Catherine Dunkley - 7 October 1959 to 12 April 2016

It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge the passing of

Catherine, a well thought of and loved member of Nelson

Embroiderers’ Guild.

Catherine was passionate about What A Weekend. It was all about

bringing like minded people together for a weekend of stitching and

friendship. And what a success WAW has become. We all look forward to it

every year. This has been due to Catherine’s ongoing commitment, energy

and organisational skills. Catherine came to epitomise WAW and was the “go to person” for

information and help. Catherine really cared about every person who came to WAW and would do

her utmost to ensure that everyone was in their preferred class, that everyone was warm and

comfortable, and that there was always enough food. She was also interested in and supportive of

the general running of the guild.

Anything Catherine took on she did so wholeheartedly. This included the NZ Lace Society,

where she re-organised their national library resources, to allow members all over NZ to

have access. She also raised funds for the Tapawera Fire Brigade and Girl Guides in which

she was involved.

Catherine’s faith was very important to her. Her organisational skills were put to good use

within her Church, where she was on the Parish Council, was Church Secretary for 12

years. She was instrumental in ensuring that the earthquake strengthening of the church

happened.

Tony Gray, Chief Executive of NMIT, wrote to his staff saying that “Catherine was a

catering tutor at NMIT (Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology) for almost nineteen

years, and played an important part in the success and excellent reputation of the

professional cookery programmes.” He finished his tribute with the following Whakatauke

E te raukura, kua mutu te ngaua o tō tinana e te mamae, tēnā, e oki. Nā tō aroha ki te whakaako i ngā tauira ahakoa nō whea, nō te ao kē te whiwhi. E te raukura Takoto mai Takoto mai To you our treasure, the biting pain to your body has ended, now rest. Because of your love for teaching all students regardless of where they've come from the reward truly belongs to the world To you our treasure Lay down Lay down We send our deepest condolences to her husband, Arthur and her parents.

Tutor Details

1601 Mona Townson: Mona has used beads in her textile and jewellery work for many years. She

places much importance on the colour, shape, size, and composition of each piece. Mona has

successfully exhibited nationally, completed commissioned works and she has sold her jewellery in

galleries New Zealand wide.

1602 Helen Packer: A retired school teacher, having taught in both primary and secondary

schools. Helen has taught embroidery in secondary schools, embroidery guild, and for many years

at the Wanaka Embroidery weekend, also at several classes of patchwork/ embroidery workshops.

Helen designed and trained in the embroidery for Tamahine Knitwear Company, for 15 years. She

attended night classes for 2 years at Dunedin Technical School, and 1 year at Glasgow School of Art.

1603 Anne Marie Moorhead: Anne Marie lives in Wellington and holds Part 1 of City and Guilds

International. She has tutored for many years at Nancy’s Design Studio in Wellington and regularly

takes workshops at the Wanaka School of Embroidery. She has also tutored at WAW and The Great

Escape and for various Guilds around the country. Her main interests are crewel work, stump work,

gold work and silk shading.

1604 Trish Hughes: Trish has been a counted thread enthusiast all her life and really enjoys helping

other embroiderers discover the joys of traditional embroidery. She is a member of the Whangarei

Embroiderers’ Guild and has taught at Conferences and Guilds all over New Zealand.

1605 Ann Bell: Ann has worked with all forms of fibre from a very early age, knitting, crocheting,

tatting, pattern making and dressmaking and later learning spinning, weaving and dyeing. Over the

last few years Ann has been able to take time to explore more creative directions incorporating paper

and paints, using all the skills learned in the past and uses all these skills to teach others. Anne’s

work has been widely exhibited in Australia and New Zealand and she has taught bookbinding

throughout NZ.

1606 Margaret Douglas: Margaret was a late starter to embroidery and did not start stitching until

after her mother passed away and left some unfinished pieces - it quickly became a passion for

Margaret. She stitches in all mediums and styles and likes the pieces she stitches to have meaning.

1607 Jeanette Trotman: Jeanette is particularly interested in patterns and design. She enjoys

playing with colour and is interested in how colours behave. She has taught at Guild and at Wanaka

Embroidery School. Jeanette has judged both at conference and locally and is an ANZEG

embroidery module assessor. She enjoys bringing historic, lesser known techniques up to date using

modern colours, fabrics and threads.

