“In that day, saith the LORD of hosts, will I take thee, O Ze-rub’-ba-bel, my servant, the son of She-al’-ti-el, saith the LORD, and will make thee as a signet: for I have chosen thee, saith the LORD of hosts:” Haggai-2:23

God can use one person to motivate many people to accomplish His will.

The Prophet Haggai encouraged the leaders in Jerusalem to complete a building project. Why did they need encouragement? Their venture

had been put on hold for sixteen years! God used Haggai to motivate the leaders and people to take up their tools, roll up their sleeves and get back to work. Sixteen long years had passed and it was time to build.

Put on Hold for Sixteen yearsAfter the Babylonian captivity, Zerubbabel led many Jews back to Judah. Within a year they had laid the foundation of the temple. At first the people were excited about rebuilding the temple, but then they faced opposition from their neighbors. Soon the Persians got involved in the dispute and pressured the Jews to abandon their project.

Over the next sixteen years, the people of Judah built their own homes while the temple remained in ruins. The people capitulated to the sins of indifference and apathy, Hence they had not made any real attempt to reactivate the building project.

A Great Motivator for GoodThen God brought Haggai onto the scene. Haggai probably lived in Babylon when news reached him that the rebuilding project languished. God burdened Haggai to travel to Judah to motivate the leaders and people to finish rebuilding the temple. Although he was an older man by that time, Haggai followed the Lord’s prompting and moved to Jerusalem, where he preached four motivational messages within half a year.

Together with the Prophet Zechariah, Haggai inspired the Jews to finish what they had begun. Haggai’s ministry demonstrates that God can use one person to motivate many people to accomplish His will. Ezra recorded Haggai’s impact in Ezra 6:14.

A God-Given MessageHaggai preached his first message on the first day of the Jewish month of Elu. Since it was the first day of the month, the people were celebrating the feast of the new moon. Jerusalem would have been crowded with people celebrating the feast. God had already prepared Haggai’s way. He had not only given a message for Haggai to preach, but He had also gathered an audience to listen.

Consequently, Haggai challenged the people to go into the mountains and bring down timber for the rebuilding project (Haggai 1:8). God promised that He would take pleasure in the project’s completion—not so much because of the building itself, but because of the people’s obedience. (v. 8).

Reflect and Respond! No doubt the promise of the Lord’s presence encouraged the people and strengthened their resolve to finish the task (v.14). Within twentythree days, they were working on the temple. (v.15)

We pray every believer should take the advantage of key opportunities to minister Each one Teach one and Reach Ten to building bridges through act of service and kindness to establish relationships of trust and credibility with the mission work. They are then more ready to open their heart to the one who empowers loving service.

May the Lord’s richest blessings be upon you as you feel the responsibility of build the bridges to motivate others to accomplish His will for their lives.

It is time to Build

And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall

be able to teach others also. (2 Timothy 2:2)In these words Paul presses home the responsibility of the spiritual leader to reproduce and multiply himself. If he is to discharge its fully, he will have to devote time to training men to succeed and perhaps even supersede him. The spiritual stature of Barnabas is seen in his entire freedom from Jealousy when his brilliant protégé, Paul, out stripped him and became the dominant member of the team. It follows that the leader must give his subordinates adequate scope for the exercise and development of their powers. At a recent conference of missionaries, a national leader who was invited to express frankly, from an Indian stand point, what he considered to be the role of the missionary in the world of today in the orient he said, one should cease to be so much a performer and become more a trainer; while this is, of course, not true in every missionary situation, it does highlight one of the great needs in current missionary strategy. The pattern of training in Christian leadership must still be that given by our Lord in His training of the twelve. Perhaps the most strategic and fruitful work of the missionary in the contemporary world is to aid the leaders of tomorrow in developing their spiritual potential. It is a task which requires careful thought, wise planning endless patience and genuine Christian love. It should not be left haphazard. Our Lord devoted the greater part of His three years of missionary work was devoted to molding the character and disciplining the spirits of His disciples. On the mission fields no work is more important and rewarding than this for the spiritual caliber and training of the national Christians are basis for the development of the Church. Once the initial pioneer stage in any field has been passed, this phase of the work should have high priority. The multiplying of himself in the lives of the promising young people among whom he works should rank as one of the main goals of the servant leader. It remains to be said that the training of servant leaders cannot be done by employing the techniques of mass production. It will require patient and careful instruction and prayerful and personal guidance of the individual over a considerable period. “The disciples are not manufactured whole sale. They are produced one by one, Each one, Reach one, and Teach ten, because someone has taken the pains to discipline to instruct and enlighten to nurture and train servant leaders” when a man is really marked out by God for church leadership. He will see to it that he receives the necessary disciplines to make him effective in mission field to reach others.

WISDOM FOR THE HEART 21April 2017

Continued...

When you read Exodus and Numbers, this is pretty much how Israel usually responds

to things. It seems like they respond to every situation with doubt and complaining. In verse 5, Israel complains that there is no food or water, and they loath the wilderness food. By their own admission, there really is food. They just don’t like what’s being offered. I have two sons living in my house. We try to keep a supply of food so that the family can eat. One time my son walked into the kitchen and said “Why isn’t there ever anything to eat in this house?” The truth was that there was plenty of food. But real the issue at that moment what that he didn’t approve of the way he was being provided for. There was food to eat, But he didn’t like the selection of food available to him, So he complained about it. The food he wanted wasn’t there, so he despises the food that is there.

