WHAT IS CAREER DEVELOPMENT?
Career development is the lifelong process of
managing progression in learning and work.
The quality of this process significantly determines

have, the income at their disposal.
It also determines the social and economic
contribution they make to the communities and
societies of which they are part.

High school is the final transition into
adulthood and the world of work as students
begin separating from parents and exploring
and defining their independence.
Students are deciding who they are, what
they do well, and what they will do when they
graduate. During these adolescent years, students are evaluating their strengths, skills
and abilities.

The biggest influence is their peer group.
They are searching for a place to belong and rely on peer
acceptance and feedback.
They face increased pressures regarding risk behaviors and
mature, meaningful relationships.
They need guidance in making concrete and compounded
decisions.
They must deal with academic pressures as they face high-
stakes testing, the challenges of making post-secondary
decisions, the challenges of college admissions, scholarship
and financial aid application process and entrance into a
competitive job market.

WHY IS CAREER DEVELOPMENT
BECOMING MORE IMPORTANT?
The pace of change, driven by technology and globalisation,
means that organisations are constantly exposed to change.
They are therefore less willing to make long-term
commitments to individuals; where they do, it is in exchange
for flexibility about the roles and tasks the individuals willperform.
Increasingly, therefore, security lies not in employment but
in employability. Individuals who want to maintain their
employability have to be willing to regularly learn new skills. So careers are now increasingly seen not as being chosen
but as being constructed, through the series of choices
about learning and work that people make throughout their
lives.

INFORMATION?
Good-quality career information is essential for good-quality career development.
It needs to include information on education and trainingopportunities, on occupations and their characteristics, and on labour market supply and demand.
It also needs to include information on the occupationalimplications of educational decisions, and on the learningpathways that lead to particular occupational destinations.
In addition, it needs to include information on how these

Middle Years is a critical time when students begin to explore
who they are and how their interests, strengths, and abilities fit
with their life and learning both inside and outside of school.
It is a time of rapid growth and development when young
adolescents seek to understand their unique personal identity
while becoming more independent at home and at school.
