And the restaurants? There are many great restaurants in Philadelphia—many of them just a few minutes walk away from the hotel.
Across Locust Street from the hotel are Varalli (Italian, on the ground floor) and Perch Pub (pub fare, upstairs). Considered the best vegan restaurant in the country, Vedge is just a block and a half down Locust Street. Across Broad Street is the Tavern on Broad in the basement of the Bellevue—as well as a food court for lower-priced options.
Some of the best burgers (and beers) in the city can be found at the Good Dog Bar on 15th Street between Locust and Walnut. On that same block, you can also find Max Brenner—Chocolate by the Bald Man, and Shiroi Hana for sushi and other Japanese favorites.

ASTROLOGICALLY COPING WITH DISABILITY AND ILLNESS ARIA AB
linda Furiate
As a person who was diagnosed with a non-curable movement disorder, knowing my astrology has literally saved my sanity. How is it that some people cope better than others with a life long disability or illness and others are prone to a life of depression or resentment? In this lecture, I will review the charts of people like Michael J. Fox, Chris Reeves and many others to determine what gave them the perseverance to transcend their medical condition.
uSING VEDIC ASTROLOGY TO FIND THE LIFE’S PuRPOSE ASSEMBlY C
Timon Harewood
Mankind has been forever searching for the concrete meaning to their personal existence or the will to a meaningful existence, e.g. , Why am I here? What is the purpose for my life? The Vedic birth chart can assist in this quest. We shall examine the Vedic chart by looking at the “four pillars” of this chart to establish a psychological profile.
OuTTA CONTROL OR HAVING FuN? HOW OuT OF BOuNDS PLANETS WORK CoNCERTo AB
Marie Gross
The Sun moves through the sky within the invisible boundaries of the ecliptic, never varying more than 23°28” North or South of the celestial equator. Yet other planets—particularly the Moon, Mercury, Venus, and Mars—may travel beyond these parameters. This discussion will address what it means when a planet is moving “out of bounds” and what significance it may have in a native’s chart.
PREDICTING THE NExT PRESIDENT: THE ARIES INGRESS METHOD MAESTRo AB
Nina Gryphon
Nina teaches you how to determine the winning Presidential candidate, using the secrets of the ancient Arabic astrologers. The Aries Ingress method has reliably determined the winning political party in U.S. Presidential elections since at least 1880. You will learn this simple method of political astrology and apply it to other astrological inquiries.
CHIRON—JOuRNEY TO YOuR HEART CENTER oRCHESTRA
Gali livneh
Chiron is one of the great healers in our charts. It has the power to connect different realms and bridge worlds, yet there is something else that is needed on the way—to sacrifice something. In the lecture we will talk about the connection of Chiron to the heart chakra and how we can work with its placement in the chart to reach a balanced heart center.
Everything under the Sun: The Art of Astrology 15
Friday, August 16, 2–3:15 pm • Session 1 Lectures
FINANCIAL ASTROLOGY & THE MARKET TODAY (2013) ARIA AB
Arch Crawford
Arch will speak on the development of financial astrology and comment on current alignments and their probable timing of events in stock markets, currency and commodity markets and geopolitical events. He will have a number of critical charts available and will show those for which there are questions and current interest, mostly relative to General Stock Market Timing, Gold, Bonds, US Dollar and Oil.
PRINCIPLES OF ELECTIONAL ASTROLOGY CoNCERTo AB
Monica Escalante-ochoa
Success or failure of a new activity, association or event depends mainly on the time when it is started. Luckily, electional astrology exists to help us to find the most favorable (or sometimes the least unfavorable) time to attain success in important events such as getting married, opening a business, medical procedures, starting a trip, etc. Electional astrology has different rules than natal astrology and here we will learn them in theory and in practice.
ASTRO*CARTO*GRAPHY AND YOuR HEART ASSEMBlY C
Ken Irving
Changing your life by changing your location is easy, but doing it right—not so much, especially when a move affects the romantic relationship in your life. Good love in one place can turn into bad love (or no love at all) in another. Real-life examples reviewed of people who found love in one place and lost it in another, and vice versa, leading to insights you can apply in your own life.
ASTROLOGY IN 3D MAESTRo AB
Barry orr
The world is not flat, and neither is your chart. This workshop will focus on understanding the astronomical reality underlying the horoscope. We will cover, as painlessly as possible, some basic astronomy for astrologers. Slides and planetarium software will be used to help you visualize what a chart looks like in the actual sky. The practical applications of this information in everyday chart work will be described.
DECLINATION’S CuTTING-EDGE TECHNIquES oRCHESTRA
leigh Westin
Dramatically expand your craft with the other dimension’s cutting-edge techniques. Friday, August 16, 3:45–5 pm • Session 2 Lectures
WESTERN SIDEREAL ASTROLOGY CoNCERTo AB
Ken Bowser
Western sidereal astrology is based upon the Babylonian sidereal zodiac, the original zodiac. The Babylonians discovered the zodiac and produced the first mathematical model of the sky that could accurately predict future positions of the planets. In 1944, after examining ancient astronomical materials from the Near East, Cyril Fagan, an Irish astrological scholar, introduced the Babylonian sidereal zodiac to the West. This lecture will provide an overview of the history and rationale of western sidereal astrology.
WHAT ASTROLOGY SAYS ABOuT RELATIONSHIPS AND MARRIAGE oRCHESTRA
Alphee lavoie
This lecture explores planetary configurations between two people that move them towards marriage. The research employed the predictive techniques of transits, secondary progressions, solar arcs and lunar and solar returns. From my extensive research based on factual astrological criteria between a couple, I will show you what brings two people together to say “I do through sickness and health till death do us part.”