This is one of the tendencies of the human heart. Even when our needs are met, and the things we have are still functional and useful, we look at what other might have, and we we look in store windows, and we long to have those things. We long to have things that are better than what we currently have. Our heart grows dissatisfied with the way God is caring for us. The heart behind this sin is the attitude that “God isn’t being good enough to me.”

This is close to the very first sin ever committed by a human - when Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden. Eve gave in to the temptation to doubt God’s truthfulness. She doubted that the Lord had her best interests in mind. Satan convinced her that God was holding back. There was something desirable to be had, and God wouldn’t let her have it.

Here in our account from Numbers, we see Israel putting themselves in the same position. Their impatience revealed a lack of trust in God’s goodness. This food that God is providing - we loath it. What God provides is not good enough for us. Give us something better or take us back to Egypt.

God’s response to this rebellion was swift. In verse 6, we learn that God sent fiery serpents among the people of Israel. This was not some sort of mythical flaming serpent. The term “fiery serpent” is a reference to burning pain of the serpent’s bite, not a description of the snake’s appearance. To be in a camp with a snake infestation where they are aggressively attacking humans is a serious thing.

Many people find the idea that God would punish sin to be distasteful. The Bible is clear: because God is committed to redeeming and restoring all things, sin must be punished and wiped out. Events like this remind us of the costly nature of sin. The

And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived. Numbers 21:9

“THE BRONZE SERPENT”

Israelites had to relearn that sin leads to death. This is always the case with sin. Sin NEVER leads to life and NEVER brings life. Sin ALWAYS leads to death and is ALWAYs punished. No sin ever committed will go unpunished before God. Israel is in serious trouble.

The Israelites cried to Moses for help. Moses patiently prays to God for the deliverance of the people. God responded by making a way of escape for the punishment over sin. He gave Moses these seemingly strange instructions. The people looked upon the bronze serpent, and if they did, they survived.

The word for “would look” in Hebrew does not mean a quick glance. The word refers to fixing your gaze upon something or to look intently. But faith, in a situation like this, would be very difficult. If there are aggressive, venomous snakes all over the desert ground, where do you want to be looking intently? You would want to look on the ground to avoid the snakes. But the solution was to take their eye off the snakes, and off the redness that is spreading from the site of the bite mark. Stop looking at those things, and concentrate your mind on God’s solution to their problem.

Those who had the faith to do that, recovered. This kind of salvation is a mystery to us. Our instinct would be to run from the snakes, try to kill the snakes, and seek medical help for the bites from the snakes. Our tendency would be to focus our attention on the snakes. We would try to save ourselves! God says: Look to my solution and Live. It goes against all of man’s natural instincts. It likely made no sense to them, just like the concept makes no sense to people today.

THEN BRONZE SERPENT REMINDS US OF CHRIST’S RESCUE FROM SIM

The second principle is that the bronze serpent reminds us of Christ’s rescue from sin. (John 3:14-15) In John 3, we have one of the most famous sections in the Bible. There was a Pharisee, a religions leader of the Jews, named Nicodemus. One night, Nicodemus came to Jesus. He wanted to understand the things Jesus was teaching about sin and salvation.

Jesus explained to Nicodemus what it means to be right with God. Jesus used a phrase - Born Again - but that’s a concept that needs explaining. Nicodemus thought Jesus was talking about physical birth and couldn’t quite understand how he could be born again. Jesus explained to him that he was talking about spiritual birth. Each person is born spiritually dead and separate from God. Salvation is a new birth - it’s God taking a person whose heart and soul is dead, and bringing it to spiritual life. As Jesus is explaining new life to Nicodemus, he refers back to this story from Numbers.

“And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:14-16 ESV)

These things might be obvious but I want to make some observations:

First, the bronze serpent in the desert and the cross of Jesus Christ both involve a very pressing danger. The problem in the desert was the snakes that were bringing death to the people. The bite of these snakes was painful and fatal. Many people died. This wasn’t a passing inconvenience that wore away with time. The people who were bit, died.

WISDOM FOR THE HEART 23April 2017

There is much discussion – and much confusion – abroad today with regard to the

ministry of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament. I would not attempt a facile resolution to the many difficult aspects of that issue. But I would suggest that there is one element of the question which is much overlooked, and without which the broader issues cannot be helpfully pursued. That element is the very distinctive ministry of the Spirit vouchsafed those assigned positions of leadership in the Theocratic rule of Yahweh over the covenant nation, Israel. The following is a redacted excerpt from my doctoral dissertation. It is a brief survey of the appearances of that phenomenon in the narrative of the Old Testament. A slightly more complete version (with footnotes) can be found on this page.

It is significant that Joshua is identified as “a man in whom is the Spirit” (Num 27:18). The reference is to a very important Old Testament ministry of the Holy Spirit, identified as a “special enduement” which “had to do primarily with the regal functions of those who stood as mediators of the divine government of Israel” (McClain). Bright acknowledges this Holy Spirit enablement as appropriate to the theocratic arrangement, which he defines as “the direct rule of God over his people through his designated representative.”

