Nativity of the Lord: Christmas December 24 & 25

Isaiah 52:7-10; Psalm 98; Hebrews 1:1-6; John 1:1-18 or 1:1-5,9-14

On this Christmas day, our holy scriptures invite us deeper into the mystery of

the Incarnation. No longer need we cry out for comfort. In the first reading Isaiah tells us of the Lord comforting the people. No longer need we listen only to the prophets, says the Letter to the Hebrews: God has spoken to

us through the Son. No longer need we walk in darkness; our Gospel pro-claims the shining light of the Incarnate Word. Let us be attentive now to the

good news of our salvation.

Purpose: In this retreat, middle school participants learn what it is to live in right relationship with God by being true to them-selves and respecting others.

Christ out of Christmas

Ok, I get what people mean when they say “Keep

Christ in Christmas.” I understand the call to not get so caught up with Christmas preparations - the par-

ties, cards, presents, etc….that we forget the of Jesus’ birth. I do understand this. But, in all honesty, I dis-like this saying because it just isn’t true. There is no way Christ can ever be missing from Christmastime.

Our faith teaches us that God broke into our world in the most remarkable of waya. God “stooped down” from being I AM WHO AM to become one of us. Humanity is forever changed with the Incarnation.

Whether we like it or not. Whether we actively think about it or not.

It is great to remember the spiritual origins of a

Christmas tree. But, even if we don’t, God is still there as we decorate. When we send that once-per-year card, Christ is with us as we tell our friend that we still care. The presents given to strangers and

loved ones alike are our way of sharing (God’s) love.

Since God is love, we cannot do any act of kindness and goodness withour Christ’s presence. Whether we have “religious” thought or not, Christ is still with us

this Christmas.
