A nebulous identity. While it’s all different now, for a long time I felt so distant from that country, Colombia, there in the south…because a lot of time had passed, I hadn’t been there between 14 and 24, 10 very important years in which I was growing/changing/learning…that country…

Una identidad nebulosa. While it’s all different now, for a long time I felt so distant from that country, Colombia, allá en el sur…porque había pasado mucho tiempo, yo no había estado allí entre mis 14 y 24 años, 10 años muy importantes en que iba creciendo/cambiando/aprendiendo…ese país…

neblina=there is fog.

¿acaso soy yo la niebla? (am I the fog ?)

Allí en la niebla encuentro preguntas y de hecho

esta definición tiene mucho sentido… (There in the

fog I find questions, and in fact, this definition makes

a lot of sense).

Entonces me quedo con esa palabra y con otra:desdibujada. • So I’ll stick with that word and with another:

vague/blurred/sketchy

Casi que me gusta esta palabra más que todas las otras,

porque no tiene una buena traducción: yo tampoco. • I almost like this word more than all the rest, because it doesn’t

have a good translation: me neither.

porque a veces se me

acerca la gente, I won’t

name any names,

and they ask me what all

this means “Hispanic,

Latin@, Chican@…”

And I always say that the most important thing is the act of self-definition. Which is to say, how do you identify yourself?

I say, vague/blurred/sketchy, nebulous, not from here, not from over there, not from over here, and that’s it.