This distinctive ministry, which might be termed a “theocratic anointing,” was a special intervention by the Holy Spirit by which an individual was equipped to fulfill some responsibility pertaining to the theocratic kingdom. At the inception of the theocratic arrangement between Israel and Yahweh, God’s Spirit enabled craftsmen to manufacture all the accouterments of the nascent levitical system – the tabernacle which would serve as the throne room of King Yahweh, the vestments of the high priest, the implements and utensils to be employed in the sacrificial services. Those men had lived their entire lives as slaves; they evidently possessed no skill other than making mud bricks. But the Lord filled them with “the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship, to design artistic works, to work in gold, in silver, in bronze, in cutting jewels for setting, in carving wood” (Exod 31:3-5; cf. 28:3; 31:6-11; 35:31-35; Neh 9:20; Isa 63:11).

The theocratic anointing is most often referenced in connection with the individual (or individuals) given the responsibility of ruling over the covenant people in the name of Yahweh. Although there is no record of the Spirit coming thus upon Moses, implicit evidence of such a ministry can be found.

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that

When the lawgiver grew weary and asked Yahweh for help in judging the people, God told him to select seventy elders, and then promised, “I will take of the Spirit who is upon you, and will put Him upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with you, so that you shall not bear it all alone” (Num 11:17, 25, NASB). Later, Moses momentarily forgot his place and suggested that he was in some sense responsible for bringing water from the rock (Num 20:1-13); in the Psalter it is recorded that he “rebelled against His Spirit, so that he spoke rashly with his lips” (Ps 106:33). Moses had been vouchsafed the enabling Spirit to equip him to function as the representative of Yahweh; when he spoke words suggesting that he deserved some of the honor for what was being done, it was interpreted as rebelling “against the Spirit.”

Not only is Joshua identified here as “a man in whom the Spirit is” (Num 27:18), but later as well (“full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him,” Deut 34:9). Of four of the judges, the book of Judges is explicit that they were capable of great works only because “the Spirit of God came upon them” (Othniel, 3:10; Gideon, 6:34; Jephthah, 11:29; Samson, 13:25; 14:6,19; 15:14).

It is in the days of the united monarchy that the record of the theocratic anointing is most apparent. That ministry descended upon Saul (1 Sam 10:6, 10; 11:6) and transformed a cowardly young man unable to keep track of his father’s donkeys (1 Sam 9:3; 10:21,22) into an able leader and courageous warrior (1 Sam 14:47,

48; 11:1-15). When that ministry departed Saul (1 Sam 16:14), he was rendered unfit for all of the duties of the throne. On the other hand, that anointing came upon young David (1 Sam 16:13) and equipped him as warrior (1 Sam 17:1-58), enabled him as “the sweet psalmist of Israel” (2 Sam 23:1-2), and directed him as he drew up the intricate plans for the temple which God had not allowed him to actually construct (1 Chr 28:11-12). Furthermore, David had experienced the sorry results of sinning away this enabling of the Spirit; after the Spirit had departed from Saul, that melancholy monarch had spent years pursuing David, hoping to eliminate the divinely appointed pretender to the throne of Israel. Thus, in confessing his own horrible sin, David begs God not to punish him as he had Saul by depriving him of the enabling Spirit (Ps 51:11, 12; cf. Ps 139:7; 143:10).

There is no explicit record of such an enabling on any of the kings after David, but it is possible to find a reference to the concept in Solomon’s request for “an understanding heart to judge Your people” (1 Kgs 3:9; cf. 2 Chr 1:10). God answered that request by promising Solomon, “I have given you a wise and understanding heart, so that there has not been anyone like you before you, nor shall any like you arise after you” (1 Kgs 3:12 NKJ); those qualities could certainly be interpreted as an extra measure of the theocratic anointing. But after David, explicit mention of the ministry of the Spirit is reserved for prophets (2 Chr 15:1; Dan 4:8, 9, 18; 5:11, 14; Neh 9:30; Zech 7:12) and for priests and Levites (2 Chr 20:14; 24:20).

Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but what-soever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. John 16:13

THE STARTING PLACE – CREATION Continued...Considering First Timothy 2:11-15

I Tim. 2:11-15 “Let a woman learn in silence with all submission. 12 But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet. For it was Adam who was first created, and then Eve. And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression. Nevertheless she will be saved in childbearing if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, with self–control.” NKJV

In this section of Scripture that addresses the role of the sisters in the Church, Paul is giving instructions to Timothy about how one is to behave in the assembly of God (I Tim. 3:15).

The Holy Spirit makes a clear and concise statement in this verse. The women are to learn in silence or with tranquility and are not allowed to teach, or

concerning the role of men and women in the Church, is contrary to that old man, that human nature that we inherited from our first parents.

But that is not all. We must remember that Paul did not only write according to his own discernment and understanding, he also wrote under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Paul could only write in light of his own day; the Holy Spirit wrote in the light of that day and also in light of all future days, in light of all future generations. The Holy Spirit knew that men and women would ignore many of the injunctions contained in the New Testament in the last days, and so had Paul record as Scripture many admonitions and injunctions regarding a proper walk of the Spirit. And, of course, since the Holy Spirit perfectly knew the end from the beginning, that exact thing has happened. As in the days of our Lord when many men and women in Israel ignored the injunctions contained in the Old Testament by

to exercise the authority over a man, which includes exercising the authority of a man. This is as clear a commandment as the commandment given to Adam and Eve in the beginning of human history. Yet as before, I’m afraid men and women today do not trust in the goodness of God and so try to ignore or alter this injunction.

