If you are in-terested in serving on the committee, Laurel is eager to hear from you. And thank you Laurel!

CAROLYN NIELSEN LIBRARY UPDATE After many years in the Charlotte Street Arts Centre, the Carolyn Nielsen Library is moving to a new location. Negotiations are underway to find a new space, and we hope to announce its new home in September. The NBCF is in need of updating its storage furniture, and we hope to replace many our filing cabinets with bookshelves, which will al-low us to better use our new space. If you have bookshelves or similar storage units to donate, please contact the NBCF office.

NEW BRUNSWICK YOUTH CHOIR 2017 21 of New Brunswick’s best young singers gathered at Mount Allison University May 5-7

for the 2017 Edition of the New Brunswick Youth Choir. A weekend of hard work brought the all-Cana-dian repertoire to readiness. Under the leader-ship of Dr. Marta McCarthy of the University of Guelph, the singers were introduced to some of the best music Canadian composers and arrangers have to offer. The NBYC is a chance to learn not only musicality, deeply exploring both the emotional and technical aspects of the repertoire, but also how to work well as a choral coach and director, choosing repertoire and leading rehearsals, lessons which will prove valuable in their future musical lives. It is a joy to watch the intensive rehearsal process, and to observe old friendships re-newed, new friendships formed, and peers working with their peers from all across New Brunswick.

NBCF NEWSLETTER AUG. 2017

The choir was ably assisted by rehearsal pianist Dakota Scott-Digout. Dakota had graduated, the week before rehearsal started, from Mount Allison with a Bachelor of Music and will be pursuing a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance at l'Université de Montréal this fall. A sensitive and accomplished pianist and accompanist, and he is one to watch. The whole NBYC concert is always wonderful to experience, but highlights this year were Fire by young Canadian composer Katerina Gimon, Parlez-Moi by France Levasseur-Ouimet and arranged by Allan Bevan and Mo-juba, a Yoruban folk song wonderfully arranged by Brian Tate. A rollicking version of

Ruth Watson Henderson’s classic Les Raftsmen was a particular treat. The NBYC only happens thanks to the gener-ous financial support and volunteer efforts of many choirs, institutions and individuals, the many voice teachers and choir directors who take the time and effort to recommend and coach their singers, and the many parents and friends who support our singers’ love of music. NBYC 2018 will be held May 3-6, 2018 at the Département de Musique, Université de Monc-ton. Audition information for the 2018 New Brunswick Youth Choir and the 2018 National Youth Choir in Newfoundland will be released in September. Watch for news!

NBCF NEWSLETTER AUG. 2017MEMBER NEWS

FREDERICTON LADIES CHOIR NAMES NEW MUSIC LEADERSHIP TEAM The Fredericton Ladies Choir announces the appointment of a new director and a new ac-companist following the retirement of former director Peter Steeves and accompanist Julie Maston in the spring. Sally Dibblee has accepted the position of choir director. Sally has enjoyed 20+ years per-forming in opera and concert houses through-out North America. She has also been a vocal instructor privately and at Mount Allison Uni-versity and serves as adjudicator at music festi-vals across the country. After spending 2-4 months on the road every year, she now wants to spend more time in her studio at home in Fredericton where she lives with her husband and two sons. The choir’s new accompanist is Nadine Martin, who moved to Fredericton two years ago after spending 10 years in Halifax. She was collabo-rative pianist at her alma mater Dalhousie Uni-versity and accompanist for Gilbert and Sulli-

van Society. Nadine has been an accompanist since age 11 when she played for and directed the choir at her small church on Prince Edward Island. She has competed and accompanied regionally, provincially, nationally, and interna-tionally winning numerous awards. She was a Young Artist for two seasons at Scotia Festival of Music. The choir will return to rehearsal in September. The tentative date for the choir’s annual Christmas concert is December 10; further de-tails will be announced in the fall.

150 VOICES FOR 150 YEARS The Perth Andover Community Choir under Marianne Tiessen Bell and a host of volunteers held this large community choral celebration of Canada’s 150th on July 1 in Perth Andover.
