by Cyril Wimalasurendra KANDY The University of Peradeniya and the Peradeniya police are investigating the setting off of dangerous firecrackers in close proximity to the Akbar Hall of residence on Sunday (26) night. A number of students were injured. According to sources, a group of stu- dents celebrating the birth anniversary of the LTTE leader was responsible for set- ting the crackers off. The student community of the Engineering Faculty, in particular resi- dential students of Akbar Hall, yesterday (27) staged a protest against the high handed action of lighting crackers in the premises of their hall. Thet marched to the administration block of the universi- ty calling for an investigation into the incident and for enhanced security to the occupants of the hall of residence because they feared the threat of unscrupulous elements within the prem- ises. by Brian Tissera The United States yesterday reject- ed the view expressed by LTTE leader V. Prabhakaran, in his November 27 speech, that there is no alternate solu- tion to the problem faced by the Tamil people other than the establishment of a separate state. United States Ambassador Robert O. Blake said that they see an open path to the resolu- tion of the problem. “This problem can be solved through a process of sustained negotiations”. The views expressed by the LTTE leader cannot be accepted. The Government of Sri Lanka could pro- pose a solution based on an United Sri Lanka and this would very well be the basis for discussions, he added. Responding to a question, Ambassador Blake said that the LTTE is a proscribed institution in the USA and there is no way that they could obtain either funds or arms from within the USA. The recent arrest of 15 suspects by the FBI, in a failed attempt to procure arms, is evi- dence of the vigorous action taken by the US government to enforce the ban on the LTTE. He was speaking at a media brief- ing held in connection with the com- pletion of nine buildings which were converted into ones that were accessi- ble for disabled persons. This project was jointly imple- mented by USAID and the UK based Motivation Charitable Trust funded by a US$450,000 grant from USAID. Accessibility is important to physi- cally disabled people in order that they are able to live their lives with- out being dependent on others, he said. by Jayantha de Silva With the recent Supreme Court ruling invalidating the merger of the North and the East, the LTTE’s bid to gain international assistance via PTOMS (Tsunami Sahana Mandalaya) suffered an irreversible setback, said JVP Parliamentarian and General Secretary of the National Patriotic Movement, Wimal Weerawansa. He was speaking at the Janapranamabhani (People’s Salutation) ceremony held at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday to felici- tate the legal profession and others who were instrumental in filing a Fundamental Rights application in the Supreme Court against the amalgama- tion of the North and the East. “The time has come to release the peo- ple of the North-East from the hopeless situation arising out of the separate state prison, he stressed. The Cease Fire Agreement (CFA) gave the LTTE a meas- ure of legality for their Eelam, goal. The LTTE with the backing of foreign pow- ers has now set its goal of obtaining legal recognition for Eelam, while con- tinuing to stay within the CFA, he point- ed out. If the government continues to ignore the Supreme Court ruling and refrains from de-merging the North and the East, which was set up under the J. R. Jayewardene regime, a mass agitational campaign would be launched by the JVP against the government”, he warned. Dr. Gunadasa Amerasekera, Chairman of the National Patriotic Movement said that it was 19 years after merging the two provinces that the demerger of the North and the East was ruled by the Supreme Court. For that victory, the nation should pay tribute to JVP, he emphasised. The demerger is the first salvo towards national liberation, he added. JVP MP for Trincomalee Jayantha Wijesekera, who was a petitioner to the FR case, also spoke. Those who received awards for filing the petition were Wasantha Piyatissa, MP, Ampara, Attorneys at Law Manori Jinadasa, Gomin Dayasiri and postal peon Buhari.