However, before we look closely at this verse we need to be reminded of a verse Paul wrote regarding the instructions that are given to Paul as an apostle.

I Corinthians 14:37 If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord. KJV

Why did Paul feel the need to include this admonition in his epistle (despite it being inspired by the Holy Spirit)? I think the reason for it is because Paul understood fallen human nature, and many of the things he writes, especially

But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.1 Corinthians 11:3

explaining away their true intent or by the addition of human traditions, so too today, men and women in the Church have ignored many injunctions of the New Testament by explaining away their true intent or by the adoption of human tradition. Today, it has become common, at least here in America, for women to teach women doctrine, and in some cases, for women to teach both men and women in clear contradiction to this verse in Timothy.

Nevertheless, perhaps it should be mentioned (since many judge truth by “success”) that the disobeying of this and other related injunctions does not, necessarily, preclude someone being successful (so-called). Success should never be the barometer of our actions. Fidelity to God’s Word should be our barometer. There is no doubt that much so-called “success,” may still be obtained by those who ignore this injunction and the injunctions of I Corinthians 11-14. In other words, some Churches, who ignore this injunction and other related injunctions, might still find many people saved through their ministry, or they might

that we must be careful how we build on the one foundation. A great edifice can be built with wood. It can be perceived as most successful. Structures built of wood carved intricately can be some of the most beautiful buildings in the world, but wood burns. Paul warns believers that success doesn’t guarantee freedom from the Lord’s judgment. Only things done with gold, silver, precious stones survive judgment. And those are the things done by the power of the Holy Spirit, in agreement with the Scriptures.

But I have heard some Christians say, “But I’ve been helped by such Churches and/or ministries,” “My life has turned around!” “It has made me closer to the Lord!” That is good! But do not be deceived. It was not the Churches and/or ministries that helped you; it was the Lord that helped you! The Lord will help any child of His, in any circumstance. He is ever looking out for us, but that does not justify our non-biblical practices.

For example, it is not uncommon to see, on television programs, testimonies from Christians whose lives have been helped by “woman teachers”

find large numbers of saints attending their Church.

Today, in America, many Churches have ignored such injunctions and, yet, consider themselves very successful. But the question that must be asked in their successes is, “Are they spiritual?” Success does not guarantee spirituality. The worldly concept of “entrepreneurism” has so compromised the thinking of many Churches in America that biblical Christianity is slowing disappearing and being replaced with a mindset that only accepts “success” as the barometer of God‘s blessing.

Women believers in many Churches in America routinely ignore such injunctions, and, in contradiction to those injunctions, set up ministries and/or classes so that they may teach. Now, no doubt, such ministries or classes may be helpful to some Christians, but, we must ask whether they are spiritual, for Paul says that the one who is truly spiritual will recognize his commandments as being commandments of the Lord!

In light of that, we must ever remember the warning of Paul in I Cor. 3:10-15

Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands. Proverbs 14:1

WISDOM FOR THE HEART 27April 2017

and, in some cases, even by so-called “women pastors,” and so, (because of their own personal experience), they see nothing wrong with a woman being such. In their mind, they see nothing wrong with a woman teaching or being a pastor because they base their opinion, not on the Word, but on their own personal experience. But, again, where does Scripture indicate that personal experience should dictate what is right or wrong? The Christian is to conform their lives to Scripture, not to experience, and Scripture clearly prohibits a woman from being a teacher and/or pastor. But I have been helped by them! Good, we should be glad someone has been helped, but that does not make a women pastor or teacher any more acceptable in the light of Scripture. God helped you in spite of the misunderstanding of one of his children. How merciful is our God.

The same can be said of the many television evangelists in America. Christians all over the world claim to be helped by the ministry of such men, yet does that make those ministries spiritual? They are very successful,

Our goal in life should not be to be successful, but to be obedient. It is true a structure can be built quicker with wood, than with gold, silver, or precious stones. There are worldly means and methods available that will allow one to build a Church quicker, but should that be our goal? Does not such a mindset demonstrate a lack of faith? Does it not betray a non-spiritual mind that needs the reassurances of success to keep it faithful?

Not many Christians are satisfied with labour that does not produce immediate results. It takes the working of the cross, to remain faithful to the principles of God’s Word in the face of supposed failure. . History is replete with examples of servants who were faithful to God’s Word and yet were not successful during their lifetimes, but after their departure their long toilsome work became most fruitful. Most saints, however, are not satisfied with sowing seeds that will be reaped by others. It wounds their ambition and need for accolades. But, let us remember, it is those who are willing to bear such a cross that will be the ones greatly rewarded by the Lord.

and have many followers, but does that make them right? They have grown into great edifices, but will they survive the testing fires of the Lord (I Cor. 3:13)? (Many Christians still think otherwise, because they were helped by them. It is good to show love and respect to fellow Christians, because you have been helped by them, but a Christian needs to remember that our ultimate allegiance is to the Lord and His Word).

