However, the Council once again decided not to increase its fees and charges for the use of its facilities, including burial fees etc. for 2015/16. The increase in Council Tax is necessary, says the Town Council, because of the loss of £17,030 in grants from Durham County Council, in respect of the Local Council Tax Reduction Scheme, due to cuts being made by the Coalition Government. A spokesperson explained: “This means that it is increasingly difficult to maintain services without increasing Council Tax levels, especially since this grant is not guaran- teed for future years and it is expected that it will reduce further. “Freezing or even reducing Council Tax could lead to deep cuts having to be made to the vital services that the Council provides, for example parks and playing pitches, allot- ments, bus shelters, and so on.” Derek Snowball, Ferryhill Town Clerk added: “We are faced with an ever in- creasing storm of cuts and higher demands on our services and duties. “Council Tax will always be an area of contention but difficult decisions must be made to protect our facilities and services. “Without this small increase in the precept the budget would be further reduced, making the Council less resilient to future budget demands and reductions.” Small Council Tax rise for Ferryhill FERRYHILL BUSINESS & ENTERPRISE COLLEGE Merrington Road, Ferryhill, Co Durham, DL17 8RW Tel: (01740) 651554, Fax: (01740) 654980 email: [email protected] website www.fbec.co.uk Inspiring learners to succeed as enterprising individuals Headteacher: Kevin Brennan Cleaning Vacancy 12.5 hours per week Grade 1 - £7.43 per hour Further details and an application form are available from the school office and are also available on the school website www.fbec.co.uk following the link to Vacancies. The tides of life they ebb and flow,

Riding the waves is the way to go,

Washed up in time one fails to see,

The source of life was meant to be.

Fate does not play a part,

Time spells the season,

When destiny touches your heart,

Displaying the rhyme and reason.

No flotsam or jetsam am I,

Having survived the raging sea,

I know in the blink of an eye,

Where destiny meant me to be.

The moving finger writes,

Minus the throes of harm,

For sleep through peaceful night

And days of endless calm.

Pendeen is a special place.

Its views over the seas for free.

Seen through a glass darkly, then face to face,

While unveiling the truth of destiny.

God moves in mysterious ways,

His wonders to perform,

He shows that in the light of day,

Calm always follows the storm.

FBEC students ensure ‘Arena Gig’ is a sell out

Year 9 students at Ferryhill Business and Enterprise College were lucky enough to take part in an exciting enterprise challenge set by Durham Education Business Partnership last week called ‘Arena Gig’. In groups of eight, students took on the role of an Events Management company to organise a concert at Newcastle’s Metro Radio Arena. The most popular act by far was Ed Sheeran, with students choosing a range of support acts such as Rita Ora, Bruno Mars and Ariana Grande. Students used a variety of enterprise and employabil-ity skills such as teamwork, communication and time management to design a floor plan, flyer and ticket for the event. Creativity skills were put to the test with wrist bands and back stage passes being created as well as

hair, costume and make up for the A list celebrities!Tyler Johnson said, “I really enjoyed Arena Gig. The best part about the day was working in teams on a music related topic which we are interested in.”The day culminated in each group presenting their ideas to their peers and Business Ambassadors from livin, the Royal Navy and Durham County Council. The winning group was team 13 who consisted of Cameron Brownlie, Danny Dunn, Rachel Hawman, Tyler Johnson, Daniel Nattrass, Emily Roddam, Nathan Stryan and Nicole Wilkinson. They impressed the judges with the design of their gig with Arctic Monkies as the headline act, supported by Fall Out Boy.Miss Gibson, Director of Learning for Business and Enterprise at FBEC said, “I am extremely proud of

the Year 9 students who worked incredibly hard throughout the event.Their ideas and designs were very creative and the confidence and com-munication skills evident throughout the presenta-tions was very impressive.”Sandra Stephenson, the Business & Learning Co-or-dinator from Durham Edu-cation Business Partnership who led the event said, “It was a pleasure to work with the Year 9 students at Ferryhill Business & Enter-prise College. “They were highly moti-vated, enthusiastic and approached the tasks in a positive manner. “They demonstrated a very good standard of em-ployability skills and the Business Ambassadors who supported the activity said they enjoyed working with the students and were im-pressed with their positive attitude.”

Team 13 of Ferryhill Business and Enterprise College’s Year 9 were declared winners in the school’s Events Management ‘Arena Gig’ enterprise challenge.

Valentine’s Ball

Suspicious package at Ferryhill

Appearing before magis-trates at Newton Aycliffe, Scott Wilkin, of Peats Buildings, Coxhoe, was sentenced to a six month conditional discharge and was ordered to pay £50 in compensation to the shop owner, as well as £85 court costs and £15 victim support surcharge. The 22 year-old had pre-viously pleaded guilty to stealing a Bluetooth

speaker from Starks Com-puters & Games in Ferry-hill, on 27th November. The defendant has a number of breaches of both suspended sentences and conditional discharges and was said to be the father to six children, three of which were his own, and because of his personal circumstances, would have great difficulty in carrying out unpaid work.

Denehurst Nursing Home in Merrington Lane is organis-ing a Valentine’s Day Ball (although not everyone will be dancing!) on Friday 13th February from 2pm.A spokesperson said: “The

event is open to residents and their family members are also welcome to go along. “There will be raffles, champagne, a buffet, and a live female singer.”

Firefighters were called to Ferryhill police station on Friday morning, 6th February, after a member of the public brought in what was thought to be a suspicious package.A spokesperson said: “We can confirm that a suspi-cious package was sent to a member of the public in

Ferryhill on Friday morning. This was then taken to the police station. “We contacted the relevant agencies including the fire brigade who attended to assess the situation. The package was deemed non-suspicious. We would like to thank the public for their patience.”

