PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE – Mary Ellen Sussman

This year has gone by so quickly, I wouldn’t believe that it’s May except that the trees have just burst into bloom and my tulips are glorious. But, last fall I forgot a basic lesson of tulip culture. Even if you worship parrot tulips, (as I do) it’s best to plant several different varieties. Otherwise, they all bloom at once…and then you have none! There will not be a single one left for “Art in Bloom,” where they had figured prominently in my plans.

Even though our club year is winding down, there’s a whole lot to look forward to. First, of course, is “Art in Bloom.” Then we have the plant sale (where I never dress warmly enough, no matter how sunny the day.) Then there’s the annual luncheon, this year at Eastward Ho! And then, we go to the WAFA show in Boston, which I am REALLY looking forward to.

And that’s not enough? There’s still the trip to the hydrangea farm on Nantucket on July 13 th. After that, a well-deserved summer break for all of us.

I hope you will plan to come to the annual luncheon on June 8 th. It’s a chance to have a good lunch with a spectacular view of Pleasant Bay, get to know some new (or old) members, meet this year’s scholarship winners, and congratulate the winners of our design and horticulture competitions. Also, this year’s terrific class of provisional members will be welcomed into the club.

It’s been such a pleasure working with all of you this year. I’m proud to be part of such a great club.

“ART IN BLOOM” – Nancy Clough/Wendy BellavanceMany thanks for all who made Art in Bloom a success.  As always, the designs were beautiful, and the willingness to pitch in even more so!

PLANT SALE – Gretel Norgeot

Our annual plant sale will be held at Friends Market Place on Saturday, May 28 th

beginning at 7:00 AM. All members are expected to contribute at least six plants to the sale, and have them pre-marked with identification tags and prices. Please deliver your plants by 6:00 AM. Besides contributing plants, members are asked to help set up the sale, assist customers with their purchases, and help clean up afterward. So, be sure to come and help make this fund-raiser a big success.

GARDEN THERAPY – Heidi Quill

By June we will have completed five projects with the students at the Latham School this year. We started off the year with a mixed dried and live arrangement in small hollowed out pumpkins with Norie Leonard and Peggy Sheehan as our leaders. In December Martine Amundson and Barbara Blanchard spearheaded the group, and we made silver, blue and white holiday arrangements with greens. Marcia Bechtold, Mal Bornemeier, and Nancy Miller led our Valentine effort, making cards with live flowers. In April, it was spring baskets planted with pansies and a decorated egg led by Judy Johnson, Sally Drew and Heidi Quill. June will be container plantings for the campus that we will expect to see when we return in the fall. Judy Saulnier, Joanne Smith, and Barbara Blanchard are directing that project. A special thank you to the provisional group, who had four or five members present to help at each event. We really couldn’t have completed all these projects without them! Kate McNulty even came three times. Please get in touch with Heidi Quill (508 945 5093) if you’d like to be involved with us at the Latham School next year.

SCHOLARSHIPS – Stacey Morgano

This year the club awarded three scholarships of $5000 each for the 2011-2012 academic year. Because the amount of the scholarships was so generous, we had graduate students applying for the first time, in addition to many junior and senior undergraduates. The twenty students who completed applications came from sixteen different towns on Cape Cod and the Islands, and from ten different colleges and universities. Eleven of the applicants are students at the University of Massachusetts graduate and undergraduate schools.

The winners of this year’s scholarship awards are: Keli Ann Gates, Katherine Terkanian, and Jarrod Fowler. All three will be with us at our annual meeting and luncheon on June 8 th. Please introduce yourselves and get to know these talented young people who represent a bright future for our environment.

Keli Ann Gates is majoring in Environmental Policy as a graduate student in the Master of Public Policy program at University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. She believes it extremely important for decision makers to consider the actual cost value of natural capital which includes wetlands, forests, and open spaces. Keli would establish a Numerical Value System data base for the state’s resources. An example, wetlands may have a value of $4 million annually because of the service they provide the environment. Her grade point average is 3.286.

Katherine Terkanian is a Master of Science graduate student in the Department of Environmental Conservation at University of Massachusetts, Amherst, with a focus on the ecology and genetics of horseshoe crabs on Cape Cod. Horseshoe crabs are commercially and ecologically important and, perhaps as a result of overharvesting, are in severe decline. Her study will help define what the scale of management should be and will point to important habitats to protect for future spawning. Katherine is currently the project manager for Atlantic crab research at Massachusetts Audubon Society’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, and oversees 75 volunteers working at eight locations across Cape Cod as. Her grade point average is 4.0.

Jarrod Fowler is working for an undergraduate degree in Horticulture Science, at University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He plans to apply the principles of biological pest control to problematical systems to address current challenges facing the region. He plans to foster sound horticulture practices for towns, businesses, and homeowners. His example is the invasive pest, the Winter Moth, which has damaged and defoliated ornamental plants of Cape Cod. Jarrod will be assisting a professor, who is a biological control specialist, to introduce and establish a parasitic fly to control Winter Moth infestation. His grade point average is 3.90

I would like to thank the scholarship committee for their great work throughout the year, and special thanks to Mary Ellen Bower for all she did to publicize the scholarships and attract so many well-qualified applicants. A New York Times article on April 11th entitled “Burden of College Loans on Graduates Grows” begins by staying, ”Student loan debt outpaced credit card debt for the first time last year...” As Nauset Garden Club members we can be proud to know that we are doing our part to help ease the problem.

WEB SITE – Carol Alper

Our club’s web site is a work-in-progress, with Terry Machie doing the updating for us.  Any suggestions for adding to the website or making it more user-friendly should be sent to Mary Ellen Sussman, who will be working with Terry on the site over the summer.

Also, Peg Sheehan has created a club account on Shutterfly.com, where we can post photos of club events, so they will be available to be viewed by the entire club.   Type in the website’s name: www.nausetgardenclub.shutterfly.com, then type in our password:

flowers.  Peg has already posted many club photos on the site, and asks that other members add their own photos of club events for all to share. Thanks, Peg, for making this available very useful service available to the club.

CONGRATULATIONS TO IRENE MITCHELL!Each year the “Florabunda Award” is presented by the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts to one individual in each of the GCFM”s member clubs. This year our club nominated Irene Mitchell for the Florabunda Award. Irene is a member of long-standing with our club, who has taught us all so much about floral design, through workshops and with her gentle manner while judging our design entries each month. She is always a willing volunteer for our special events and programs, and is a very pleasant person to be around. We congratulate Irene Mitchell, our 2011 Florabunda Award recipient.