No doubt many of the aforementioned men and women love the Lord sincerely, and sincerely seek to do His will. They are sincerely seeking to build up the body of Christ. They sincerely seek to help the ones who respond to their ministry. The sincerity of these believers need not be questioned, but it is always necessary to make sure that our sincerity is not a variance with the Word of God.

The Lord has given to us many examples of sincere servants who sincerely sought to serve God and do His will. They were good people who only wanted to please God, and yet Scripture still tells us they were wrong (e.g. Uzzah, David, Asa. etc.).

She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. Proverbs 31:26

WISDOM FOR THE HEART

Indeed, Gods New Years resolution for me and also the readers of wisdom for the Heart magazine. How blessed we are that we already know His resolution for us

28 April 2017

And so, as we come to this injunction of the Lord, and His other injunctions in I Corinthians and I Timothy, let us remember that they were given to us by the Lord for our well-being. Perhaps, in today’s fast moving society, such adherence may impede success, but let us remain faithful. The Lord gave us these injunctions for our benefit. He is all wise. He knows what is best for His bride. May we be a holy bride, willing to submit ourselves to our blessed Saviour and Lord, and not be like our mother Eve, who did not trust in the goodness of God and His revelation, but wrongly believed there was a quicker and better way to be like God.

Now, let me include, once more, the verse we are considering.

Nevertheless she will be saved in childbearing if they continue in faith, love, and

holiness, with self–control.” NKJV

In these instructions, Paul states that women are to learn in silence and that he does not allow a woman to teach. Let us first look at the latter statement regarding teaching. What does this mean that Paul does not “allow?” Where does he get such authority to make such a prohibition? To understand, what Paul is doing, we first have to understand a verse from the Gospels—Matt. 16:19.

Matt. 16:19 “And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” KJV

The Lord at this time gave to Peter, then later to all His apostles the power of binding and loosing. Much confusion has resulted from a misunderstanding of this verse. This verse has nothing to do with spiritual warfare. So much misunderstanding of Scripture occurs so often because, as Gentile believers, we do not take the time to understand the Jewish milieu in which Jesus spoke. The Lord was Jewish. Peter was Jewish, and the apostles were

Jewish. We must understand the historical background to understand what our Lord is saying.

Alfred Edersheim states the following concerning this verse and its historical background:

“For, assuredly, in interpreting such a saying of Christ to Peter, our first inquiry must be, what it would convey to the person to whom the promise was addressed. And here we recall, that no other terms were in more constant use in Rabbinic Canon-Law than those of ‘binding’ and ‘loosing.’ John Lightfoot gives many examples of such binding and loosing: “R[abbi] Jochanan said…, ‘Why have ye brought this elder to me? Whatsoever I loose, he binds; whatsoever I bind, he looseth.’” “R. Chaija said, ‘Whatsoever I have bound to you elsewhere, I will loose to you here.’” “Concerning gathering wood on a feast-day scattered about a field, the school of Shammai binds it, the school of Hillel looseth it.” “R. Meir loosed the mixing of wine and oil, to anoint a sick man on the Sabbath.”

III, 24).Another interpretation of RENEW OUR DAYS AS OF OLD: as it is stated, Then shall the offering of Judan and Jerusalem be pleasant unto the Lord as in the days of old, and as in ancient years (Mal. III, 4)--as in the days of old refers to Moses, for it is written, Then His people remembered the days of old, the days of Moses (Isa. LXIII, 11), and as in ancient years refers to the years of Solomon.1 Rabbi [Judah ha-Nasi] said: As in the days of old refers to the days of Noah,2 as it is said, For this is as the waters3 of Noah unto Me (ib. • Big textual problem here• Many possible translations of (ki im)

o “unless” Can be read as either doubtful or has

hopeful Restore us unless you have rejected us

(and we know that you have) Restore us unless you have rejected us

(and we know that you would never)o “but if/ for if ”

Very wooden and actually unlikely It would mean that the line would have a

protasis without an apodosiso “instead/ except”

Possible translation of ki im but unlikely do to the context. It would mean that the last line would be a protest, “We have asked you to restore us, but instead you have rejected us. This does

o “even though”o “for…”

This approach drops the as in the Septuagint

LXX: “For thou has utterly rejected us, And were exceedingly angry with us.”

• Does any of this matter? And why?/ why not?o The precise meaning may not really matter. o The Point: Israel felt utterly rejected by Godo Lamentations is their emotional cry to God b/c of

that rejectiono There is a huge contrast between their experience

of this world and their hope in the promises of the coming kingdom

Therefore, this tension at the end of the book seems fitting

There is no simple answer for these people

• Life is unbearable now• God is loving and merciful

o How do you reconcile those two truths?

o It is dishonest to ignore the pain

o It is unimaginable to turn your back on God

o All you can do is be patient and steadfast.

• But does an unhappy ending mean that God has rejected Israel?

o No. o The disciples didn’t think so.

Acts 1:6So when they had come together, they were asking Him, saying, “Lord, is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?”

o Paul didn’t think so, Rom 11:1–2b

I say then, God has not rejected His people, has He? May it never be! For I too am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. God has not rejected His people whom He foreknew.

