Dear Parishioners,

Today we are celebrating NFP week. NFP? Yes, NFP which stands for Natural Family Planning. This is a method of family planning that is all natural, hormone free, and free of charge. This is actually the only method of family planning that is endorsed by the Roman Catholic Church. Many couples do not know about it. Many doctors and nurses are not even familiar with it, interestingly. It is reportedly not readily taught in many medical schools and nursing programs. Sadly, many priests do not touch the topic in their marriage preparation with couples. One thing for sure: it is not the old rhythm method. The old rhythm method was effective only for those women who had a regular menstrual cycle. NFP works for all or most women, regardless of their cycle.

Reportedly the failure rate of NFP is less than anything artificial. Reportedly, the divorce rate among couples who practice NFP is lower than 2%. That’s good news. I do believe that the practice of NFP is easier for some couples than others as it requires 8-10 days of abstinence each month. Another advantage of NFP is that it can be utilized to be more familiar with one’s body and fertility and to target pregnancy. How different would the world be if all couples were open to life in marriage and they avoided anything artificial?

We continue with our capital campaign to achieve our dreams and build for the future of Holy Family. Somebody told me that to give to the capital campaign would not do her any good because she is getting old, and she wouldn’t be able to enjoy the new parish center. So, we had a conversation. I reminded her of Matthew 10:8 in the new testament: “Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give.”

I mentioned to her about a homily that I gave last week, Morris Kertzer is a writer. In his book What Is a Jew? he says every Hebrew child learns the story of Honi the traveler. One day Honi met an old man planting tiny fruit trees. He asked him, "When will the trees bear fruit?" The old man replied, "Probably years after I am dead." Honi said, "Why plant them then, if you'll never eat their fruit?" The old man replied, "I didn't find the world without trees when I was born, so I plant them for others, as they did for me."

We are challenged to give without counting the cost. We are reminded that we need to stop looking at the return that WE receive personally. It is possible to get too focused on the benefits to us. Instead we are reminded to simply serve, give, plant seeds and stop focusing on the immediate benefits to us personally. We can’t be looking for recognition or honors either. That’s not what giving is about. Albert Einstein basically said, “I realize how much my life I owe to others and how earnestly I must exert myself to give in return as much as I have received.” Give. Serve. Give. Love. Give. That’s our motto. We don’t look back. We don’t focus on the results. We don’t focus on the return. We simply give. That’s what Jesus did. As his disciples, we try to do the same. Summer Blessings – Fr. Jim Bevacqua, Pastor 818-247-2222 x225 [email protected]

THIS WEEK AT HOLY FAMILY AROUND THE DIOCESE

7

The SCRC Catholic Renewal Convention seeks to fulfill the promise of the Charismatic Renewal and provide an atmosphere that is energized by unified praise and worship, solid Catholic teaching, and powerful prayer, while inviting the Holy Spirit to be present.

The guest speakers often note a personal in-filling of the Holy Spirit as they give their presentations. As a result, their teachings even more poignantly pierce the hearts of the listeners in the way that the Spirit intends for each. The liturgies seem to become more alive with even deeper meaning when coupled with all these other elements. The opportunities for prayer ministry provide a connection with God's healing touch that is life changing.

With such a welcoming of the Spirit, there is always a sweeping, loving and healing response upon every open heart, according to each person's need. At the close of the Convention, it is often heard, time and time again, that the hearts and minds of the people have been brought to a new level of faith, hope and peace that they never, ever expected to achieve in this lifetime. It's truly a taste of heaven on earth. Pope Francis as well as our last three popes — Pope Benedict XVI, Pope John Paul II, and Pope Paul VI — have strongly endorsed the Charismatic Renewal as being a precious resource for the life of the Church.

The 2019 SCRC Convention provides a choice of programs: Regular Talks, a special Christ Triumphant spiritual warfare track, Teen Conference, Children's Program, Spanish Conference, Priest Day, and other special programs. Many run concurrently and offer a wide variety for different ages and interests. For Regular and special track ticket holders, a registrant will attend a talk during each of 10 sessions spread out over Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Each talk has a speaker (sometimes two) who will discuss the announced topic, as well as musicians and singers who will provide music ministry. Every evening there is a large liturgy in the Arena. On Saturday night there is a Mass and healing service, which is free and open to the public.

In our world, sadly, it can seem like nothing is sacred. This includes some people who take advantage of others and impersonate priests. Not long ago in Los Angeles, a man was arrested for fraud claiming to be a priest – having cheated people out of thousands of dollars for phony ministry. And sadly, there also are some former priests who have engaged in misconduct and been disciplined by their bishops and superiors, who travel around and conduct “services” in homes and parks and other places, claiming to be acting in the name of the church. These men have no authorization to conduct any services in the name of the Catholic Church. If you encounter someone claiming to be a priest who is not assigned to a par-ish and he offers to help with a funeral, baptism, wedding or some other ser-vice, first check with your parish office to make sure he is a genuine priest and in good standing. Priests traveling to our area from other dioceses around the world must secure the permission of Archbishop Gomez before they are authorized to conduct public ministry in the name of the Church. This is a requirement of Church law to assure that he is a legitimate priest in good standing, with no ecclesiastical penalties. All the priests of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles are required to follow these regulations whenever they travel to other places. Through the Archdiocesan Vicar for Clergy, a parish is able to check into the background of anyone claim-ing to be a priest to make sure that no one is taken advantage of by those who misrepresent themselves and abuse people’s sacred trust. Thank you.

Gracias.
