thirty-nine aerospace indus-try associates filled over 18,000square feet of exhibit space withthe very latest in technology andinnovation. Over 800 individu-als attended the Air Warfare Sym-posium and just under thatamount attended the Air ForceGala. Included were all of the AirForce four-star General Officersand many civilian leaders of theUnited States Air Force. Alsoattending were a significant num-ber of military attaches of foreigngovernments and high level in-dustry leaders. The top AFA lead-ership included Joseph E. Sutter,Chairman of the Board, JamesR. Lauducci, Vice Chairman ofthe Board, Field Operations, S.Sanford Schlitt, Vice Chairmanof the Board, Aerospace Educa-

tion, and Michael M. Dunn,President/CEO.

Due in a large part to ourindustry partners, we are able tocontinue our support for educa-tion and the Air Force. Over thepast twenty-five years the CentralFlorida Chapter has raised morethan two and one-half milliondollars for aerospace education atall levels. This year a $65,000contribution was again providedAFA for its aerospace educationprograms. In addition, the chap-ter continued its contribution of$10,000 to the Air Force Memo-rial Foundation, bringing thechapter’s total donations to$220,000. AFA President/CEO,Mike Dunn accepted the dona-tion. Showing support for thismemorial to Air Force airmen, past, present and future by par-ticipating in the presentation wereSecretary Donley, GeneralSchwartz, and Chief Master Ser-geant McKinley.

The Central Florida Chap-ter saluted “25 Years of Air ForceGalas” by presenting Air ForceAssociation Education Fellow-ships recognizing the efforts ofmany involved in developing thefirst event as well as those making

a significant impact on its suc-cess to date. Doolittle Fellowawards were given to NormanAbramson, John Combs (ac-cepted by his widow, Elaine), JimDeRose, and Richard Ortegawhile Arnold Fellowships wereawarded to Bob Ceruti, MartyHarris , Tommy Harrison, andBryan Paul. Martin Marietta wasrecognized as the primary indus-try whose support significantlyhelped to bring about the firstGala. Mr. Ralph D. Heath, Ex-ecutive Vice President of Lock-heed Martin Aeronautics, ac-cepted an H. H. Arnold Fellow-ship for Martin Marietta, nowLockheed Martin.

To close the evening, a videowas shown recalling entertain-ment from previous Galas. Thiswas followed by a parade of col-ors including the fifty state flags. While cadets from AFROTCunits at the University of CentralFlorida, the University of SouthFlorida, and Embry-Riddle Aero-nautical University carried theflags, Glen Gettings, Presidentof Gettings Productions and along time supporter of the Chap-ter, sang a dynamic patrioticsong, ending with all attendeesrising to sing The Air Force Song. This was a most impressive end-ing for an exceptional evening.

Not the least of events sup-porting this week of intense ac-tivity was the annual golf outingheld at Disney’s Palm and Mag-nolia golf courses on Wednes-day, the day before the sympo-sium. Nearly 200 golfers teed offon what could be called a“Florida Chamber of Com-merce” perfect day. Cadets fromthe University of CentralFlorida, under the direction ofCadet Colonel Erica Black andthe watchful eye of CaptainWardrias Little, assisted withthe registration, distributed“goodie bags” and lunches andmanned refreshment stands onthe courses. This golf mixerallows our industry members tosocialize with numerous mili-tary leaders as well as other in-dustry associates. Prizes wereprovided through industry do-nations and presented thatevening at a reception.

Success for an event of this

caliber does not come without asignificant amount of effort froma few strong leaders guiding oth-ers. Bob Ceruti and Jim DeRosemake the coordination with in-dustry and the alignment of golf-ers look easy. Bryan Paul andMarty Harris work with GettingsProductions in producing firstclass video presentations. Bryanalso handles the chapter financeswhich processes over a half mil-lion dollars through the chaptertreasury. AFA staffers KatieStorm, Meghan McClelland andMelinda Rutkosky work registra-tion and banquet coordinationwith personal commitment.

The Central Florida Chapteris extremely fortunate to havededicated individuals of this cali-ber working these events. If youare technologically savvy andwould like to participate in theseactivities, please contact me [email protected] or 407-886-1922.

CIAS hosts the highly acclaimedNational Collegiate Cyber DefenseCompetition (NCCDC). The CyberPatriot winners from Orlando willtravel to San Antonio in April toobserve the NCCDC and partici-pate as “White Team” members.

Future plans call for the compe-tition to expand next academic yearto more AFJROTC/CAP unitsacross the country with the ultimategoal of opening nationwide to allhigh schools with links to theNCCDC.

The Phase II Cyber PatriotCompetition is scheduled for Febru-ary 18th and 19th, 2010, again inconjunction with the AFA Air War-fare Symposium.

Follow the Sun: AFA Orlando Golf...by Bob Ceruti and Jim DeRose, Co-Chairmen

The golf event which kickedoff the Central Florida Chapter's25th Anniversary of supportingAFA's Air Warfare Symposiumwas a far cry from its initial ac-tivity. Originally, there wereabout ten foursomes vying for afew golf shirts and several dozengolf balls as prizes.

This year, with a little overtwo hundred teeing it up on boththe Magnolia and Palm golfcourses at the Walt DisneyWorld Resort, the golfers en-joyed beautiful weather, twoexceptionally well manicuredcourses, plenty of beverages andsnacks, and pairings with play-ers from other companies, all ofwhich made for a thoroughlyenjoyable afternoon.

The awards program fol-lowed the golf at the RosenShingle Creek Hotel, the hostlocation for the symposium. Anexceptional buffet dinner wasprovided to the players and theirguests prior to the prize distri-bution. Twelve teams from eachcourse were awarded gift certifi-cates from The Golf Warehouse, which can be redeemed on line.Additionally, gift certificateswere given for the shot closest tothe pin and the longest drive oneach course for atotal of 102 prizes.

Strong sup-port from theaerospace indus-try made this pos-sible and their ex-ecutives wereavailable to assist

in the prize distribu-tion. The sponsorswere: NorthropGrumman, Lock-heed Martin, TheBoeing Company,Harris, Raytheon,Pratt and Whitney,General Dynamics .For the f irst t imeSikorsky andGoodrich joined thesupport network.

An event of thismagnitude doesn'ttake place without agreat deal of planningand support. Severalmembers of the Cen-tral Florida Chapter were veryhelpful: Mike Liquori, BryanPaul, Richard Ortega, TomWalters, Dennis Moran, andCol Bill Palmby.

The Air Force ROTC unitfrom the University of CentralFlorida has provided enormoussupport every year for over 20years. Cadet Erica Black, firstsemester Wing Commander, and Capt. Wardrias Little, Com-mandant of Cadets, led a groupof 25 cadets who prepared agoody bag for each player, wel-comed and assisted VIPs and

players, supported registration, handled the box lunches, andmanned all of the refreshmentareas on both courses. They alsoparticipated in and supportedthe awards program.

The golf event has grownin quality and size so that itnow complements the extraor-dinarily successful black tie Galathat the chapter hosts as thefinal event of the symposium. The attendees have come to ex-pect that the Central FloridaChapter events are first class. The improvements and inno-

vations each yearmake the AirWarfare Sympo-sium in Orlandothe industrialassociate's firstchoice of events toattend on theAFA calendar.
