Studies show that early and ongoing treatment with an FDA-approved therapy can reduce future disease activity and improve quality of life for many people with multiple sclerosis. Talk to your health care professional and contact the National MS Society’s Ohio Buckeye Chapter at MSohiobuckeye.org or 1-800-344-4867 to learn about ways to help manage MS and about current research that may one day reveal a cure.

About the NAtioNAl Multiple ScleroSiS Society

MS stops people from moving. The National MS Society exists to make sure it doesn’t. We address the challenges of each person affected by MS by funding cutting-edge research, driving change through advocacy, facilitating professional education, collaborating with MS organizations around the world, and providing programs and services designed to help people with MS and their families move their lives forward. We are people who want to do something about MS now.

About Multiple ScleroSiS

Multiple sclerosis, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system, interrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and the body. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with two to three more women than men being diagnosed with the disease. MS affects more than 2.3 million people worldwide.

Dear Friends and Supporters,

During 2013 we stayed true to our mission to mobilize people and resources to drive research for a cure and to address the challenges of everyone affected by multiple sclerosis. We provided care and support to more than 11,100 people living with MS through a variety of programs and services that promoted health, knowledge and independence. We were able to enhance our connections and communications

with those who want to create a world free of MS. With the help of our donors, fundraisers, sponsors and volunteers, we were able to host Walk MS at 12 sites and to host two Bike MS events, including the inaugural Bike MS Central Ohio Challenge. Those efforts helped to support the investment of $6.3 million for 17 local research projects. We move into 2014 with great anticipation. The Northwestern Ohio and Ohio Buckeye Chapters

of the National MS Society joined together in October 2013. The new Ohio Buckeye Chapter will now serve more than 14,000 individuals with MS and their families living in 64 Ohio counties. By consolidating the administrative functions and combining the talents of board members, staff

and volunteers, we will streamline operations and increase fundraising effectiveness while expanding programs, services and advocacy for those affected by MS. We will have offices in three locations across Ohio: Cleveland, Columbus and Toledo. We look forward to working together to network and reenergize ourselves as we try to increase

our individual and collective impact on MS. The changes are bound to bring new possibilities and opportunities for growth. Our goal is to connect people and resources to raise awareness about MS and to raise funds to help

find the cause and a cure for the disease. Help us make every connection count in 2014 by becoming a donor, event participant, sponsor or volunteer. We value your contribution and support.

Sincerely,

Janet L. Kramer Chapter President

research cycleStaff Neurologist Robert Fox, MD, from the

Mellen Center at the Cleveland Clinic, was chosen in 2013 to lead an $11.3 million study funded by the national institutes of Health to conduct a clinical trial of the oral drug ibudilast for progressive MS. The National MS Society granted an additional $592,150 to test whether

ibudilast can protect the nervous system and slow or stop progressive MS.During the course of a previous study, Dr. Fox met

Teresa Smith who was diagnosed with MS in 1999. Their connection became stronger after Teresa decided to ride in the Bike MS Pedal to the Point Ride. She joined Dr. Fox, captain of the Team Mellen Bike MS team, and other riders in the two-day fundraising event.Dr. Fox has been a Bike MS participant for 14 years and

Teresa has been riding with Team Mellen for seven years. Together, they are part of one of the largest teams for the number of riders and the amount of funds raised to support programs, services and MS research.

Bike ms Pedal to the Point Twenty-Nine Bike Rides and CountingWhat started out with one Bike MS ride in Alaska turned into

an obsession for Koreen Burrow and David Fox. The couple rode in the bike MS pedal to the point ride for the first time and they finished 12 bike MS events in 2013. They have completed a total of 29 Bike MS rides since they set a personal goal of riding in Bike MS in every state.Koreen was diagnosed with MS in 1991 and their cycling

adventure began in 2007 after she felt a need to connect to other people living with MS. Koreen wanted to challenge herself while raising awareness about MS and raising funds for MS research. riding as a team, David & koreen bike the uS 4 MS, they

have raised more than $120,000 for the National MS Society. David has also made his commitment permanent by getting a tattoo for every ride. He put the bike MS logo on his calf and after every event, he adds a small tattoo representative of each state where they ride. David planned to add brutus from The ohio State university to commemorate the Pedal to the Point Ride.
