How I work

I work in a ligh-filled sudio overlooking he garden of my home in he small own of Wegberg in Germany. For

inspiraion a he sar of a projec, Ill look o naure or my mood board covered wih painings, fabric, and oher

elemens ha I updae all he ime, or skeches I made while raveling around he world. For me, each design is abou

coninually balancing rich deail and simpliciy.

Naure has always been my muse. Even my earlies drawings as a child were of naure. Wheher in my garden, a park,

or he woods, Im filled wih a sense of wonder and curiosiy. Theres a imelessness in naure, where everyhing else

jus falls away and Im simply observing, fully experiencing whas around me.

When I sar any projec he mos imporan and challenging hing is o find a srong concep I can build on. Ill

capure my ideas on paper, scan he skeches, and hen pu hem ino Adobe Illusraor and sar oulining using my

graphics able, which is somehing Id never give away, no even for a housand of he fines chocolaes.

Geting sared

Venus is a wonderful heme for a projec. She embodies so many amazing characerisics including sensualiy,

chasiy, and femininiy. This projec capures so many design elemens and hemes ha inspire me every day. I

made exensive use of he new Paern Creaion feaure o creae rich paerns ha repea across a apesry of

beauiful, free-flowing naural forms including plans, animals, and of course, he ehereal Venus.

I really have wo hears

when i comes o design: one

inspiring me o capure every

deail, no mater how small;and anoher yearning for

very simple, plain elemens.

In a world overwhelmed

by informaion, houghful

empy space is a luxury.

Breaking down some of he design elemens

My usual workflow involves a lo of iniial skechesmany of which Ill never use, bu I wan

o feel he design and he direcion i will ake me.

For example, he leaves in he op drawing o he lef were oo much like auumn. For me,Venus is abou spring, which is beer represened by he skeches on he boom.

Because is he 25hanniversary of Adobe Illusraor, I subsiued he seashell ypically

associaed wih Venus wih he words 25 Years. I creaed wo ellipses and yped along he

pah. Laer, I expanded and ungrouped he fon so I could rearrange he leers and number.

Te new Patern Creaion feaureis absoluely fanasic, and you can

creae your patern in seconds.

Patern basics

Venus hair consiss of hree layers. I didn care abou he color because

I planned o replace i wih ligh and dark paerns.

Is easy o use he new Paern Creaion feaure in Illusraor CS6. I simply

chose Objec > Paern > Make. I didn change he main pars of paern,

and insead changed he backgrounds and some colors o capure he

ligh and dark conrass o pu ino Venus hair.

Then, I quickly subsiued he colors of he hair wih he new paerns.

I ook his same approach wih paerns

for oher design elemens. Using differen

colors in he original design, I hen

creaed corresponding paerns.

A quick way o replace he color fi ll of he

shapes wih paerns is o choose a color,

go o Selec > Same > Fill Color, and jus

replace he color wih your paern of choice.

Patern ipsI kep using my new friendhe Paern Creaion feaureo find ways o

simplify my design process, while enhancing he qualiy of my finished design.

For he rees, I oulined and arranged leaves and branches. In his example,

you can see I dimmed he copies, which is really useful when creaing

complex paerns. You can change he overlaps wih jus one click.

To hide some of he paern boundaries in he final piece, I placed some

flowers and leaves on a layer above he paern, as seen below.

Patern brushes

For he ree runks in my design, I buil andarranged some simple shapes wih he blend ool.

In he Paern Opions Panel, I chose 3x1 as a

repea and decreased he heigh of he paern

unil I found a nice, smooh verical repea.

The paern is creaed auomaically when you

leave he Paern Opions Panel. To make a

seamless paern brush, drag he paern from he

swaches panel o he arboardhen roae i 90

degrees and drag i ino he brushes panel.

Now he fun par: choose he paern brush andsimply drag a verical line and see how i looks.

You can play wih i by changing sroke widhs

and colors.
