YEAR 8 CAMP
Swimming, skiing, mountain bike riding, orienteering, and white-water rafting; sounds like an action packed holiday and
exhausting just to think about. However, that’s what our Year 8s were treated to on their recent camp in the Rubicon Valley.
None of these activities could be possible and indeed successful without the students learning and applying their skills and
knowledge of teamwork along with our school values, all the while skilfully guided by the Rubicon staff.
It was a fabulous opportunity for students to get to know each other better as a group, form new friendships and rekindle old
acquaintances, build trust and grow as individuals through some pretty extreme, physically taxing but fun filled activities. We
even survived meat free Monday and learnt about the environmental impacts of water and electricity usage

READING SCHOOL WIDE FOCUS 2019
5
This is the fifth year of NDSC’s school wide literacy focus. For
the previous four years we worked on students’ ability to
write well at a secondary school level as our emphasis. We
had outstanding success with this. Student growth as
measured by the year 9 NAPLAN indicated that our high
growth over a three-year period
was at 31%. For this growth, it
doesn’t matter the starting point of
the students, just how much they
have achieved in their first few
years of secondary school. Last
year’s growth in writing as
measured by Year 9 NAPLAN was
one of the highest in the State at
41%. We are all very proud of our
students and their achievements.
As writing is going along so well,
this year we swapped our focus to
reading comprehension. Our
NAPLAN results for Year 9 students
this year was especially strong,
with students growing above State
averages for all areas of NAPLAN. This is a massive
achievement by our current year 9 students. We congratulate
you and your families on this effort.
As a staff we have been introduced to many techniques and
strategies to work with students in every subject to improve
their ability to read the sophisticated range of non-fiction /
informative texts that is required for every discipline at
secondary school. It is pleasing to see this early positive
response in the growth of student abilities. One element that
we have been working on particularly hard is vocabulary
development in students. At secondary school there is a huge
amount of vocabulary in every subject that is specific to that
discipline. ‘Research reveals that vocabulary knowledge is the
single best indicator of students’
reading ability, comprehension,
and familiarity with academic
discourse.’ (From Words their way:
word study with middle and
secondary students.)
For terms 3 & 4 this year we have
implemented a trial of reader’s
notebooks from years 7-10. These
are designed for every subject and
every teacher has been using them
with trial classes before, during
and after reading. The aim is for
students to be more aware of their
thinking while reading. If meaning
breaks down for students, we want
them to have a range of strategies
to get back on track so that they can grow their
comprehension of every discipline. We will be analysing the
results of the trial at the end of term 4. We will reflect on
what has worked well and what needs to be further honed to
make these notebooks effective reading comprehension tools
for all students next year.
