Positive Ageing Summer News 2020 What a year we have had! Looking back, it is great to note how much our club has grown. Many of our members enjoy taking part in one to five activities per week. The friendships made at Affinity keep on growing and the health benefits only multiply. Indeed, according to Professor Boydell, from the University of South Wales, Sydney, there is emerging evidence that proves the benefits of ‘being connected’ resulting in an array of positive health and wellbeing outcomes. These include an increase in self-esteem and confidence, a sense of control and empowerment, improvements in psychological or mental wellbeing, and positive mood linked to decreases in symptoms of anxiety and depression. Our new members joined Affinity through recommendations received from their friends, their interest in following an activity they enjoy (like dancing, singing, playing Canasta or playing table-tennis) or because their GP’s have recommended them to join their local Community Centre. The latter is known as ‘Social Prescribing.’ This is the current buzz phrase in healthcare and is part of a more integrated approach that is set to prioritise being and staying well. It is about understanding how our lives are affected by our health. Sometimes, pills, surgery or medical intervention alone can’t solve our problems. Summer News 2020

What a year we have had!

Dr Dixon (OBE), one of the earliest pioneers of Social Prescription in the UK, concluded that social prescribing empowers people to take control of their health and wellbeing. In recent months, these recommendations from GP’s have been increasing. I am happy to welcome seniors and discuss with them the variety of activities on offer at our club that could match their interests. These activities will not only increase their social connections, but provide them with joy, laughter and optimism.

Furthermore, activities like singing, here at Affinity, have become very popular amongst our members because they enjoy creating and participating in something that is fun and has a purpose. Other activities such as the three dancing classes on offer at Affinity: Zumba Gold, Solo Ballroom Dancing and Line Dancing give our members the opportunity to dance, exercise and be part of a social activity. These activities are highly recommended for balance and to help prevent falls. Some GP’s recognise that those patients who experience debilitating falls find it hard to do repetitive boring exercises. Hence, dancing can make exercising more enjoyable. Check our calendar of activities on the last page for information on all our classes.

I look forward to a great 2020 and sincerely hope that more members feel encouraged to try something new this year. Challenge yourselves, you know it is worth it!
