Navigation Advanced for Mates and Masters Extreme Weather and Navigation

Figure 7.1 - Barograph Copy

Dangerous semicircle: This lies on the side of the path towards the usual direction of re-curvature, i.e. to the right hand semicircle in the N and the left hand in the S (away from the equator before re-curvature and towards the equator after re- curvature). It is called 'dangerous' because:

If a ship is lying towards that side and forward of trough line, the storm will close in very rapidly with the normal movement of the storm

Wind will tend to blow the ship toward the path and closer to the centre of the storm

Re-curvature will decrease the distance from the centre.

Dangerous quadrant The advance quadrant of the dangerous semi-circle is known as the dangerous quadrant, as it lies ahead of the centre. The three reasons listed for the dangerous semi-circle apply more strongly to this sector of the storm.

Navigable semicircle: This lies on the left hand side of the path in the N and the right hand side in the S (towards the equator before re-curvature and away from equator after re-curvature). A ship situated in this semi-circle will tend to be pushed behind the centre and the re-curvature of the storm wiH increase the distance from the centre.

Figure 12.26 - Man Overboard

time = A-6

The ship should be turned around using a Scharnov Turn, as it is a delayed action and the distance lost would be less when compared to a Williamson's Turn. Once the ship losing the person has conducted an up and down search to the position at the time of the last known sighting of the person overboard, allowing for drift, it should resume its voyage. If the person is not found, the next port authorities will have to be notified. The Company should also be advised to provide a replacement at the next port. If the search is unsuccessful, the CRS should be advised to transmit URGENCY messages to shipping in the area advising a sharp lookout for a person in the water and to report sighting and effect rescue.

12.9.2 In Port -

All of the manoeuvres described above are relevant, but instead of turning hard over and commencing a Williamson's Turn, speed should be reduced and a rescue boat launched in addition to calling the port authority. If a person falls overboard during mooring operations, a port tug or mooring boat should be called to recover the person from the water.

12.9.3 Man Overboard Manoeuvres

12.9.3.1 Williamson's Turn This is used as an 'immediate action manoeuvre' just after a person has fallen overboard:

Helm immediately hard over to the side on which the person fell. This has the advantage of pushing the stem away from the person in the water

When the ship has turned 60° off original heading, the helm should be shifted hard over to the other side. (Note: The helm does not have to be shifted 60° for every ship. Masters should determine such helm angle during drills or other practice manoeuvres)

When ship's heading is 20° short of the reciprocal heading, order helm amidships and steady up the ship on the reciprocal course. At the same time, speed reductiot~ should be advised. (By this time, the ship would have lost a significant amount of its speed due to the turn. If propeller revolutions are not reduced, the ship would gain speed on a steady heading)

At the final stages, the ship can be manoeuvred easily to create lee for person in water

TABLE I -FOR LATINOE

Table I is for interpolating the LMTofsunris, twilight, moonrice etc. for latitude. It isto be entered, in the appmprlate column on the len, ~ 8 t h the difference between true latitude and the nearest tsbuiar lat'lude which IS less than the true latlude; and w~th the argument at the top which is the nearest value of the dnerence between the times h r the tabular iatitude and Ihe nen hgher one, the correction sl obtained is applied to the tlme for the tabular latitude: the sign of the mnection can be seen by ~nspect~on. 11 ista be noted that the interpolaton 1s not linear, s t h a t when using thistable it is essential to take outthe tsbuiai phenomenon for the lattude l ea than the true lat'nude.
