I have the privilege of being the Chaplain to Antarctica New Zealand.Over the years I have visited Scott Base several times, particularlyaround the time when we remember those who were killed in theErebus air disaster in 1979.

While I won't have the opportunity to travel to the Ice this year, last Thursday, as I do each year, I went to Christchurch to meet and present to the team of people [around 80 of them],who will be travelling to Scott Base for some or all of the summer season.

They work very hard while they are at Scott Base and are very focussed on supporting the scientific programmes which are so vital to our future.

Antarctica is of course a place of extreme beauty. It is both fragile and dangerous. There can be profound sense of isolation and loneliness in the deafening silence of the Ice, even though often surrounded by your colleagues at the base. Scott Base is both stimulating and can also over time be quite a hot house environment with people living in such close proximity to each other. As the chaplain, once I hopefully have got through the barrier of the 'dog collar', my purpose is to be available to everyone of whatever faith or not, by phone or Skype, as a safe pair of ears.

On Thursday I told some stories about my time in Antarctica and how it has shapedmy life. Above all else I encouraged them to take time out to embrace this wondrous place. You know the phrase 'you are closer to God in a garden, than any place else on earth.' Well I venture to say that to pause, to be still in this awesome silence, in this pristine wilderness, is to be as close as can be to the 'ground of our being'. It is what the Celtic church calls a 'thin place', where we may truly experiencethe divine in a way which is beyond words.

Why am I writing this to you? It is because that experience is open to each of us here of course if we will but let it be so. As I write this, I'm looking out across St Mary's graveyard at the magnolia in full blossom and the field of daffodils. It would be so easy to ignore them and just get on. But when I pause, still the chatter in my head, and soak up this beauty, then I sense myself being nourished and held in the love of God. The power of the pause. 'Be still in the presence of the Lord' and know that 'the Holy One is near'. Make space in the business of your lives and of your worship simply to wait on God, rest in Him and God will be as balm for your soul.

Building the future - next Sunday! At 12 pm next Sunday we, the people of Taranaki's cathedral community, with our Bishop, will host this important hui to to set out and share the developing vision for our cathedral into the future. Māori leaders, political leaders, community supporters and fellow Anglicans will be joining us as an invitation is offered to the Reeves family that Sir Paul's name be associated with our vision of peace and reconciliation and in particular the Atrium development. Lunch will follow and then Archbishop Philip will lay out our intent for the future. The hui is an historic moment in our life as Taranaki's Cathedral. [Further copies of the background paper to the hui by Archbishop Philip are available today, on the cathedral website and at the welcome desk] If you have not done so already, please sign up at our services today or call the parish office, so that we have an idea of numbers for catering.
