Amen

Please be seated for the Readings / Nga Karaipiture – E noho

Reader A Reading from the book of Isaiah (Chapter 40:1-11)

Comfort, O comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that she has served her term, that herpenalty is paid, that she has received from the Lord’s hand double for all her sins.

A voice cries out: ‘In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all people shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.’

A voice says, ‘Cry out!’ And I said, ‘What shall I cry?’ All people are grass, their constancy is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades, when the breath of the Lord blows upon it; surely the people are grass. The grass withers, the flower fades; but the word of our God will stand for ever. Get you up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good tidings; lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good tidings, lift it up, do not fear; say to the cities of Judah, ‘Here is your God!’ See, the Lord God comes with might, and his arm rules for him; his reward is with him, and his recompense before him. He will feed his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms, and carry them in his bosom, and gently lead the mother sheep.

Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church.

All Thanks be to God.Reader A Reading from the 2nd Letter of the Apostle Peter (Chapter 3:8-15a)

But do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like one day. The Lord is not slow abouthis promise, as some think of slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting any

Welcome to our Interim Cathedral in the Peace Hall Page 3

to perish, but all to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fire, and the earth and everything that is done on it will be disclosed.

Since all these things are to be dissolved in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in leading lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set ablaze and dissolved, and the elements will melt with fire? But, in accordance with his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness is at home.

Therefore, beloved, while you are waiting for these things, strive to be found by him at peace, without spot or blemish; and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation. Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church.

All Thanks be to God.At 10am we sing the Gradual Hymn in preparation for the Gospel1. Come, thou long-expected Jesus, born to set thy people free;from our fears and sins release us; let us find our rest in thee.

2. Israel’s strength and consolation, hope of all the earth thou art, dear desire of every nation, joy of every longing heart.

3. Born thy people to deliver; born a child and yet a king;born to reign in us for ever; now thy gracious kingdom bring.

4. By thine own eternal Spirit, rule in all our hearts alone:by thine all-sufficient merit, raise us to thy glorious throne.

Please stand and turn to face the Gospel and the Cross... / Ka tū te katoa

Reader Hear the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to St Mark (chapter 1:1-8)

All (Sung at the 10am Service) Praise and Glory to God. The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

As it is written in the prophet Isaiah, ‘See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way; the voice of one crying out in the wilderness:

“Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight” ’, John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the riverJordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. He proclaimed,

‘The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.’ This is the Gospel of Christ.

The Great Thanksgiving / Te Whakawhetai Nui

Priest Father, we give you thanks and praise through your beloved Son Jesus Christ, your living Word, through whom you have created all things; who was sent by you in your great goodness to be our Saviour. By the power of the Holy Spirit he took flesh; as your Son, born of the blessedVirgin, he lived on earth and went about among us; he opened wide his arms for us on the cross; he put an end to death by dying for us;

A member of the Community of the Cross of Nails Page 6

and revealed the resurrection by rising to new life; so he fulfilled your will and won for you a holy people. Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and saying:

All Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Priest Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness; grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit, and according to your holy will, these gifts of bread and wine may be to us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance ofme. Great is the mystery of faith:

All Christ has died: Christ is risen: Christ will come again.Priest And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect

sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world; rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his comingin glory, we celebrate this memorial of our redemption. As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we bring before you this bread and this cup and we thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdom all who share this one bread and one cup, so that we, in the company of all the saints, may praise and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. Amen. [silence]

2. Startled by the solemn warning, let the earth-bound soul arise;Christ, her sun, all sloth dispelling, shines upon the morning skies.

3. Lo, the Lamb, so long expected, comes with pardon down from heaven;let us haste, with tears of sorrow, one and all to be forgiven;

4. So when next he comes with glory, wrapping all the earth in fear, may he then as our defender, on the clouds of heaven appear.

5. Honour, glory, virtue, merit, to the Father and the Son,with the co-eternal Spirit, while unending ages run.

Welcome to our Interim Cathedral in the Peace Hall Page 9

The weekly letter is from Ailsa Claridge.Dear friendsDid you come to the service for the “Blessing of the AdventWreaths” just over a week ago? So many beautiful wreaths broughtby children and adults alike to be blessed. After the service, eachwreath then going back to a school or a church family to accompanythat community on their Advent journeying. Each of those wreaths signalling people all over our city who are making the same journey as we are. Children, young people, couples, people living alone, older folk – all of us waiting and watching. I’ve been thinking about the Advent candles over the week since we lit the first one, thecandle of Hope. Today we light the candle of Peace. And the following two weeks, candles for joy and love. Which is the candle that expresses what you long for this Christmas: Hope, Peace, Joy or Love? They are each so far from the commercial trappings of Christmas with the demand of retailers for us to ‘shop til we drop’. Of feasting where we are encouraged to eat extravagantly when in reality many of our world will go hungry. What a complex world we live in. a world of mixed up values and demands, of inequality and injustice. And yet we are journeying in Advent to once again gaze at the manger, the animal feeding trough, where the Christ child lay. Immanuel, God with us. God whose kingdom really is about peace and love, joy and hope for all people. What about you, this the second week of Advent, the week where Peace is the theme. I wonder what thoughts come to your mind as you hear the word “Peace”. Spend some time this week in reflection. Take the word “Peace”, say it slowly, over and over a few times and let it flood your being. And then just be still. Allow peace to soak into you. Allow your heart and mind, your body, your soul to slow down and receive it. Make a point of it, each day this week just to be still in amongst all that is busy and seeks to demand of you. Take time aside for peace. Be nourished by it in this Advent journey. This week we are also invited to reflect on preparation. Preparation for the coming of Christ through the story of John the Baptist. John the Baptist who was the voice crying out in the wilderness “Prepare the way of the Lord; make his paths straight.” What does that mean for us? To prepare the way of the Lord. What does that preparation look like? The preparation for the kingdom of God to be amongst us?Would it have something to do with the hungry being fed? The thirsty having something to drink? The stranger being welcomed? The naked having clothing? The sick being cared for? And those in prison being visited? Would it be to do with the scattering of the proud and the bringing down of the powerful? The lifting up of the lowly and the filling of the hungry with good things? The topsy-turvey values that are

A member of the Community of the Cross of Nails Page 10

so very contrasting from the way many societies function? This year, we will again create hampers for those who on Christmas Day would be otherwise hungry or eat with meals no different to the scant meals they have any otherday of the year. We will again on Boxing Day be gathering gifts to be distributed to those in our city who are in need of even the basics, through “Give Something Back”. And each Sunday we will gather non-perishable food items in our Food-bank basket for the Food Bank. We will make a difference for the hungry. What will you do? How will you become involved?

With love, Ailsa
