PINELLAS COUNTY’S PUBLIC ART & DESIGN PROGRAMOne of Pinellas County Cultural Affairs’ most visible programs is the Public Art & Design Program. Its purpose is to enrich the quality of life for Pinellas County residents as well as support tourism and the economic vitality of Pinellas County through the enhancement of public spaces.
The Public Art & Design Program is overseen by the County’s Public Art & Design Committee, a qualifi ed group of arts professionals, architects, government offi cials and citizens who develop policies and goals for the selection and placement of public artworks. The Committee’s goal is to seek opportunities for public art projects in a variety of contexts and scales; to commission signature, iconic projects for places of civic importance; to establish a network of art integrated into our park, trail and transit systems infrastructure; and to provide community-based projects in areas where the County provides local government services.
TO INSPIRE,To refl ect the spirit of our time and the riches of nature,
To capture our imagination,
To emphasize the fl avor and character of our local community,
To create a source of civic pride for current and future generations and visitors,
In essence, to enrich our daily lives.

THE PUBLIC ART & DESIGN MASTER PLAN
“The Pinellas County Public Art & Design Program commissions art projects that suffuse the county’s visual landscape with creativity, wonder and engagement making public art something residents and visitors can expect to experience every day.” Public Art Master Planning Consultants, 2008
THE VISION• To support the creation of a civic realm that is intertwined with the fabric of the county – its civic landmarks and community gathering places; its landscapes and natural habitat.
• To demonstrate leadership in design excellence, support the County’s vision of “planning to stay” and refl ect the County’s desire to be a steward of the area’s fragile ecosystem.
THE GOALS• Public art should have an impact at various scales and engage all of the senses.
• Public art should become an integral part of the County’s visual landscape.
• Cultivate community awareness about art and culture, with priorities to commission artworks in places of high visibility and activity; and consider works that can be linked to environmental systems, natural environments, civic infrastructure and community gathering places.
The Public Art Master Plan can be viewed in its entirety at www.pinellasarts.org

WILDLIFE PUBLIC ART PROJECT, 2007
Boca Ciega Millennium Park
12410 74th Avenue N., Seminole
As the Public Art & Design Program’s fi rst artist-in-residence,
Leslie Fry produced a series of plaster and plant material sculptures, representing imaginary beings visible in the natural park setting. “The imagery and placement of the sculptures are designed to raise awareness about how humans impact our natural environment,”
said Fry.
The artist residency included a Sculpture
Search map, public tours, lectures and
hands-on workshops. A catalog was
published to preserve the project, as the artist’s
intent was to have the impermanent sculptures eventually fade into the park’s native landscape.
