Natter Week 3 Term 2 2017 Dear Parents, Police Band I would like to thank the members of the NSW Police band who performed for the whole school last Monday. It was fantastic for the children to hear the sound produced by a big band and see the conductor lead the musicians so effectively to all play as one. The band took the time to show and explain each instrument, highlighting the fun that can be had as part of a band. In addition to entertaining everyone, the performance provided an opportunity for our Performance band to play with the police musicians. While the band played, girls from our Years 3,4 and 5,6 Sydney North dance group performed their moves to Blame it on the Boogie, showcasing more of the creative talent we have in the school. I would like to thank Mr Tickle for organising this initiative as well as Jessica Manning and Mr Cox for coordinating our Performance band and Mrs Nicole for helping the dancers arrange their routine. Basketball Clinics Last Monday, Year 3 engaged in a basketball lesson to introduce them to the sport. The free tuition was given by Rad Radan from Manly Warringah Basketball Association, arranged by Mrs Nicol. The students had a great time while learning new skills. Year 4 will have the same opportunity later in the term. Thank you, Rad and Mrs Nicol. NAPLAN NAPLAN tests will be held this week. Writing and language conventions will be held on Tuesday May 9, Reading on Wednesday May 10 and Numeracy on Thursday May 11.

Natter Week 3 Term 2 2017

Dear Parents,

Police Band

I would like to thank the members of the NSW Police band who performed for the whole school last Monday.

NAPLAN

NAPLAN tests will be held this week. Writing and language conventions will be held on Tuesday May 9, Reading on Wednesday May 10 and Numeracy on Thursday May 11.

Students in Year 3 and Year 5 have been practising NAPLAN test techniques and have become familiar with the types of questions to expect. NAPLAN is designed to test the skills and knowledge students have learnt to this point in their schooling. We want every child to do well, understanding that the results, in no way, reflect the whole child. Knowing this, we don’t want NAPLAN to put undue stress on students. We hope that everyone can relax during the tests, put their “best foot forward” and achieve their personal best. P&C Mother’s Day Stall

The P&C Mother’s Day stall will be held this Friday. We appreciate all the support from our amazing community for these fundraising events and for the parents who take time out to organise and run the stalls on the day. Gifts from the stall cost $5 and children may buy more than one item. P&C Meeting

We will hold our first P&C meeting for the term, this Tuesday evening at 7pm in the library. I’d like to encourage all community members to attend to be involved in our very proactive committee that does so much to support parents and teachers to improve learning for students. Featuring this week will be a presentation from Newport Outside of School Hours Care (NOOSHC) and an explanation about changes to our school report format for Semester 1. Uniform

The neat, consistent appearance of our students is an extremely important part of our school culture. After a ‘phasing in’ period over the past two weeks, winter uniform is now compulsory for all students. Please see the photo of examples of our winter uniform. Further information about winter uniform requirements is available on the school website or from the uniform shop. Netball and Softball State KO wins

Congratulations to the girls involved in our netball and softball teams for convincing wins last week. It’s still early in both competitions but from all reports, the training the girls have been involved in is paying off. Both teams look strong and hopefully will be involved in many more successes this year. Kindergarten Information Sessions

I would like to remind everyone of the Kindergarten information sessions this Monday evening at 7pm in the library and at 10am Wednesday in the hall. These information sessions are particularly useful for families new to our school. If you are reading this and know families wanting to enrol their Kindergarten child in our school next year, can you please pass on the dates?

Page 3: Natter Week 3 Term 2 2017€¦ · to Blame it on the Boogie, showcasing more of the creative talent we have in the school. I would like to thank. Mr. Tickle for organising this initiative

If you have a child who is starting Kindergarten next year, making contact with our school office is important so we can add you to our data base, ensuring you receive all the relevant transition to school information for 2018. Morning Supervision

I would like to remind everyone that the school does not provide supervision for students before 8.55am each morning. Students should not be left at school before this time. Measles

Areas of NSW, in particular western Sydney, have recently experienced an outbreak of measles. Measles is a highly contagious viral disease and we have been asked to notify the local public health unit if we are informed that a student or staff member has contracted measles. NSW Health is urging parents to check that their child has received the necessary measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine or take advantage of the free measles vaccine, available at GPs and to look out for measles symptoms:

•Fever •Sore eyes •Cough •Following fever, sore eyes and cough - a red, blotchy rash typically spreading from the neck to the rest of the body that follows three to four days later. Measles is mostly spread by coughing and sneezing. For more information, please read NSW Health’s measles fact sheet. Tourette Syndrome Awareness Week

This week 8-15 May, is Tourette Syndrome Awareness Week. Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a neurological disorder characterised by rapid, repetitive, and involuntary muscle movements and vocalisations called tics. With one in every 100 children having some form of TS (often undiagnosed), it is the TS Association of Australia's aim to increase the awareness of this misunderstood condition as early intervention is the key to helping these children. The Tourette’s Association of Australia website contains information and guidance relevant to parents and educators, on how to deal with children with TS. More information can be found in the Natter and at www.tourette.org.au Crinkling News

We have recently been subscribing to Crinkling News, Australia’s only national newspaper for kids. Crinkling News is giving young Australians their first taste of real, quality news, inspiring them to start their own newspapers, developing their media literacy and interest in pursuing careers in journalism but most importantly, engaging in the world around them and in our community. This is very important.

