It’s tasting a collaboration between cooks and farmers that’s been going on for three decades. In other words, it’s tasting food with a story.” Dan BarBer, executive chef

proceeds from 2009’s taste of greenmarket to benefit greenmarket’s youth education projectGreenmarket’s Youth Education Project connects city children in grades K-12 with farmers to help them gain an understanding of local agriculture and the importance of eating fresh, seasonal foods—for their bodies, their environment and their communities. Through fun, interactive experiences such as Greenmarket School Tours, Meet Your Farmer, Seed-to-Plate Cooking Classes and On the Farm visits, we enable children to experience food as a joyful journey that starts with a seed and ends on their plate.

Educational • School Tours at Greenmarkets to 3,500 children each year

Interactive • Meet Your Farmer classroom visits with over 50 participating farmers reaching 2,000 children annually

Seed-to-Plate Cooking Classes • with professional chefs and culinary educators for public school students

On the Farm • visits so city kids can learn first-hand how food is grown and how animals are raised

Educational resources and standards-based curriculum •materials developed with Columbia Teachers College

greenmarketSince 1976, Greenmarket staff, volunteers and farmers have worked together to promote regional agriculture and ensure a continuing supply of fresh, local produce for all New Yorkers. Shopping at Greenmarket is not only good for you, it’s good for regional economies, helps to preserves farmland, supports clean water and soil, encourages food security and diversity, and contributes to neighborhood revitalization by providing a safe and fun community gathering place. Greenmarket is a program of the Council on the Environment of New York City, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit which improves NYC’s quality of life through environmental programs that transform communities block by block and empowers all New Yorkers to secure a clean and healthy environment for future generations.

Greenmarket is one of the largest farmers market •networks in the country, with 50 farmers markets in all five boroughs

Our support of nearly 200 small, regional family •farmers helps preserve over 30,000 acres of farmland

80% of our farmers say they would be out of business if •it wasn’t for Greenmarket

We operate the largest farmers market food stamp/•EBT program in the country with EBT available at 24 Greenmarkets in 2009

We partner with city and food justice organizations •dedicated to improving access to nutritious, locally-grown food for all New Yorkers

Over 500,000 lbs of produce and baked goods were •donated to food rescue organizations in 2008 by Greenmarket farmers

We are dedicated to providing educational programs •for all ages that enhance awareness and support for regional, sustainable agriculture