CONSTELLATIONAL ASTROLOGY, STARS OF POWER MAESTRo AB
Joe Polise
The subject of this lecture brings us back to the root of our discipline: constellations and fixed stars and the part they play in horoscope interpretation. In this talk we will explore the stars and constellations from a few vantage points. These include a synopsis of the history and philosophy of fixed stars as an astrological technique and practical applications of traditional stars and constellations. Individual horoscopes and event charts will be presented to illustrate.
THuND’ROuS PORTENTS! ASTROLOGICAL FORECASTING AND THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR IN 1860s ARIA AB
Christopher Renstrom
Luke Dennis Broughton began publishing Broughton’s Monthly Planet Reader and Astrological Journal on April 1, 1860 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was America’s first astrological magazine. The magazine’s run coincided with the American Civil War. Much of the material concerns war predictions as well as the horoscopes of notable figures like Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant. By cataloguing Broughton’s successful predictions (and errors) this lecture shows how astrology was practiced during America’s most dramatic crisis.
uRANIAN ASTROLOGY FOR BEGINNERS ASSEMBlY C
liane Thomas Wade
A simple explanation of the use of the 90 and 360 degree dials and planetary pictures used in the Uranian System of Astrology. We will review the eight transneptunian points used by Uranian astrologers. A simple ephemeris of the points will be given to attendees as well as a sample 90 degree dial. RECEPTION: MY HOuSE, MY RuLES MAESTRo AB
Rhyan Butler
Reception is an important classical consideration that is often overlooked in astrology today. This talk covers the way a planet treats other planets in its dignities and what kind of effects that relationship has on a planet who happens to be in the sign of another. We’ll explore definitions and techniques that are based on these relationships between the planets such as mixed reception, negative reception, and the implications these have on horary and natal chart techniques.
AMERICAN ZODIAC ART ARIA AB
Kenneth McGhee
We know the zodiac and its symbols well—but how often do we see it in art, specifically in public buildings and spaces? More often than not, you will see in this lecture. First, covering the many zodiacs in Washington D.C. area, we will then explore locations throughout the U.S. where public zodiac art appears to the enlightenment of all. See over 100 zodiac photos I have collected from public spaces.
THE OuTER PLANETS IN THE FIRST HOuSE CoNCERTo AB
leslie McGuirk
An outer planet in the first house is one of the strongest indicators of a personality type. These people are always wired for intensity. Neptune, Uranus or Pluto each gives a different type of flavoring to the individual’s core way of being. It is always a powerful force, and one that needs to be listened to with skillful attention so that it becomes a wonderful asset, as opposed to a controlling negative influence.
THE PINBALL APPROACH TO A CHART oRCHESTRA
Anne ortelee
The Pinball Approach is a unique way to approach a chart as an energetic bundle of planetary relationships. It combines Horary, Uranian, Jyotish and Western techniques, and focuses on how the energy of transits stimulates planets sequentially in a horoscope. It is a holistic approach to charts as energy systems and locates difficult or challenging aspects to obtain a clear idea of when the energy will block, complete or peak.
WHAT IS ASTROLOGY? IS ALL ASTROLOGY PSYCHOLOGICAL? ASSEMBlY C
Gaia Somasca
This lecture focuses on how astrology, as a practice and a symbolic language, has retained its legacy through millennia while discussing the debated question on the relation between astrology and psyche. We will explore charts and their interpretations by the Babylonians, Renaissance man Marsilio Ficino, William Lilly and contemporary astrologers while reflecting on astrological symbols, astrologers and what psychological astrology is in Western culture.
Everything under the Sun: The Art of Astrology 19
Saturday, August 17, 9–10:15 am • Session 3 Lectures
THE SEVEN CONDITIONS OF AFFLICTION AND BONIFICATION CoNCERTo AB
Chris Brennan
Although the term “affliction” is sometimes used in contemporary discussions to refer to some generic notion of a planet being poorly placed in a chart, recent research has shown that the concept of affliction originally referred to seven very specific planetary conditions when the term was first defined around the 1st century BCE. During this talk we will explore these seven conditions of affliction as well as a corresponding set of positive conditions for “bonification.”
GETTING TO THE HEART OF YOuR CHART: A GuIDE TO HOROSCOPE SYNTHESIS oRCHESTRA
Frank Clifford
When looking at a birth chart, where do we begin? How do we assess what’s most important? How do we spot themes without getting lost in too much detail? Frank will introduce a reliable method that pinpoints the key areas and dynamics of any horoscope. He’ll also show that when people “speak their charts,” we astrologers collect gems that help to fine-tune our astrological vocabulary and capture the essence of a planetary placement.
FORECASTING: THE POWER OF SYMMETRICAL ASTROLOGY ASSEMBlY C
Madalyn Hillis-Dineen
Whether you want to determine the general trends for a year or focus in on daily transits, the tools of symmetrical astrology will add a powerful component to your astrological work. THE FOuRTH HOuSE: OuR GRAVE OR TREASuRE MAESTRo AB
Baris Ilhan
The fourth house is the house of family, home, parents, roots, ancestors and homeland, but traditionally it also represents the hidden things, treasures, endings and graves. This is the darkest part of our chart. At this lecture we will see how this house can be our grave in a symbolical and psychological sense and how we can turn it into a treasure by working on the issues that are indicated by the sign there.
THE ECONOMY, INFLATION/DEFLATION AND MCWHIRTER CYCLES ARIA AB