1601 Mona Townson -

Meanderings - beaded book

cover A fun class for all skill levels, where

you can design your own book

cover (or bag) and learn how to

attach the different types of beads to

gain movement and depth. Colour,

texture, size and shape of the beads

will be used to create a harmonious

panel with embroidered shapes

using smaller beads, on the back of

these items.

A $2 cost for the instructions

Students can bring their own

materials and beads (I will have extras)

The book cover that you have will be the size.

However any sized book is acceptable.

The sample will be the actual item. However I will

create another book cover if I do have the opportunity to teach at the class.

The techniques will be able to be used on a variety of items.

1602: Helen Packer - Hanging work

bag

Besides creating a very useful work bag

with four separate pockets, this is an

exercise in changing a piece of patterned

fabric’s appearance by using colour and

stitches. Students will be able to stitch the

top and attach one pocket in the time

allowed. Instructions will be provided to

enable completion at home (only hand

stitching is used so a great travelling

piece).

Skill Level Required: Suitable for all levels

of experience. Notes: $4.50

1603: Anne Marie Moorhead - Pansy Hussif This hand embroidered and constructed Hussif is

both useful and pretty. All the patterns for the

pockets and the embroidery are provided and

people are encouraged to adapt the pockets to

reflect their own requirements. Construction will

not be completed in class but all the information

needed to finish the project is provided. Stitches

used include satin stitch, bullion knots, French

knots, buttonhole stitch and Palestrina stitch. Beads

are added for embellishment.

Skill level required: Motivated beginners.

1604: Trish Hughes - Punto Antico

Punto-Antico Style Mat with Bullion Border

This mat measures 18cm. x 18cm. and is worked on 30ct. Danico linen. It can either be

stitched with matching or contrasting DMC Perlé 8 and 12 threads. It is suitable for

Intermediate to Advanced embroiderers with a working knowledge of hem stitch and

bullions.

Kit: $15 - contains fabric, pre-tacked and neatened, spare piece of fabric to practice on,

1605: Ann Bell – Bookbinding

Multi Layered Star Concertina and a Notebook

with a Wraparound Cover

Come along and make a delightful coloured

multilayered star concertina with ties and beads on

the spine. This makes a great gift that can be used to

display photos, short poems or whatever comes to

mind. (Size is 140mm x 140mm).

We will also make a lovely little notebook

with a soft cover, exposed stitching and a

wraparound cover. This is great for the

handbag size A6 (148mm x 105mm) opens

well and can have a hard cover. The

photo shows samples that are half size.

Suitable for all levels

1606: Margaret Douglas - Ephrata Illumination Goldwork

Ephrata Illumination was inspired by work I

saw at the Ephrata Cloister in

Pennsylvania. The work I have based this on,

was penned in c. 1740. My piece is "soft" gold

work and is stitched with gold threads and

stranded cotton. I have stitched the sample

close to the original colours, but the Illumination

would be effective stitched in any colour

combination. The pattern needs to be

transferred onto the fabric and the fabric

mounted in the hoop prior to class starting.

Instructions for this will be included with the needs list.

The kit cost is $15.00.

This piece is suitable for all levels of expertise.

1607 Jeanette Trotman - Humble Huckaback

Swedish embroidery, also known as Swedish darning, Swedish

weaving, Huck weaving or Huckaback embroidery, was very

popular in the 1930s especially in America. It is believed to

have originated in Sweden in the 17th century and was a form

of embroidery traditionally kept for items of household linen.

The floats in the huckaback fabric weave are used to embroider

the patterns using a simple darning stitch. There will be a

choice of embroidery patterns and fabric colour. The

huckaback fabric will be hand dyed. Colours of the threads

used, Perle 8, cotton or rayon stranded will be the Stitcher's

choice.

The completed panel can be made into a bag, or two cushions

approximately 36cm square. The photograph is an example

only.

Huckaback fabric is not obtainable in New Zealand or Australia; imported from America, the cost

for the 16 count fabric, white or hand dyed, will be $20.00 per piece. Full stitching patterns will be

provided at no extra cost.

Skill Level Required: This class is suitable for all abilities.
