renewable resources (corn, sugar beet, sugar cane, cassava, potatoes and many others). Plants’ photosynthesis remove CO2 from the atmosphere to transform it into sugar or starch, which we convert into PLA and then packaging. Thanks to the lower energy required by its production process, PLA delivers a lower carbon footprint compared to most oil-based plastics. PLA offers multiple end of life options, including recycling and composting.

Keynote: There is a debate about bio industries contributing to a crisis in food prices. What about bioplastics? Access to affordable food is a fundamental human right and innovative strategies are needed to help the growing world population sustain itself. But Bioplastics are not the cause: the real reasons are different : • Volatility in energy prices and financial speculation on commodities drive volatility in everything else. • Poor distribution of food resources, due to political reasons• High percentage of food is wasted, either during the distribution phase as well as from the consumers (up to 50% in more advanced societies) • Poor usage of available rainfed arable land (less than 50%)• Most of the starch/sugar is used by the paper and cardboard industry as well as for adhesives and other chemical products. All NATIVIA™ films are certified 4-star OK BIOBASED from Vincotte and approved for composting according to EN 13432.

This logo can be used for final products which are made of this intermediate and certified with a 7P-number as final products at DIN CERTCO

Definition of Carbon Footprint:• CF is the total set of greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions caused by a product • CF expressed in kg CO2 equivalent per kg of product • CF is a relevant measurement to assess impact on global warming caused by GHG and allow direct comparison between alternative products

this is without taking into consideration the “credit” in CO2, coming from the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed by the plant during its growth (3.3 kg of CO2 for each kg of corn produced - Cemcorp, 1992). If we include this, we can assume that PLA is actually reducing the amount

of CO2 in the atmosphere. Furthermore, new technologies are being developed in in PLA production, which will bring a further process optimization and GHG reduction.

NATIVIA™ film rangeNATIVIA™ includes transparent as well as metalised films, in various thicknesses. All films are heat sealable and suitable for printing and lamination and can be used on different packaging machines: hffs, vffs, rollwrap, overwrap, twist wrap. NATIVIA™ is also suitable for manufacturing sleeves and bags in various types and shapes.

The film structure is a coextrusion of 3 layers:

Description

Unlike most traditional films, the transparent version of NATIVIA™ NTSS offers excellent water transmission which makes it the ideal solution for those products which need to release the excess humidity. Both NATIVIA™ NTSS and NZSS offer excellent barrier against oil, fats, alcohol ad aromas, whereas the vacuum metallisation on NATIVIA™ NZSS gives to the film very good moisture and oxygen barrier performance, in line with traditional metallised films.Finally, NATIVIA™ is compatible with most barrier-coating technologies.

NATIVIA™ delivers outstanding sealing properties, both in terms of hot tack and seal strength, at a wide range of temperatures.

PLA offers multiple options in terms of end of life. Besides landfilling, there are other solutions which allow to recover the energy value of PLA and minimize the impact on our environment.Once converted into packaging, NATIVIA™ can take 2 different routes: a long loop, meaning composting or incineration to create biomass and CO2, which are then converted by the plants into new sugar, or a short loop, which allows to recycle PLA packaging to make virgin raw material (lactic acid), that can be reconverted again into packaging.

End-of-life options 2 closed loops possible

Composting:NATIVIA™ is compostable according to DIN EN 13432 standards: under controlled conditions (T>58°C, rh>90%, presence of micro-organism), PLA will fully degrade into CO2, water and biomass,

which can be used as fertilizer in agriculture.

Incineration:NATIVIA™ is 100% combustible and can be transformed into clean energy. In this way, the CO2 previously absorbed by the plants is released back again into the atmosphere, absorbed by plants and converted into sugar and starch

Mechanical Recycling:PLA can be re-used after grinding, re-crystallisation and re-granulation

Landfill: PLA does not degrade in landfill conditions. Although this solution does not allow for any value or energy recovery, it can be considered as a way of sequestering the CO2 previously absorbed by the plants from the atmosphere.

Chemical Recycling:PLA can be converted back into lactic acid, purified and polymerized again into high quality 1st grade