Page 4: Natter Week 3 Term 2 2017€¦ · to Blame it on the Boogie, showcasing more of the creative talent we have in the school. I would like to thank. Mr. Tickle for organising this initiative

I was recently advised that the newspaper cannot continue after next week without funding to build on the extraordinary work of the last year. If you would like to see this newspaper continue and flourish, please consider donating to the cause https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/save-crinkling-news-kids-education#/ This Week and Next

Sports News PSSA We had the first round of the Winter PSSA competition on Friday. All students who played represented Newport to the best of their ability and with great sportsmanship at all times. Unfortunately the boy’s rugby league did not have a game, as Bilgola forfeited. There was also some disruption with the netball with two of the courts being under a construction site for the new bus line for the Northern Beaches.

Girls Softball KO The Girls’ Softball KO team played their first round of the state knockout competition on Wednesday at Narrabeen Reserve against Hornsby North PS. The girls warmed up and played in constant rain which created slippery, wet conditions. The girls put in a very strong performance. Each innings that the Newport girls batted, the opposition were unable to get the team out and we had to declare to end the innings. The girls were then once again very strong and composed in the field restricting Hornsby North to just 2 home. Newport won the game 15-2. The girls should all be proud of their efforts. We wish them the best of luck in their next game against Lisarow PS. Thank you to all the parent drivers. Zone Cross Country Carnival The Newport Cross Country Carnival Team has been training most mornings before school with Ms Mailler in preparation for the Zone Cross Country Carnival at North Narrabeen Reserve on Friday 19 May. We wish the students the best of luck. Please make sure permission notes are returned to the office ASAP. Students attending should see Mr Moran if they are unable to organise a lift on the day. Newport Athletics Carnival The Newport Athletics Carnival is on Wednesday 17 May at the Narrabeen Academy. Once again, this year we will be holding the field events as well as the track events which will mean children need to be at school by 6.45am, with the buses leaving promptly at 7am. We will post the finalists for long jump, high jump and shot-put in the new display board outside the staffroom by the end of the week. Children should check to see if they are in the finals. All children not in the finals will be welcome to compete in the “have a go” section where they can earn points for their house. Please return permission notes to your class teacher ASAP. We require parent helpers to ensure the day runs smoothly. Please indicate on the permission form if you are able to help.

Music News Music Camp Music Camp is less than two weeks away. It is the most important event on the Music Program’s calendar, with all members in the primary ensembles expected to attend. It combines intensive music tutorials and rehearsals with fun activities and games. This gives students the chance to develop as musicians, strengthen friendships with other students across all age groups and enjoy an experience they look forward to every year. Payment, on-line registration and medical forms are now overdue. Our volunteers are doing an excellent job in organising the camp and would appreciate your cooperation by completing the forms and paying on time. Payment can be made through Flexischools or via EFT. For any inquires please contact Tracy Gowen at [email protected].

Chess News Last Friday Newport Seniors played their first game in the NSW Junior Chess League's After School Tournament. While the Juniors picked up 4 points for a bye the Seniors weren't so lucky with a 4 to 0 loss against John Colet. This Friday the Juniors will have a home game against Wheeler Heights while the Seniors' game against Mona Vale has been postponed to a later date. Mark Tickle

Walk Safely to School Day

Friday 19 May 2017 is Walk Safely to School Day. This day is an annual, national event when all Primary School children are encouraged to walk and commute safely to school. It is a community event seeking to promote road safety, health, public transport and the environment.

Walk Safely to School Day asks that we all consider our transport habits and try to incorporate more walking as a part of a healthy, active way to get around. Although walking all the way to school every day isn’t realistic for many of us, it’s quite easy to organise a way to build a walk into your family’s daily routine.

You can teach your child the healthy habit of walking more by:

• Walking with them the whole way to school, • Walking past your usual bus stop and getting on the bus at a later stop, • Parking further away from school than usual and walking the rest of the way.

Regular exercise, like walking with your child, not only helps them (and you!) beat chronic problems like obesity, heart disease, diabetes and behavioural and mental health issues, it also gives you a great opportunity to teach your child safe ways to behave around roads and traffic.

Remember that active kids are healthy kids and make Walk Safely to School Day a regular part of your child’s day!

Newport students who walk all or part of the way to school will be greeted at the school gates by our Year 6 leaders and given a Walk Safely to School Day sticker to wear proudly on their uniform.
