The Friends of Lafitte Corridor celebrated during their annual hike of the

historic pathway on April 16 – a week or so before a contract was signed between the city and the architectural firm Design Workshop, which is now charged with doing the planning for a greenway and linear park along the corridor. Almost 400 residents showed up for the 3.1-mile trek, stretching from Bayou St. John to the edge of the French Quarter, that was once a portage canal and then a railroad track. Now the vision is a walking and biking pathway along a green space with targeted economic development along the way that helps to revitalize the surrounding neighborhoods. The project began when Bart Everson and a friend saw workers pulling up the tracks near Bayou St. John in April of 2005. As a biking commuter for a decade by that time,

they got the idea of turning it into a greenway and bike path. Everson contacted the national Rails to Trails Conservancy in Washington, D.C. and learned how to take on such a project and did some research, discovering he was not the first to have this idea. After Hurricane Katrina, the increased civic engagement across the city nurtured the greenway concept, and after the second annual hike, in May 2006, the Friends of Lafitte Corridor (FOLC) was born. After a film studio rose and fell on a 16-acre property along the corridor, but with a stipulation by the city that they reserve space for a bike path, Trust for Public Land purchased the property and helped to propel the project forward. Although the process of signing a contract with an architectural firm has been slow and hindered by the

change in administrations, the city’s planning phase has now begun. Now the FOLC’s Master Plan for the corridor, articulated in detail on the group’s website, FOLC-NOLA.org, will be translated into a project plan that will be implemented by the city in the next few years. The next step will be public meetings to gather information from the residents about their vision for the corridor.
