Meet The Maestro Fast Facts

Meet The Maestro

Major: Mechanical

Engineering

Year: Sophomore

Hometown: Centerville, Ohio

Joe plays about 50 different

instruments!

Who's Got Spirit?

Meet Joe, Purdue's fun-loving

fanatic.  Since his arrival on campus

Joe has been spreading his

enthusiasm and positivity

everywhere he goes.  Joe is a

creative and passionate individual.

As a mechanical engineering

student, Joe creativity is put to the

test daily.  Although, Joe doesn't

stop when his homework is done.

Two of Joe's greatest works have

been building replicas of Purdue's

iconic "World's Largest Drum" as a

costume and the Purdue "Xtra

Special" as a bike powered train

shown to the side.  Recently,

Purdue's official social media pages

have released a video of Joe

building the Xtra Special and it has

been watched over 10,000 times

across all platforms, making Joe

practically a school superstar!

Leadership in C Minor Shreve Hall Club RHA Senator

As a Freshman walking onto

campus, Joe decided to join Shreve

Hall Club. He walked into the

election meeting dressed in a full suit

with tons of confidence.  No one

else in the meeting was dressed up

at all, but this is the Joe way to

always give 100% to everything he

does.  He won his election and his

RHA journey began.  Representing

Shreve at RHA meetings came

naturally to Joe.  He was always the

most vocal Senator, often times

guiding conversation when others

went silent. Joe was an driving

member of RHA's advocacy

committee.  His contributions  to the

2017-2018 senate were one of the

reasons that RHA was able to grow

as an organization.

RHA Administrator

Joe decided to run for the

executive board position of

Administrator for the 2018-2019

school year.  The Administrator is

a combination of the traditional

positions of secretary  and

treasurer.  Joe is thriving in this

position.  So far he has helped

RHA to become more

transparent with it's finances and

he has taken very clear and

detailed meeting minutes.

More Cowbell Dining Advisory Board

Throughout the past year, Joe

has been an active member of

the dining advisory board.  Joe

has taken the opportunity to be

a part of this group very seriously,

often asking his friends for

feedback to be able to better

represent student concerns to

the dining administration.

Orchestra

Joe is proud member of the

Orchestra at Purdue.  He is a

percussionist. Joe loves

music and even keeps a

piano in his room! As a

member he performs in

many different events

including the Christmas

Show and Commencement.

BGR Team Leader

Boiler Gold Rush (BGR) is

Purdue's student orientation

program.  This year

approximately 7000 freshman

attended BGR.  Joe played

an integral role in BGR by

being a team leader (TL).  As

a TL Joe was in charge of

approximately 20 students.

He served as a mentor and

guide to these new

Boilermakers.

Critic's Review To the GLACURH RBD, NCCs, and NRHH CCs,

It is my honor to write a letter recommending for Joe Navarra for the title of

GLACURH Student of the Year. I first met Joe a few days after he stepped

on campus last year as a freshman.  Since then, I have had the privilege of

watching him grow as a leader and working beside him to make our

campus a better place for people to live.  Joe is a hard worker and has

been up to a lot this year. I could not possibly fit all the ways that he has

impacted this campus in this one letter.

As a first year student, Joe was an integral part of his hall club. He helped to

put on several hall events.  At the same time, Joe was working hard as a

RHA Senator.  At Senate meetings, Joe would often times take his own

notes.  Using his notes, he would discuss RHA with his floor and solicit their

feedback and come back to RHA with new perspectives from his

community.  In this way, Joe was a model RHA Senator.  This is the kind of

commitment that you cannot find in just anyone.

To me, the most impressive contribution that Joe made last year was his

work centered around dining.  Here at Purdue, dining is a hot topic.  Our

campus is growing, with residential living numbers up, dining has been

brainstorming how to keep up with this growth.  As a first year student, Joe

didn't know how dining used to be, but he listened closely to

upperclassmen talk about dining and became very passionate about

helping out.  Joe attended almost every dining advisory board meeting of

the year.  He was an active participant and did a lot of research and

outreach to help dining.  Although he may not personally recognize it, his

dedication has help dining tremendously.

When the end of the year came and it was time to pass out the NACURH

Bronze Pins, with all the contributions and passion that Joe brought

throughout the year, he was more than deserving of what the pin

represents.  Joe is a fearless leader and I was very proud to present him with

the Bronze Pin.

Nearing the end of my Presidential term, one of my biggest fears was what

would RHA become after I am gone. I love RHA with all my heart and letting

go of it was very hard, but knowing that Joe is there to take care of RHA

made letting go easier.  RHA will continue to grow strong and supportive

under Joe's leadership.  In the short time that I have know Joe he has been

an outstanding leader.  It is for that reason and many more that I am

privileged to nominate Joe for Student of the Year. He is more than

deserving of the title.

Thank you for your consideration,

Aimee Cooper

2016-2018 RHA President

Critic's Review To the GLACURH Regional Board of Directors,

It is my honor and privilege to write this letter of nomination for Joe Navarra for

GLACURH student of the year. I have had the opportunity to work closely with

Joe and can speak to his love of Purdue, his desire to learn more about

leadership, and his commitment to his own growth and development.

Coming in as a first year student, Joe took a leap and decided to join his hall

club executive board as RHA Senator. Within his exec role capacity, Joe worked

closely with other members of Shreve club to implement hall club programs and

to put on the largest hall club event on the Purdue campus, the Shreve semi-

formal. He was always counted on a consistent worker that would take on tasks

and complete them without hesitation and well before expectations were

placed upon him.

Within the Residence Hall Association, Joe became one of the “go-to” senators

to draft legislation, to educate other senators on parliamentary procedure and

to get the conversation moving with important legislation when the room was

quiet. He took great care and concern in his role as RHA senator and drafted

more than five pieces of legislation, ranging from policy alternatives to funding

requests. He was also a consistent advocate of RHA to both his hall and his

peers. He was able to find the positives in every situation and worked to create

an atmosphere of respect and professionalism within RHA senate meetings.

Joe made the decision to further develop as a leader when he stepped into the

RHA administrator role in April 2018. In this role, Joe has worked to develop more

consistent and developed minutes from meetings, as well as provide

transparency to the senators of how RHA spends their time and fiscal resources.

He is a valuable member of the executive board that takes it upon himself to

ask the difficult questions, remind others of their responsibilities and find ways to

keep RHA relevant and moving forward.

An admirable aspect of Joe is his love and passion for Purdue. When he had the

opportunity to represent Purdue at NACURH 2018, he jumped at the

opportunity. In addition, he shows his pride in a variety of ways, including

recently being featured by the Mechanical Engineering department for his

creation of bike powered “Boilermaker Special”, the Purdue mascot. Joe is an

active student leader within University Residence, as well as a diligent and

studious learner. He is currently in good standing with the institution and has

learned the value of learning both inside and out of the classroom. Joe has

given so much to Purdue student leadership during his short time at the

institution and I am truly excited to watch his growth over the next few years. He

is exceptionally deserving of the GLACURH Student of the Year award.

Thank you for your consideration,