THE WHAT & WHY OF SYMMETRICAL ASTROLOGY ASSEMBlY C
Gary Christen
Symmetry’s theme of astrology was expressed by the Greeks and modernized by Europeans such as Alfred Witte and Americans such as A.H. Blackwell. It brings the basic views of the Babylonians. Rob Hand gives it a philosophic relevance for the future impact of the entire field of astrology. Symmetrical astrology distills various twentieth-century schools of astrology into a single body of thought, adds revolutionary philosophical underpinnings, brings anew ancient overlooked concepts, adds modern developments and provides practical directions that will enrich astrology’s future for all of us.

Eight has strong astrological significance for understanding life cycles, eternal cycles of eight—birth, emergence, commitment, growth, fulfillment, sharing, change, decline, death—then rebirth. This presentation explores the symbolism of Scorpio, house 8, the cycle of eight challenging aspects (conjunction, semi-squares, squares, opposition) and major cycles of eight through which we can study the flow of any lifetime: transiting Saturn through houses and the progressed lunar phases.
FERAL PLANETS: WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE oRCHESTRA

THE DEATH CHART MAESTRo AB
Maurice Fernandez
The time and place of birth is understood to have paramount importance, describing one’s path of life. The same goes for the time and place of death: the death chart describes what has been worked on in the course of the person’s life and provides clear indications of the direction the soul is taking upon departure from this incarnation. A fascinating study with example charts, including the study of two incarnations of the same soul.

This workshop will introduce the fundamentals of traditional horary and get you started with the tools you need to: • frame the question • get the gist of the chart • identify and evaluate significators • uncover the story behind the question • find the answer.
FINDING THE STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES IN A HOROSCOPE ASSEMBlY C
Arlene Nimark
Why do some people persevere in the face of adversity, while others wear a placard with “Victim” stamped on its front in big bold letters? With the use of the 360- and 90-degree dial and planetary pictures, we will be able to explore the depths of a chart. We will also see when the progressed Sun, Moon and Midheaven, along with solar arcs and transits can ignite to release one’s power.
THE RINGS OF SATuRN: SETTING OuR BOuNDARIES oRCHESTRA
Shirley Soffer
Saturn typically shows us our limitations—but what about our strengths? Saturn can actually bring out the very best in us. Although its forbidding presence can conjure up feelings of frustration, and foreboding, Saturn’s compensatory energies can also help us develop the capacity to excel. As we take Saturn through the signs and houses, we’ll show how Saturn’s protective, ego-defending effects can often turn insecurity into self-mastery.

