NAVAN NOTABLESMcFadden Family and Cecilbay FarmEileen vaillancourt, youngest daughter of Charles and Annie McFadden, opened the family history with this little rhyme. “We’re a Family, and we’re a tree,Our roots go deep down in history! From my great great Grandpa reaching up to meWe’re a green and growing family”

After perusing this historical document, one realizes the many McFaddens that made Navan their home. Basil and Doreen McFadden bought the farm from Charles and Annie McFadden. Basil also bought a red tractor, a plough, a disc for $2000.00! Pretty good deal even in the 1950’s! They took over the farm in 1957. One of their children, continued in farming the land.

gord and Lucy McFadden, married in 1984, were the next generation to work the farm. Just recently, Lucy and gord built a house across from the farm on Trim Road, and is semi-retired from farming. Their two sons, Travis and Devyn, run it now. It’s a dairy farm. Their 70 cows are milked twice a day. As we all know there is a lot of work in running a farm. Milking, cropping, haying, tending to livestock, fencing, keeping the machinery in good working order. Then there is the house to look after, meals to prepare for family and workers, gardens to plant and weed. Children, as soon as they’re old enough, help out with chores. Farm chores promote a good work ethic in them. I think it’s wonderful that a family can keep farming in their family. My father came from a farm in Cumberland. Two of his brothers remained in farming. But none of the children from the 8 brothers and sisters have remained on the farm! It’s a busy hard working life a farmer chooses. Hats off to the McFaddens!! And if you ate today thank a farmer!

COMMUNITY SAFETY ZONEWelcome to June’s Community Safety Zone! With summer just around the corner, this month’s column will focus on water safety at the pool. Several Navan residents have backyard pools to cool off during the warm summer weather. Following a few water safety rules, even in our own backyard pool, can greatly reduce the risk of injuries and drowning. Here are some general rules :

Take swimming lessonsThis may seem obvious but many people overestimate their strength, stamina and skill level who it comes to swimming. Ensuring you and your children are equipped with the right training and experience to know your capabilities and when to call it quits for the day is essential.

Watch children at all timesBackyard pools are, in fact, one of the most likely places for children under 5 yrs of age to drown. According to the Lifesaver Society, while 61% of drowning deaths for children 5 and under involved them being alone near water, 53% of these deaths occurred during a momentary absence or lapse of a caregiver’s attention. Many people assume they would hear shouting or splashing when a drowning begins but unfortunately many are completely silent.Be sure to keep watch on young children.

Learn CPR and First AidWhen it comes to your own personal pool, the lifeguard on duty is you. Knowing how to perform simple first aid and CPR on children and adults using your pool could save lives. It is also a great idea to have another person in your home trained in these skills in the event they need to assist you !

Equip your pool with safety devicesFor poolside emergencies or injuries, have a first aid kit, flotation devices and a phone close by at all times. Having gates and or ladders that lock and prevent access to the pool area helps with safety.

Enforce family “pool rules” Create a checklist for the whole family to follow when they’re using the pool. Some rules to consider include:

•No running, diving or rough housing near the pool•No swimming alone•No glass or sharp breakable objects in the pool area

Make sure everyone is on board and follows the rules your family comes up with together. Also, remind your child to stay away from ditches, creeks, rivers and lakes. During Spring and Fall, water levels can be be higher than usual and are often accompanied by soft, slippery banks that are treacherous, particularly for younger children.

We appreciate hearing your comments, receiving your concerns and taking suggestions for future Community Safety Zone topics. Please feel free to email us at [email protected]

At the time of the last report we were preparing for the Ham dinner /Murder Mystery on the 27th April. We were very pleased with the success of this event. We had a sellout crowd and people enjoyed the food and seemed to have a great time. Particularly challenging all evening was the threat of a power cut – it hung over us like the Sword of Damocles (see below for comments on theatre). The threat level changed throughout the evening but the final word from Hydro was that there would be no cut in or area. Then the power went out from 7pm till 8pm. Fortunately Lion Fred Hyde had his generator ready to go and there was good emergency lighting in the Curling Club. Furthermore all the food had been served by 7pm - so the cut caused little difficulty and if anything improved the atmosphere. “Professor Plum’s second murder mystery” went off without a hitch – and the cast – especially Alan White, Shena Hyde, Juanita vetter, Joanne Maika White and Katherine vanderploeg portrayed their characters very well much to the amusement of the crowd. I, as before, was the absent minded Professor Plum. Congratulations to the winning table – who won chocolates and two original paintings by children attending the Ottawa Children’s Treatment Centre – one of our favourite charities. Also on the same evening we were delighted to present a Herb Deavy bursary to Takara O’Donoughue. Takara was a particularly worthy recipient as she has volunteered to help at so many Lions functions- including many dinnersTheatrical events were much on our mind these past few weeks as at our last supper meeting we had a presentation from victor Lachance of vintage Stock Theatre. This theatre group is fundraising for a utility trailer to haul their portable stage – this will improve their ability to perform in more places in the region. The Navan Lions Club is very supportive of the idea of bringing live theatre to the Navan area, so we hope to be able to help in their quest to find a trailer for moving the stage.

