Dear Readers,

“Tradition is a lantern. The foolish hold on to it. The clever allow it to

lead the way,” said the famous Irish playwright and politician George

Bernard Shaw. We think he was right. In the past several months

we have worked hard on a gentle, tradition-conscious and yet bold new

presentation of our brand profi le. All products and media have been

redesigned. Our new and improved system-based skin care series

ZZ SENSITIVE (p.8) is fi rst to have its makeover. On p.22, you can

fi nd our newly developed, innovative and vegan intensive concentrate

in the BEAUTY SHOTS, which will be sure to deliver an instant impact.

This new redesign applies not only to individual advertising media,

but in fact to our whole customer magazime, NATURAL WOMAN.

You are holding the fi rst redesigned issue in your hands right now!

The new design will make our products and their unique method of

action even easier to recognize in the future. Our new quality seal

(p. 21) shows at a glance what makes our effective natural cosmetics

so special and what we, a company from the Black Forest in operation

since 1959, stand for: a pioneering scientifi c spirit, quality in everything

we do, and a respectful, responsible attitude towards nature.

Becoming a mother shifted this

hard-working woman’s focus to health

living, quality of life, and responsi-

bility for the environment where her

children are growing up in. Her quality

requirements of household products

and toiletries automatically increased.

The actress had campaigned for

environmental protection and legis-

lation against chemical products even

in her younger years. Her motivation:

as a a child, she suffered from asthma,

allergies, and their unpleasant side

effects. That experience has made her

all the more careful in selecting her

own toiletries. She makes it a priority to

ensure that ingredients and packaging

contain no harmful substances – one

of the many reasons that ANNEMARIE

BÖRLIND products are among

her favorites. Jessica Alba and her

husband also believe that teaching

their daughters to live healthy,

conscientious lives right from the

start is of great importance. The

Hollywood couple sets a good

example in their green household.

They try, for example, to avoid as

much packaging waste as possible.

The two girls are also learning to

recycle, care for the environment and

the next generation is already helping

to make the world a better place,

But it responds quickly to a wide

ZZ SENSITIVE system-based skin care

series from ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND is

taking an entirely different, innovative

path. The Research and Development

department led by Guylaine Le Loarer

is focusing on strengthening the

natural skin barrier. The skin’s fl ora –

also known as the microbiome –

forms a protective wall of micro-

organisms which defend the skin

against attacks by both disease-

causing and non-disease-causing

bacteria. The scientifi c ‘Human

initiative from the US National

exactly how our microbiome works.

The project researched bacteria’s

that disrupt the skin’s natural balance.

conditions such as sensitive skin,” says

Guylaine Le Loarer. After all, sensitive

skin is not diseased. Its is merely

out of balance, leaving it unable to

function as an effective barrier. This is

where the optimized ZZ SENSITIVE

products come in. The pre- and

probiotic active complex they contain

is made up of oligosaccharides. These

polysaccharides derived from yacón,

red beets and corn are combined with

freeze-dried lactic acid bacteria. They

are inactive, meaning that they do

not multiply in the fi nished product.

“That is important in relation to the

product’s germ content, which is

regulated by the German Cosmetics

Ordinance,” explains the Director

of Research. However, they are still

effective on the skin, helping to

restore its natural balance. Another

new ingredient, an established and

successful component of traditional

Chinese medicine, is the golden

orchid. It is especially helpful in

regulating the skin’s protective acid

mantle. The active ingredient, which

has been integrated into the ZZ

SENSITIVE system-based skin care

series, strengthens the epidermis

and reduces sensitive skin fl are-ups.

THE GOAL IS HEALTHY, WELL-BALANCED SKIN

Once skin reactions have been

brought under control, the innovative

double principle from ANNEMARIE

BÖRLIND can take effect. When the

skin is well-balanced, it is also able

to absorb regenerating substances.

Such as white lupine. Active sub-

stances in the plant stimulate collagen

production, which in turn improves the

skin’s elasticity and tone and fi rms up

contours. This makes the regenerating

day and night creams from the ZZ

SENSITIVE system-based skin care

series genuine innovations for sensi-

tive skin. “These days, it is not enough

just to offer products suitable for the

customer’s respective skin type.

We here at ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND

want to put our customers at the

forefront of product development,”

says Guylaine Le Loarer. Used as an

overall skin care system, the perfectly

coordinated products have a soothing,

protective and strengthening effect.