88 CONSTELLATIONS CONDENSED INTO 12 oRCHESTRA
Wendy Ashley
Every constellation has a story to tell. Wendy guides us into motifs animated by the constellations from which we glean the meaning and qualities attributed to the signs of the zodiac: the 12. By understanding that astrological perceptions were once much richer and more accurate than their modern reduction, and by learning about non-zodiacal constellations, we are inspired to re-integrate these stories into our readings.
ASTROLOGY AND MAGICK MAESTRo AB
Janet Berres
Astrology and Magick have been linked together since the beginning of time. It is no surprise then, that Aleister Crowley (1875–1947), the most famous occultist of the 20th century, was also a skilled astrologer. We will take a look at Aleister Crowley’s chart and at how each zodiac sign has its own special magickal inclination. We will also learn how magickal timing is determined through the use of moon phases, planetary hours and astrological correspondences.
THE PREDICTIVE POWER OF ECLIPSES ASSEMBlY C
Ronnie Dreyer
Eclipses have always been the best predictors of natal and mundane events beginning with ancient omens, and continuing through modern astrology. With five eclipses occurring in 2013, this lecture will explain the meaning of life-changing events presently unfolding in your chart and the world around you, and will especially focus on the connections between the three eclipses of April–May 2013 and the two eclipses in October–November 2013. Case studies will illustrate eclipses and how they are activated.
PREDICTING WORLD EVENTS ARIA AB
Joyce levine
Cycles of boom and bust occur throughout history. Nations rise to supremacy and then decline. Treaties among nations are made and broken. World trends are reflected by the cycles of outer planets. This talk focuses on how transits, particularly of Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, indicate what’s likely to happen. For example, what is started at the conjunction of two planets frequently comes to fruition or ending at the opposition.
ASTROLOGY AND COuNSELING CoNCERTo AB
Eileen McCabe
How do we experience ourselves in our role as astrologers? How do we delineate from the natal horoscope some of the core issues in a person’s life and how do we communicate the transits and progressions in a way that facilitates a healing and therapeutic dialogue? We will discuss the psychological dynamics that exist during any astrological consultation and how the development of counseling skills can enhance the spiritual work of astrology.

STRAIGHT TALK ON quEER ASTROLOGY CoNCERTo AB
Barry Perlman
Queer astrology challenges the assumption that our relational desires and gender/sexual expressions always neatly align with each other according to societal expectations. Whether or not someone identifies as queer, they still benefit from an astrology which doesn’t implicitly pathologize their choice to present a certain way, date members of a certain gender, or structure their relationships in any certain manner. We’ll discuss astrological values that support clients in proudly embracing their individualistic wants, rather than pressure them toward stifling conformity.
A LEGACY OF MARC EDMuND JONES: PLANETARY PATTERNS ARIA AB
David Perloff
During his lifetime, Marc Edmund Jones was one of the most influential astrologers of the 20th century. Today, he is perhaps best known for the Sabian Symbols. One of the often overlooked techniques Dr. Jones developed is Planetary Patterns (aka “The Temperament Type”)—determined by how the planets are arranged around the wheel. We will look at the seven planetary patterns—Bundle, Bowl, Bucket, Locomotive, Splash, See-Saw and Splay—and see how they can be a powerful aid in chart interpretation.
ARE VOID MOONS & MERCuRY RETROGRADES THAT BAD? MAESTRo AB
Samuel F. Reynolds
Astrologers speak often about the hazards of initiating actions during a void moon or Mercury retrograde. But is that mere superstition or is there some basis of truth to it all? Are there some cases where it’s best to initiate an action during a void moon or Mercury retrograde? Samuel briefly describes both the classical and modern understanding of void moons and Mercury retrogrades. Then he explores examples of how they work...and when they don’t.
SATuRN RETuRNS, SECT AND THE TABOO AGAINST DIFFICuLTY ASSEMBlY
leisa Schaim
This lecture will discuss the ancient concept of sect (whether one has a day or night chart) in relationship with how positively or negatively different people’s Saturn returns are experienced. Some of the most common ways Saturn returns are portrayed will then be looked at in light of this distinction, leading to a discussion of the issue of difficulty in contemporary astrology.

