Self-rule: a country can rule themselves (make laws and their own decisions) BUT Great Britain would be in charge of Canadian trade and their relationships with other countries.

Why would Great Britain want to do that?

Because they can still use resources from Canada and they got a good deal on resources that they could use for things like Industry!

Timeline Activity

To help you to better understand the most important things from The British Empire, The Unification of Italy and the Unification of Germany we are going to do a timeline activity!

Page 96: Nationalism Social Studies 9 Ms. Rebecca. Do Now: What country are you from? What country do you call “home”? Do you love your country? How do you show

Timeline

In your groups you will be assigned to go through your book and notes to determine the MOST important events that happened for your assigned topic:

Group1: Italian Unification Group 2: German Unification Group 3: Growth of the British Empire

Page 97: Nationalism Social Studies 9 Ms. Rebecca. Do Now: What country are you from? What country do you call “home”? Do you love your country? How do you show

Timeline Requirements

Your group must find 4 big events from your topic. On a piece of A4 paper appoint one person to write neatly a

sentence about one of the events. BE SURE TO WRITE THE YEAR THE EVENT HAPPENED! THEN have an artist in your group draw a picture of the event. Continue to work until you have four different drawings and

summaries on A4 paper! When you are finished you should tape your events to the

board on the spot on the timeline where each event happened.

Nationalism comes to Aging Europe

Today you are going to learn about how nationalism affected other countries in Europe.

Page 103: Nationalism Social Studies 9 Ms. Rebecca. Do Now: What country are you from? What country do you call “home”? Do you love your country? How do you show

Nationalism comes to Aging Europe

Late 1800s: 3 Great Empires in Eastern Europe:

1. Austria-Hungary 2. Ottoman Empire 3. Russia

Page 104: Nationalism Social Studies 9 Ms. Rebecca. Do Now: What country are you from? What country do you call “home”? Do you love your country? How do you show

Nationalism comes to Aging Europe

But by 1900s those 3 empires were losing strength.

Page 105: Nationalism Social Studies 9 Ms. Rebecca. Do Now: What country are you from? What country do you call “home”? Do you love your country? How do you show

Austria-Hungary

Age of nationalism (love for your country) Nationalism made people who were from

certain nationalities (groups of people who spoke the same language, shared a history and culture) not want to be rule by outsiders.

Page 106: Nationalism Social Studies 9 Ms. Rebecca. Do Now: What country are you from? What country do you call “home”? Do you love your country? How do you show

Reminder

In Western Europe (Italy and Germany) nationalism united people and created new countries.

Page 107: Nationalism Social Studies 9 Ms. Rebecca. Do Now: What country are you from? What country do you call “home”? Do you love your country? How do you show

In Austria

Nationalism was a problem because Austria was German speaking but there were people from many different nationalities living there.

Each group felt nationalism and wanted to not be ruled by Austria. They wanted control over their own country!

Page 108: Nationalism Social Studies 9 Ms. Rebecca. Do Now: What country are you from? What country do you call “home”? Do you love your country? How do you show

One Nationality:

Hungarians. There were MANY Hungarians in Austria and they wanted independence from Austria.

So they had a revolution

Hungarian Revolution in 1848

Austria stopped the Hungarians but they didn’t want them to be mad so they made a deal:

Nationalism Play!

Now to help you better understand all of the countries/nationalities that had nationalism in the 1800s, you are going to work in groups to make a play about one example of nationalism.