This enables the skin to become its

most beautiful; blossoming in youthful

freshness once again.

GOODBYE STRESSANNEMARIE BÖRLIND is setting the gold standard for all those with sensitive skin by including pre- and probiotic active substances in its products, as approximately half the popu-lation in Germany has sensitive skin. Unlike people with healthy skin, the invisible ecosystem of microorganisms in people with sensitive skin has become im-balanced. Reasons for this im-balance include using cosmetics unsuitable for your skin type,

cigarette smoke, pollutants, cold and excessive washing. These influences weaken the skin barrier, which can lead to pimples, itching, burning, feelings of tightness or red patches. The skin becomes stressed. In addition to containing innovative active substances, ZZ SENSITIVE pro-ducts were developed specifically without substances that could trigger allergies or reactions. They contain no fragrances, dyes or preservatives.

27 Letters from Readers, Questions

and Answers, Imprint.

Please let me know how you like our new brand identity. I am eager

to hear what you think and look forward to your comments. Please

send your e-mail to [email protected].

Sincerely yours,

10BEAUTYZZ SENSITIVE

conditions such as sensitive skin,” says

Guylaine Le Loarer. After all, sensitive

skin is not diseased. Its is merely

out of balance, leaving it unable to

function as an effective barrier. This is

where the optimized ZZ SENSITIVE

products come in. The pre- and

probiotic active complex they contain

is made up of oligosaccharides. These

polysaccharides derived from yacón,

red beets and corn are combined with

freeze-dried lactic acid bacteria. They

are inactive, meaning that they do

not multiply in the fi nished product.

“That is important in relation to the

product’s germ content, which is

regulated by the German Cosmetics

Ordinance,” explains the Director

of Research. However, they are still

effective on the skin, helping to

restore its natural balance. Another

new ingredient, an established and

successful component of traditional

Chinese medicine, is the golden

orchid. It is especially helpful in

regulating the skin’s protective acid

mantle. The active ingredient, which

has been integrated into the ZZ

SENSITIVE system-based skin care

series, strengthens the epidermis

and reduces sensitive skin fl are-ups.

THE GOAL IS HEALTHY, WELL-BALANCED SKIN

Once skin reactions have been

brought under control, the innovative

double principle from ANNEMARIE

BÖRLIND can take effect. When the

skin is well-balanced, it is also able

to absorb regenerating substances.

Such as white lupine. Active sub-

stances in the plant stimulate collagen

production, which in turn improves the

skin’s elasticity and tone and fi rms up

contours. This makes the regenerating

day and night creams from the ZZ

SENSITIVE system-based skin care

series genuine innovations for sensi-

tive skin. “These days, it is not enough

just to offer products suitable for the

customer’s respective skin type.

We here at ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND

want to put our customers at the

forefront of product development,”

says Guylaine Le Loarer. Used as an

overall skin care system, the perfectly

coordinated products have a soothing,

protective and strengthening effect.

This enables the skin to become its

most beautiful; blossoming in youthful

freshness once again.

GOODBYE STRESSANNEMARIE BÖRLIND is setting the gold standard for all those with sensitive skin by including pre- and probiotic active substances in its products, as approximately half the popu-lation in Germany has sensitive skin. Unlike people with healthy skin, the invisible ecosystem of microorganisms in people with sensitive skin has become im-balanced. Reasons for this im-balance include using cosmetics unsuitable for your skin type,

cigarette smoke, pollutants, cold and excessive washing. These influences weaken the skin barrier, which can lead to pimples, itching, burning, feelings of tightness or red patches. The skin becomes stressed. In addition to containing innovative active substances, ZZ SENSITIVE pro-ducts were developed specifically without substances that could trigger allergies or reactions. They contain no fragrances, dyes or preservatives.

THE ROSEOF JERICHO

MIRACLE IN THE DESERTIt is a novelty in the plant king-dom – the resurrection plant also known as the Rose of Jericho. It can survive in some cases for decades without water, losing 98 per centof its moisture. But just a few drops of rain are all that is needed to bring the spikey brown leaves back to life. Almost like magic, the Rose of Jericho unfolds into a plant again. In the cosmetics industry, extracts derived from this plant are used to lock moisture into the skin and strengthen the skin barrier.

barrier. This natural bulwark for our

body is built like a wall. The horn

cells are the bricks, while a mix of

lipids and proteins serves as the

mortar. Stimuli such as washing,

aggressive skin cleansers or shaving

can irritate this barrier. A deodorant

should therefore not only stop odors,

it should be gentle to the skin as well.