Constabulary seeks ‘Checkpoint’ groups

Friday lunch in aid of The Chapter

‘Checkpoint’ is a new initiave being operated by Durham Constabulary which aims to reduce the number of victims of crime by reducing re-offending, which will also make all our communities safer places to live and work. The programme is designed to tackle the underlying causes of crime and support offenders so that they change their ways. Individuals deemed suitable for the scheme

enter into a ‘contract to engage’ and commit to completing voluntary work as part of the programme.Durham Constabulary is looking for organisations to work with it to deliver these work placements.A spokesperson said: “If you are a voluntary sector organisation that works in County Durham or Dar-lington and have a desire to improve the lives of others and the wider com-munity, and are interested in working with Durham Constabulary and partners on the Checkpoint pro-gramme, then we would love to hear from you.“Please contact Detective Inspector Andy Crowe or PC Adam Norris by email on [email protected] for more information.”More information about the scheme can be found on the Durham Constabu-lary website at www.durham.police.uk. Click on the Information & Advice tab and then click on the ‘Checkpoint’ tab on the left hand menu.

Chilton keeper scores on and off the pitch

Half term sports at local leisure centres

An under strength Chilton side entertained Wash-ington Cross Keys in what turned out to be an eventful game for the side’s usual first choice goalkeeper, Bradley ‘The Cat’ Wilkinson. A shortage of players due to injury meant that, with the minimum available, Wilkinson was forced to play as centre forward. The stand-in striker took no time in making his mark at the opposite end of the field, scoring in the first minute when he outpaced the centre back to slot calmly passed the keeper.

Youngsters in Ferryhill and Chilton can fill up the first half-term break of the year with a range of sports or-ganised by Durham County Council. The “Your Sport Your Patch” activities on offer (Monday 16th February to Friday 20th February) include a junior training camp with the Durham Wildcats basketball team, cricket, netball and football. In addition to these open events there is also a one-day Durham Doorstep Clubs Sports Festival at Spennymoor Leisure Centre. It follows the success of the inaugural festival last year where 60 invited youngsters got the chance to take part in a range of sports that otherwise may have not been available to them.

A second goal arrived with a blistering finish after some neat work from Davey “Peter Beardsley” Harrison. The deadly “keeper” went on to complete his hattrick and kept the match ball with the best goal of the game when he jinked, turned and bamboozled four Washington defenders before slotting the ball past the keeper after dropping his shoulder to send him the wrong way. Not content with just the hattrick, Wilkinson, who may have left his manager with a selection headache, also assisted two goals and

The activities range from volleyball and dodgeball to street soccer and dance. It has been organised by Durham County Council’s culture and sport team in partnership with the One Point Youth Service. John Walker, sports de-velopment project officer, Durham County Council, said: “Festivals like the Doorstep Club Festival give young people from disad-vantaged communities the chance to take part in a variety of physical activities and help with motivation and confidence to continue being active.“We are also delighted to encourage other young people to be active during the half-term holidays with the other events we have arranged.”

was awarded man of the match for an outstanding display that Alan Shearer would have been proud of.Chilton’s rout of Washing-ton was complete with two goals from Vinny “Ian Dowie” Gash and one a piece from Davey Harrison and Leam Dent. The final score was Chilton 7 Wash-ington Cross Keys 0.After the game a tearful Wilkinson dedicated his match-winning perfor-mance to his girlfriend, Laura and scored his final goal of the day with a successful proposal of marriage!

The events are:Monday 16 February: Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre - Durham Wildcats Junior Training Camps (10am-4pm).Tuesday 17th February: Spennymoor Leisure Centre - Doorstep Clubs Sports Festival (11am -5pm).Wednesday 18th: Spenny-moor Leisure Centre - Open Indoor Under-16 Football Tournament (2pm -5pm).Thursday 19th: Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre - Open Under- 16 Indoor Cricket Competition (10am-5pm).Friday 20th: Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre - Girls Open Indoor Netball Tournament (10am-4.30pm).Places are available by calling John Walker on 03000 266 751.

Ferryhill Celtic romp into cup finalFerryhill Celtic played in the semi-final of the Durham President’s Trophy against Waldridge at the weekend and turned in one of their best performances of the season.Celtic were in search of their first final of the season and started the game on the front foot.It only took five minutes for them to take the lead when a Liam Taylor corner found the head of Ben Clary at the far post and he made no mistake. Fifteen minutes later the side doubled their lead when the Waldridge defence failed to deal with another set piece and were punished by Liam Pearson.Celtic kept the pace and pressure up for the rest of the half but were unable to add to their tally before the break. The second half was a carbon copy of the first in terms of possession and the inevitable third goal arrived in the 55th minute when Luke Thompson finished inside the box from a tight angle.Moments later it was four when man-of-the-match

Jay White produced a smart finish from just inside the Waldridge box.To Waldridge’s credit they never let their heads go down and got a deserved consolation goal. But straight from the kick off Luke Thompson notched his second and the Celtic’s 5th when he directed a Jay White cross into the bottom corner of the net.Celtic were now rampant and Luke Thompson rounded off a great perfor-mance with another cool finish from close range for his hattrick. With ten minutes re-maining the outstanding Marco Linhart got Celtic’s seventh, finishing coolly when one on one with the Waldridge keeper and the same player rounded off a wonderful Celtic display when Jay White unself-ishly squared the ball to him when clean through on goal. Final score: Celtic 8 Waldridge 1.Celtic will play in their second semi-final of the season next Sunday with a mouth-watering local derby at home to Aycliffe Club. Kick off is at 10.30am.