Finally I must mention the Relay For Life – held by Cairine Wilson High School in the Navan Fairgrounds on the 11th May. Navan Lions supports this event by feeding the hungry students hamburgers and hot hogs. This year the students raised $93,000.00 for the Canadian Cancer Society. This is an astonishing achievement and we congratulate them.

Thank you allMany thanks to all the friends and neighbors who participated in Catherine’s recent Celebration of Life. It truly was the party she wanted.

I am sorry if I did not speak with you directly at the event; it was simply a matter of so many people, too little time. Thanks also to the St. Mary’s A.C.W. who provided and served the refreshment. It turned out to be an ideal weather day for Catherine’s request to include an ice cream sundae bar. Thanks must also go to Rachel grattan who so insightfully and skillfully led us through the Ceremony and to those who shared their stories about Catherine. The biggest thanks must go to Catherine, herself, for not only for planning the Celebration of Her Life before she passed away, but more for having sharing her life with us and in particular, me.Fred Hyde

Well it was another active month for the Navan Nifty 50plus Seniors Club. On Tuesday May 1st a group of the Nifty 50 members went to The Upper Canada Theatrein Morrisburg where they enjoyed a wonderfull production of “The grand Ol Opry” a musical tour of generations of Opry performers. Thanks to Betty Johnston for organizing this great outing. The first Wednesday of the month luncheon was catered by the Navan Women’s Institute and was enjoyed by a large crowd of members and friends. As usual there was a large birthday cake to celebrate the members having a birthday in May.On May 9th the members were treated to “a tribute to mothers” with a Mother’s Day Fun vintage Apron Fashion Show. This included in partaking of a specialtable of vintage treats such as rolled cucumber sandwiches, fluffy pastries, and an array of other tasty snacks. Thanks to Juanita and her crew for arranging the event and to all participants who in addition to modelling the aprons provided everyone with a few laughs along the way.

If you would like to join the Nifty 50plus Seniors group the requirements are simple! IF YOU HAvE reached your 50th birthday you are welcome to join. The group meets every week from the first Wednesday in September to the last Wednesday in June upstairs in the Navan Memorial Arena from 12:30PM to 4:30PM. Your Nifty 50plus Committee

The Bobolink and Baltimore OrioleArticle David grattan and Photos by Tom Devecseri

For the last two evenings we have seen Bobolinks and Baltimore orioles on the old rail line. The Bobolink is perhaps one of the lesser known birds found in this region. In fact we are near the northern limit of the summer – breeding range. The Bobolink is a small member of the blackbird family with an absolutely stunning song. We heard it very clearly tonight. It has been described as being dressed like a man in evening dress on back to front. Indeed the breast is black and there are white/ tan markings on the back. The top of the head is pale yellow – it is a very distinctive cap. Unfortunately they are a threatened species – which means they are likely to become endangered. They like to breed in open fields with long grass and are often killed when hayfields are cut. In addition in South America where it winters – it is regarded as a serious pest to grain crops and has been killed in large numbers. And yet it is a beautiful and interesting little bird. It is hard to imagine a more beautifully coloured bird than the Baltimore Oriole. Perhaps what is less well known is that it was not named after the city of Baltimore – but after the bold orange and black colour in the coat of arms of the Baltimore baronetcy. The Baltimore title was granted in 1625 to Sir george Calvert, and was held by six generations of his family, who were proprietors of the Avalon in Newfoundland and the colony of Maryland. If you have visited Newfoundland you may well have visited Ferryland in the Avalon peninsula, a settlement founded by Lord Balti-more. The oriole likes open woodland and has been declining steadily for the last 30 years. It is not yet a threatened species.