Sprays and roll-ons with substances

like organic aloe vera soothe and

moisturize the skin. So does licorice

root extract, which also acts as an

infl ammation inhibitor. Products

containing no alcohol are especially

gentle to the skin and can be applied

to the sensitive skin under the arms

even immediately after shaving.

Deodorants should also be free of

aluminum salts. These salts constrict

the sweat glands, which causes

Rosy, even and radiant: this is

how we love our skin. But

external stimuli can sometimes

weaken this fragile hull. It becomes

chapped, dry and is no longer able to

retain moisture. These symptoms then

lead to itching and fl aking. But the

appropriate skin care products can

transform skin as rough as sandpaper

back into the softest silk.

RECOGNIZING THE SKIN’S NEEDS

The interplay of moisture and oil is

crucial. Dry skin thirsts for both.

Substances such as urea, panthenol,

and hyaluronic acid moisturize skin

and foster its ability to retain mois-

ture. Vegetable oils like borage seed

and evening primrose oil, closely

resemble the skin’s own oils, which

ensures that moisture is locked into

the skin and that the hydro lipid

mantle can regenerate. This process

is facilitated by substances such as

vegetable squalene. It leaves skin soft

but not oily. A similar compound is a

part of skin’s protective acid mantle.

Dry, tight skin is especially unpleasant

in the eye area and quickly becomes

visible in the form of small lines and

wrinkles. The skin is extremely thin

here and contains few sebum and

sweat glands. In addition to the eyes

blinking approximately 10,000 times

a day, skin in the eye area is also

put under strain by heating and air

conditioning and exposure to UV rays.

Products with hydrating substances

such as hyaluronic acid improve the

skin’s look and feel. Polyunsaturated

fatty acids in vegetable oils such as

Inca peanut oil strengthen the skin

root extract, which also acts as an

infl ammation inhibitor. Products

containing no alcohol are especially

gentle to the skin and can be applied

to the sensitive skin under the arms

even immediately after shaving.

Deodorants should also be free of

aluminum salts. These salts constrict

the sweat glands, which causes

Rosy, even and radiant: this is

how we love our skin. But

external stimuli can sometimes

weaken this fragile hull. It becomes

chapped, dry and is no longer able to

retain moisture. These symptoms then

lead to itching and fl aking. But the

appropriate skin care products can

transform skin as rough as sandpaper

back into the softest silk.

RECOGNIZING THE SKIN’S NEEDS

The interplay of moisture and oil is

crucial. Dry skin thirsts for both.

Substances such as urea, panthenol,

and hyaluronic acid moisturize skin

and foster its ability to retain mois-

ture. Vegetable oils like borage seed

and evening primrose oil, closely

resemble the skin’s own oils, which

ensures that moisture is locked into

the skin and that the hydro lipid

mantle can regenerate. This process

is facilitated by substances such as

vegetable squalene. It leaves skin soft

but not oily. A similar compound is a

part of skin’s protective acid mantle.

Dry, tight skin is especially unpleasant

in the eye area and quickly becomes

visible in the form of small lines and

wrinkles. The skin is extremely thin

here and contains few sebum and

sweat glands. In addition to the eyes

blinking approximately 10,000 times

a day, skin in the eye area is also

put under strain by heating and air

conditioning and exposure to UV rays.

Products with hydrating substances

such as hyaluronic acid improve the

skin’s look and feel. Polyunsaturated

fatty acids in vegetable oils such as

Inca peanut oil strengthen the skin

The phytoplankton comes from a special

ecosystem in France, the Aber Benoît

sugar molecule, Exopolysaccharide 15,

from the phytoplankton. The molecule

Please let me know how you like our new brand identity. I am eager

to hear what you think and look forward to your comments. Please

send your e-mail to [email protected].

