Money Matters

Would You Like A Pastoral Visit?

REMINDER: If you, a family member or someone you know

is confined or hospitalized and would benefit from a pastoral

visit, please contact your parish office and let them know.

Staff does not always know of hospital admissions for a

variety of reasons and often has no way of knowing of other

situations in which a parish contact would be beneficial.

SCRIP REMINDER

SCRIP puts your regular shopping dollars to work supporting your parish and school with over fifty retailers ….. grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants, department stores, hardware stores, movie theaters, spas and more!

SCRIP cards are available for purchase after Mass twice per month. Next, the weekend of August 19th/20th. You can also purchase SCRIP at the school office for the remainder of the summer and throughout the school year.

Your support is appreciated!

Nativity of Mary’s Religious Education Program

Do you have an hour and 15 minutes of time to donate once a week on Wednesday nights?

Do you like to work with children?

Do you want to share your Catholic faith with our youth?

Do you like to prepare a craft or an age appropriate activity for children?

Do you like working with 9, 10 and 11th graders as they prepare for Confirmation?

Then maybe I have just the thing for you. I have several teaching positions to fill; 3rd grade & 5th grade teachers on Wednesday nights from 5:45 to 7:00 and Confirmation teachers on Wednesdays from 7:15 to 8:30.

The benefits include a smile or hug from a little one, an unexpected insightful answer to a question, the knowledge that you have helped to contribute to their learning their prayers, the commandments, the Catholic faith and the Mass. You would be working with a wonderful group of people and parents who want their children to learn about Christ in the Catholic church.

If interested in volunteering or more details please contact Kathy Hookham at 752-7861 ext. 29.

HAIL, HOLY QUEEN

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we

cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping

in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward

us, and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O

loving, O sweet Virgin Mary! Pray for us, O holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen.

Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

"It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs." She said, "Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters." Then Jesus said to her in reply, "O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish." And the woman's daughter was healed from that hour. - Mt 15:26b-28

************************************************************** "O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish." This woman was an outsider. She was a Canaanite, not an Israelite, and as such she would have been considered ritually unclean. But she approached Jesus nonetheless and asked for his help. And Jesus used this opportunity to teach his disciples an important lesson. In the verses directly before today's passage, Jesus had told Peter that what defiles a person comes from the heart, not from ignoring external purity practices. Then, Jesus traveled with his disciples from Galilee to the region of Tyre and Sidon where they were much more likely to encounter someone considered to be unclean. At first it appeared that Jesus wasn't going to acknowledge the woman who begged for help. His comment, "It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs," was a common comparison between Jews (the children) and Canaanites (the dogs). But, in fact, Jesus said this only to go right ahead and break this social code! He showed by his actions that it did not matter whether someone was Jewish or not, what mattered was the faith in a person's heart. And this woman proved to Jesus and the doubting disciples that she had great faith. How many others would have even ap-proached Jesus to ask for his help? How many others would have persevered when he appeared unresponsive? By pausing in his response, and first mentioning the standard reply, Jesus gave this woman the opportunity to demonstrate her great faith. And then, he answered her request and praised her extraordinary faith. What a lesson for his prejudiced disciples! And what a lesson for us, both to persevere in faith, and never to judge others on mere appearances.

FREE CONCERT August 20th at 7:00 PM

St. William Parish Michael James Mette will visit St. William Parish to offer a free concert "unplugged" in church on Sunday, Aug. 20th at 7 p.m. Michael Mette is a Catholic performing artist and has performed over 300 shows across the country, along with his family. Please mark your calendars for this coming special family event. www.michaeljamesmette.com

Once again, our parish has outdone them-selves in prayers for vocations. We have had a host for our Traveling Chalice each week for two years now, and I can’t thank you enough for all the prayers Heaven is receiving! Those prayers are being heard, our children are learning to discern what God’s vocation is for each of them, and more are considering the religious life and priesthood.

On that note…it’s August and believe it or not, time to think about next year’s hosts to keep our Chalice traveling and prayers for vocations going, going, going! Once again, we will have a sign up opportunity at our parish Farmer’s Market on September 17th. It’s the only booth at the market where you can get FREE food!! So sign up to host and get your freebie!!

Another opportunity to sign up to host our Traveling Chalice will take place in August, after Masses. Look for me after all Masses on August 19 and 20 to get your preferred hosting weeks. Also, as always, you can contact me, Colleen, by phone at 868-6386 or email [email protected]. Let’s make it our parish goal to fill the calendar again this year with Chalice hosts and make vocation prayers a continuous stream Heavenward!!