Rom. 11:11I say then, they did not stumble so as to fall, did they? May it never be! But by their transgression salvation has come to the Gentiles, to make them jealous.

o Also, even after 70 AD the Jewish rabbis were not understanding Lamentations 5:22 as an utter rejection.

THOU CANST NOT HAVE UTTERLY REJECTED US, AND BE EXCEEDING WROTH AGAINST US (V, 22). R. Simeon b. Lakish said: If there is rejection there is no hope; but if there is anger there is hope, because whoever is angry may in the end be appeased.

POINT: Lamentations is primarily about the emotional response of Israel in response to the exile. It is not primarily about the restoration. Israel is suffering to understand this time in her life. How can God reject her? This book is about that journey toward understanding. There is no happy ending, because there is no happy ending for them right now. Even those living in homes in Babylon are not doing very well. They are separated from God.NOTE: God has not spoken in this book. Is that important? Maybe not important. But it is interesting. This book is about crying out to God in a time of great suffering. Because of their sin and separation from God, they feel a palpable division. A silence. God is there, and He is good, but the relationship is severed. They are waiting for that to be redone.IV. EXILE AND RESTORATION THEOLGOY

• We cannot forget the context of Lamentations within the scope of God’s revealed plans for Israel

V. CONCLUSION AND APPLICATION• Lamentations helps us understand that there is sometimes

a tension between what we are experiencing now and what we are hoping for the future. The tension between the “now” and the “not yet” is often quite acute and causes us to mourn.

• Israel knew about the covenants and were expecting an eternal possession in the land with a king that would rule forever.

The Lord hath swallowed up all the habitations of Jacob, and hath not pitied: he hath thrown down in his wraththe strong holds of the daughter of Judah; he hath brought them down to the ground:

he hath polluted the kingdom and the princes thereof. Lamentations 2:2

o Kings and Jeremiah report different numbers Could be that Kings is using hyperbole Could be that Kings is listing the whole

group while Jeremiah is only listing the males.

There were people who went off to Babylon and were integrated into society

• Some became land owners. Others just got jobs.

Others ran off to neighboring nations Others remained in the land

• Know this from grave sites• People left behind

o “poorest of the land” (2 Kgs.25:12; Jer. 39:10)o Jer. 40–43 tells us a little about the political unrest

that is in the land Jeremiah is given a choice to stay in

Judah or go to Babylon. He decides to stay in Judah

Gadeliah has been appointed over Jerusalem by Babylon

Jeremiah settles in Mizpah where Gadeliah is ruling

• Gadeliah tried to get the Judeans to harvest and work willingly for the Babylonians

Meanwhile Ishmael (a descendant of David) who had fled to Ammon came back to try to kill Gadeliah

He and his men come and kill Gadeliah, apparently hoping to lead a revolt.

They get afraid of the Chaldeans and run off to Egypt.

• People who go off to exile:o Jeremiah said to get comfortable and make life

good in exileo Daniel- Early periodo Ezra/ Nehemiah- those who returno Esther- those who remain

o How can they go off into exile?• This tension is similar to what we see in Jesus’ cry “My God,

my God…)o It is what we see in David’s pleas for God to look and

act. o The justification for lament is the pain of living in a

Genesis 3 world. (Sometimes this pain is particularly acute.)

• David laments often.o Poetry about the oppression coming from his

enemieso His dying son

• Here about the exile• Etc.

THE POINT: Lament can result from the tension that exists between the conditions of “now” and the “not yet.” This tension is a direct result of the fall. When we mourn because of the effects of sin on God and His creation then we are justified, but when we mourn because of selfish reasons then there might be a problem (i.e., Judas mourning or worldly sorrow in 2 Cor. 7).What lamentation boils down to is this: A weeping over the brokenness of this world and the brokenness of our relationship with God.VI. QUESTIONS FOR THE CLASS:

1. How has Lamentations given you a greater understanding of the exile period?

2. Let’s talk about the difference between how God operated with Israel and how He works with believers now?

a. Sin has consequences, but does it have the same consequences?

i. Sometimes true believers just have to live with the consequences of their sin (i.e., Moses not being able to go into the Land).

b. God is faithful, but does He demonstrate his faithfulness to believers the way that we see that play out in Lamentations (i.e., judging sin according to his covenant promises?).

3. Let’s talk about the similarities between how God operated with Israel and how He works with believers now.

a. Sin causes a separation from God.b. God is sovereign in our lives.c. God punishes sin (NT we call that discipline).

4. Where do we see similar agonizing over the separation from God that sin causes?

a. “My God, my God why have you forsaken me?”LIFE IN EXILE:

• Biblical depictions of life in exile:o Lamentationso Jer. 40–44o Danielo Ezekielo Obadiah

• Build upo Nebuchadnezzar had a “Jerusalem problem”

He carted Jehoiachin off to Babylon and replaced him with his uncle Mattaniah, who he renamed Zedekiah

Zedekiah, however, was toying with the idea of a revolt so he was reaching out to other nations.

• Deportations:

All thy lovers have forgotten thee; they seek thee not; for I have wounded thee with the wound of an enemy, with the chastisement of a cruel one, for the multitude of thine iniquity; because thy sins were increased. Jeremiah 30:14

Leadership Lesson #5 – For those who are unsure about their spiritual and eternal destinies, they must come to a point where they call upon the name of the Savior.