with its amazing ability to strengthen

BEAUTY SHOTS contain additional

explains, this stimulates the skin’s own

on the latest scientifi c fi ndings,

ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND is eliciting

hidden beauty potential from other

plants as well. Szechuan pepper in

the ANTI AGING REVITALIZER, for

example, helps to relax the facial

features. It is enhanced by an oil

derived from the sap droplets of the

Greek mastic pistachio. “It stimulates

the skin’s youthful genes. This

activates the synthesis of proteins

that are responsible for fi rm, youthful

skin and that reduce fi ne lines

and wrinkles,” explains the Head of

Research and Development for

BÖRLIND GmbH. She and her team

subjected all of the BEAUTY SHOTS

to strict tests for biocompatibility and

effectiveness. Applied to cleansed

skin, the intensive concentrates are

absorbed almost instantly and, as

if by magic, the skin radiates with the

power of the sea and its plants.

Can you eat ‘botanical caviar’

too? What can it be used for?

BRIGITTE GRASS, LEIPZIG

That is

a good

question!

‘Botanical

caviar’ is

made from

macroalgae

and is used

in our BEAUTY PEARLS. People

do eat botanical caviar in Asia,

where it is valued for its ability to

lower blood pressure. The high

vitamin and mineral content in

botanical caviar make it an excellent

source of nutrients. Botanical caviar

is especially popular among the

inhabitants of the Japanese island

of Okinawa, the “island of cente-

narians,” whose age and good health

are attributable to diet and lifestyle.

In cosmetics, botanical caviar

facilitates better cohesion between

the epidermis and the dermis,

thereby improving and fi rming

the skin structure. It is a striking

example of the motto: “I only

put on my skin what I would also

to be harmful to health. Do you

use them in your products?

TINA STEILER, STUTTGART

MOAHs (mineral oil aromatic

hydrocarbons) are aromatic hydro-

carbons based on mineral oil.

As pioneers in the fi eld of natural

cosmetics, we naturally do not use

them – or many other substances

that are hazardous to health.

For those who suff er from

rosacea, it is important to use

products that contain little

or no alcohol and that

do not leave a coating

on the skin, i.e. they

are not too oily.

We developed the

27 Letters from Readers, Questions

and Answers, Imprint.

Please let me know how you like our new brand identity. I am eager

to hear what you think and look forward to your comments. Please

send your e-mail to [email protected].

Sincerely yours,

here. This was how ANNEMARIE

BÖRLIND discovered phytoplankton

with its amazing ability to strengthen

the skin barrier and reduce infl am-

mation. The formulas for the individual

BEAUTY SHOTS contain additional

innovative new active ingredients,

such as the red algae in the HYDRO

BOOSTER. And as Guylaine Le Loarer

explains, this stimulates the skin’s own

hyaluronic acid production. Drawing

on the latest scientifi c fi ndings,

ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND is eliciting

hidden beauty potential from other

plants as well. Szechuan pepper in

the ANTI AGING REVITALIZER, for

example, helps to relax the facial

features. It is enhanced by an oil

derived from the sap droplets of the

Greek mastic pistachio. “It stimulates

the skin’s youthful genes. This

activates the synthesis of proteins

that are responsible for fi rm, youthful

skin and that reduce fi ne lines

and wrinkles,” explains the Head of

Research and Development for

BÖRLIND GmbH. She and her team

subjected all of the BEAUTY SHOTS

to strict tests for biocompatibility and

effectiveness. Applied to cleansed

skin, the intensive concentrates are

absorbed almost instantly and, as

if by magic, the skin radiates with the

power of the sea and its plants.

Can you eat ‘botanical caviar’

too? What can it be used for?

BRIGITTE GRASS, LEIPZIG

That is

a good

question!

‘Botanical

caviar’ is

made from

macroalgae

and is used

in our BEAUTY PEARLS. People

do eat botanical caviar in Asia,

where it is valued for its ability to

lower blood pressure. The high

vitamin and mineral content in

botanical caviar make it an excellent

source of nutrients. Botanical caviar

is especially popular among the

inhabitants of the Japanese island

of Okinawa, the “island of cente-

narians,” whose age and good health

are attributable to diet and lifestyle.

In cosmetics, botanical caviar

facilitates better cohesion between

the epidermis and the dermis,

thereby improving and fi rming

the skin structure. It is a striking

example of the motto: “I only

put on my skin what I would also

put in my mouth.”

Mineral oils in cosmetics are said

to be harmful to health. Do you

use them in your products?