Like astrology, Buddhism is concerned with self-exploration and understanding the interconnectedness of all things. However, from a Buddhist standpoint most of our problems stem from the strong sense of self we grasp onto and relate from. Discover how the process of understanding our limited sense of self can lead to a greater awareness of our truer, larger selves which leads to less suffering and more happiness for ourselves and all others.
MEDICAL ASTROLOGY AND THE FRONTAL LOBE OF THE BRAIN CoNCERTo AB

She will discuss ADD, Alzheimer’s, Palsy and Bi-Polar Disorder as well as other issues connected with the frontal lobe.
2013 AND 2014: THE DOTS FINALLY CONNECT FOR GLOBAL CHANGE ASSEMBlY C
Misty Kuceris
The world is changing economically, technologically and socially in 2013 and 2014. With Jupiter entering Cancer the astrological energies explode: a cardinal T-square is created, a water grand trine is created, and the USA goes through another Jupiter return. And all of this is connected by the mutual reception between Saturn and Pluto. Find out what the changes will be and how they impact you personally.
YODS, GOLDEN YODS AND SEPTILE YODS ARIA AB
Rick levine
When it comes to aspect configurations, the yod has a certain air of mystery about it. But the powerful “Finger of God” may only be a faint shadow of more significant yods based upon the quintile and septile aspect series. How do you locate them? What do they mean? Why are they so important? This class is a real eye-opener as to the importance of quintile and septile configurations. Many chart examples will be used.
WHAT IS ASTROLOGY? oRCHESTRA
Bruce Scofield
Most people engaged with astrology focus on techniques in which the lives of human beings are analyzed. The subject of astrology is primarily known as a practice—its larger place among other subjects, and its main branches other than those of applied practice, have not been worked out. I will outline what I think are astrology’s major problems in becoming a subject in its own right and finding a place among other fields of inquiry.

Chris Brennan
During this workshop attendees will learn how to use an ancient timing technique called Zodiacal Releasing in order to divide a native’s life into different chapters with respect to their love life. The technique can be used to determine periods in which relationships are experienced as being more positive or negative, as well as to determine “peak periods” in a person’s love life, which are periods of heightened activity and importance in relationships.

Whether you’re doing 10-minute or 90-minute sessions, the approach is the same. Albert Einstein said, “99% of genius is knowing what’s important.” You have enough techniques in your toolbox yet seek something more in your client work. This practical seminar will improve your chart consultation skills by presenting useful concepts designed to alter your approach and enable you to more profoundly touch your clients. Organic astrOlOgy: seasOns and signs Maestro aB
ellen Zucker
The connection between the four seasons of the year and the twelve astrological signs is both elegant and organic, and provides a deeper understanding of the sign’s energy. We will explore why each sign is linked to a specific time of year and how each season shapes the signs’ expression. When you leave, you will understand this connection and never see the astrological signs in quite the same way.
Philadelphia astrologer, ellen Zucker, CAP, discovered astrology at age 14 when she devoured Linda Goodman’s Sun Signs in the local public library.
She is a graduate of Hofstra University, Long Island, New York. She continued her studies in New York City and became active in the mainstream astrological community. Ellen maintains an active astrological practice where she teaches and consults with clients online and locally. She is also the Pet Fashion Astrologer for the International Association of Pet Fashion Professionals.WEbSITE practicalastrologyandtarot.com EmAIL [email protected]

sOcial Media @ ncgr13 Tweet, Facebook and go online with us onsite
We encourage conference attendees using social media to share their experiences with those who can not attend. As you use Twitter, Facebook and/or Instagram this weekend, please tag your updates with the #ncgr13 hashtag so that people may follow your insights and observations from afar. The #astrology hashtag is also a good addition as it opens up the conversation to a wider audience.
If you’re new to using hashtags in your status updates, it’s as simple as typing the hash or pound symbol (#) followed by a keyword such as “ncgr13.” This acts to link all similarly labeled posts so they may be pulled from across social media into one grouping. by using the #astrology hashtag in your posts, anyone wanting astrological updates could search under this label.
An example would be: “So many great electional ideas for starting my business via Georgia Stathis! #ncgr13”
We would also love it if you shared your conference photos on social media. Did you get a great shot of michael Lutin talking about Neptune and Chiron in Pisces? Capture a reunion with your astrology family on Instagram? Share it and tag it with #ncgr13!