“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)

“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:13)

With the turmoil and confusion of his eternal and doctrinal paths now put to rest, he continued to struggle with all of the pride that drove both his ambition and heightened sense of self-worth. The thought that he (not Christ) could impact the world continued to drive him forward. It was also during his time at Andover that Adoniram found the perfect solution that would solve all of his earthly desires. He would enter the mission field as the first missionary from North America and go to the country of Burma where there was a desperate need to translate the Bible into the Burmese language, while solving all of the family obligations of serving the Lord and making a difference! While it would not be the notoriety and fame that his family had in mind for him, it was such a noble and worthy spiritual cause that it would be impossible for them to present any justifiable argument against the heavenly pursuit.

Leadership Lesson #6 – God will put us through various circumstances of life to refine and mold us into His image. There will be a combination of trials, tribulations, sorrows, joys, love, and happiness as we live out our Christian faith in God’s creation. We are to simply trust and obey.

“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6

The rest of Adoniram’s story is filled with inconceivable life events of both joy and heartbreak. The joyous occasions took place when new converts were slowly made, when concentrated periods of Bible translation into the Burmese language occurred, periods of excellent health existed, children were being born, along with being able to experience the joy of ministry with the Godly spouses that

FOLLOWING ADONIRAM LEADERSHIP LESSONS

PART 2

were given him. However, he also suffered much heartache, pain, and suffering while on the mission field in Burma and occasionally in the country of India. He lost two wives and several children to disease and sickness, was thrown into prison and tortured, suffered agonizing periods of poor health and depression, while making very little headway in establishing a missionary beachhead that would be sustainable in the country of Burma in the long-term. The spreading of the gospel message was a slow and arduous process as a result of the government’s unwillingness to let foreign missionaries gain any real inroads.

We can now look back in history and see how God was orchestrating the events in Burma in His timing, while exercising some of the important lessons of life that Adoniram needed for spiritual growth: mainly, his total reliance on the Lord for doing the work of missions and translating the language, while losing all notions of high-minded thinking and overvalued self-worth. Over time, the individual circumstances and life events were teaching him that God’s thoughts and ways were much higher than man’s thoughts and ways. In the end, God used Adoniram in unimaginable ways. He completed both the Burmese Bible translation along with a dictionary for the language. He also saw God make significant inroads in Burma that would have lasting spiritual impact for decades and centuries to come. God accomplished many wonderful and glorious things in Burma, however, it was all done on His timetable.

Leadership Lesson #7 – The God of this universe has our best interests at heart. The way He thinks and the actions that He takes are sometimes beyond human understanding. We must always remember who He is and who we are. He is the Alpha and Omega. We are simply the dust of the earth. We are sinners saved by the grace of God.

“For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:9

Continued from previous edition ...EARTH, HEAVEN & HELL

Bible Reading: Luke 14:16-24 (Earth); 15:7,10 (Heaven); 16:19-31 (Hell).

Aim: To not love this world but to look to heaven and to live for heaven.Introduction: How many believers have wrong views of and priorities of Earth, Heaven and Hell? The average unbeliever lives only for earth, without any thought of heaven or hell.Let us put these in their right perspective:I. Earth and its Madness. (Luke 14:16-24).i) The man who made the great supper is God.ii) The supper represents the marriage supper in heaven. (Revelation 19:7-10).iii) The invitation to mankind is ‘come, for all things are now ready’. (John 7:37-39; Revelation 22:17; Matthew 11:28-30).iv) The excuses represent earth and its madness. (Definition of ‘mad’ = disordered mind, insane, wildly foolish.) Question: What are some mad things in this world?1. Mad contentious man. (Proverbs 26:18-26).2. Laughter and mirth = entertainment, movies, etc. (Ecclesiastes 2:2).3. Oppression makes a wise man mad (Ecclesiastes 7:7).4. Every man that maketh himself a prophet. (Jeremiah 29:26) eg: charismatic false prophecies.5. Idol worshippers (Jeremiah 50:38) eg: lucky charms, Roman Catholic statues.6. Babylon false religion making the world mad (Jeremiah 51:7; Revelation 17:4).7. Those who persecute Christians eg: Saul in Acts 26:11, wolves in churches (Acts 20:29,30).8. Gibberish speakers in charismatic churches (I Corinthians 14:23).

