Chronic renal disease epidemiology
Worldwide concern by nephrologists and other doctors
The world community of nephrologists as well as other doctors are increasingly worried about the epidemic dimensions of nephrological disease and especially diabetes mellitus and hypertensive disease which create serious renal complications. The rate of incidence is estimated at 45% for diabetes mellitus and 27% for hypertension. The rest is taken up by other types of kidney disease, for example primary and secondary glomerulonephritis and hereditary disease. Chronic renal disease affects 11%-17% of the World’s adult population.

Similarly the cost of haemodialysis is spiralling upwards every decade. In the 1980s it was 200 million US Dollars and in the last decade it rose to over one trillion dollars.
In Cyprus we have about 500 patients that are treated with haemodialysis and 100 of them are on peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). As can be seen on the slide the number of haemodialysis sessions in the Nicosia General Hospital has been doubling every decade. The percentage increase between 2009 and 2010 is about 22%.
The number of patients per year is about 28, which means that we have one new patient every fortnight.