II. Heaven and its Gladness. (Luke 15:7,10).Jesus describes the joy in heaven over one sinner repenting. The lost sheep after being found caused gladness in heaven. God, angels and departed believers in heaven have agreat interest in people on earth getting saved. (Hebrews 12:1). Let us work with them towin souls to Christ and disciple them.III. Hell and its Sadness. (Luke 16:19-31).The sadness in hell consists of:i) Hell’s torments – mentioned 4 times in v.23,24,25,28. These include torments of flame, thirst, smell of sulphur, hearing weeping, wailing, gnashing of teeth, seeing what you missedof God’s best.ii) Hell’s memories. ‘Son remember . . .’ v 25. Memories of earth’s luxuries lost and God’s blessings taken for granted. Memories of rejecting Christ and Gospel preachers.iii) Hell’s hopelessness. ‘A great gulf fixed.’ v 26. No hope of escape ever. No lessening of suffering ever, no escape from selfish, evil people ever.iv) Hell’s dread for others. ‘I have five brethren’ v 28. Those in hell have a greater concern for their living relatives on earth than most believers have to reach them. People in helldesire their relatives to be saved. Conclusion and Challenge:1. Are you concerned to win your lost relatives and friends to Christ?2. Are you learning and studying to be a better soul winner?3. Do you regularly and weekly go soul winning with others in your church?4. Are you training others in soul winning?5. Have you studied Answers Soul-winning chapters 17,18,19,21,22,23?6. Are you praying for God to lead you to someone today?

city square. Paul, Timothy, Luke, and Silas continued to walk to the river for prayer and discipleship with these Jewish women and others. While they went, a young girl noticed them and followed them. She is stated to have had a “spirit of divination” (Acts 16:16). Literally, she had a “spirit of a Python.”

The word “python” originally referred to the name of a large serpent that guarded the divine oracle at the city of Delphi. According to Greek myth, Zeus slew the snake and spoke the oracle himself. He did this through the mouthpiece of people who stayed at this location. From this, the word came to be defined as “ventriloquism.” In essence, the people who spoke out the oracles at Delphi were psychics. They were channels of demonic spirits that spoke through them and made personal

God prepared this woman to receive the truth. He

led Paul to go to Philippi and used Paul’s strategy to explain the gospel to this affluent woman. God then worked on her heart to believe all that Paul declared to her. She then explains all this to those occupying her household. In the end, everyone in her house, children and servants (apparently her husband was deceased or divorced), also affirm the gospel and join with Lydia in being baptized. At the end of Acts 16, Paul returned to Lydia’s house where all the “brothers” were encouraged in the faith (Acts 16:40). Thus, the church continued to meet at her home. There was no church building. There was a river outside the city and a house within.

If we imagined visiting the Philippian church, we would picture ourselves walking into a person’s house and sitting in their living room or possibly in the outdoor courtyard where a garden may be planted. The servants would attend to people and then join the gathering. It was a home group that no doubt included food and drink. God worked in the heart of Lydia first so that the ministry would have a base of operation in her home when Paul would be arrested.Convert 2: Psychic slave girl challenging the authority of ChristThe next convert is a completely different case. had been given or any possible interrogation was undertaken (Acts 16:23).In the end, Paul and Silas were left with a jailer. It may be that Timothy and Luke, being Gentiles or absent when arrested, were left alone. The jailer was given stern commands regarding their incarceration and he took no chances of these prisoners escaping. He placed them in foot stocks and locked them in the lowest dungeon level (Acts 16:24). They could not walk out, and even if they did they would have to pass by most of the security personnel in the compound.Paul did not go looking for the slave girl. God brought her to him. God simply used them in their strategy to introduce a new convert prospect. God was at work. The men did not sit and wait at Lydia’s house. They went out and continued to look for open hearts. God then interrupted their journey to the river and gave them a person He had prepared for conversion.

predictions about people’s lives. The girl that followed Paul was a psychic or a fortune teller. She was filled with a demon that enabled her to have some success in predicting people’s personal futures. The spirit inhabiting her immediately recognized the Holy Spirit indwelling Paul and his companions. The girl called out a true statement in a voice loud enough for all standing by to hear. She identified the strangers and used the common Jewish name of “Most High God” (El Elyon) in referring to their God. She also declared that they brought the gospel message for salvation.

Why is this objectionable? Why did Paul get tired of this free publicity and command the demon to leave her? I believe the reason was that of a challenge. This girl had control over people’s minds in that city. If she could quickly identify and declare the purpose of these people, she would still reveal herself to have superior power. People would listen to her sooner than they would Paul. Paul met the challenge not by attempting to match her prophetic skills, but by silencing her ability altogether. She identified them and he now identified the demon and commanded

it to come out (Acts 16:18).

The spirit left the girl and, as often is the case, manifested its departure physically. The girl probably fell to the ground or gave a great groan. The text does not indicate anything more about the girl except for the fact that she no longer had the ability to give prophecies. Her career as a psychic was over. This leads us to believe that she was converted. The text in Acts does not say this, but her account is placed in between two other conversion stories. It is highly likely that the spirit did not return to her because she received Christ and was filled with the Holy Spirit. As a result, the men who used her to make money were out of business. They must have been influential businessmen because they were able to effectively present their complaints before the public magistrates (Acts16:19-21) and rouse up the emotions of the community (Acts 16:22). This reveals the public sentiment of the town. They were Romans and Paul and Silas were considered to be suspicious foreigners who were attempting to undermine Roman law. The emotions of the crowds were so intense that Paul and Silas were publicly beaten before any real verdict Pastor. Jim Harmeling

“Show me a Christian who is utterly devoted to Christ, whose sole aim in life is loyalty to Him and zeal for Hisservice, whose burning desire is to do the will of God at any price, and I will show you a person who has solved the problem of worldliness. The life lived for what this world offers seems futile and empty, tawdry and trivial compared with the utter satisfaction, the glorious joys and lasting pleasures that a person nds in Christ”.
