FRANK ARGOTE-FREYRE ATTHE AMERICAN PROMISE or THE AMERICAN MENACE:From the time of the Founding Fathers to the present day, immigration has been an ongoing conundrum for political leaders and the American public. Immigrants are both beloved and despised. Dr. Argote-Freyre will review the history of immigration and the issues of the modern debate.

MARCH 23 JAN FINDLAY TRIO ATVOCAL and INSTRUMENTAL INTERPRETATIONS of JAZZ: The trio, in a concert setting demonstrates how jazz, an American creation, is unique as a free-flowing art form. The group will demonstrate how musical compositions that are traditionally identified as classical, rock, or folk can be jazzified.

APRIL 13 FRED MILLER AT LECTURE-IN-SONG ; JUDY GARLANDA musical and anecdotal overview of the great American entertainer’s life and career.

APRIL 27 DR. PERRY LEAVELL ATOUTSIDERS, POPULISTS, and NATIONALISTS IN AMERICAN HISTORY: President Trump has been called an outsider, a populist and a nationalist. What have these words meant in American history? Dr.

Leavell’s lecture will give us a better understanding of politics today.

BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION OF LECTURERS

EUGENE LIEBER: A historian of topics ranging from ancient Greece and Rome to the political struggles in our contemporary world. A graduate of Rutgers University and the University of Connecticut.

JAN FINDLAY has been singing professionally for over forty years. She has appeared in clubs throughout New York City and is a favorite at Shanghai Jazz in Madison, NJ. Joining Jan are jazz pianist TOMOKO OHNO, and bassist RICK CRANE, both graduates of the renowned Jazz Studies Program at William Paterson University.

DR. FRANK ARGOTE-FREYRE: A scholar of Latin American History at Kean University. His first book, published in 2006, was Fulgencio Batista: From Revolutionary to Strongman,. His second book was A Brief History of the Caribbean. He received his Ph.D. from Rutgers University.

DR. GILLIAN HETTINGER: She received her Ph.D. in British Literature from Drew University and is currently teaching at William Paterson University. She has been awarded multiple fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation.

FRED MILLER: A pianist, vocalist, and producer of operettas, dramas, musicals, and cabarets. Fred is also the founder of the Copper Penny Players.

DR. PERRY LEAVELL: He received his MA from Duke University and his Ph.D. with distinction from Tulane University. He taught history for four decades at Drew University. The history department at Drew University has endowed a fund to honor his extraordinary service to the university and to hundreds of Drew students.

DR. BOB BUTTS: A graduate of the University of Iowa, the Juilliard School, and the American Conservatory of Music. He is the founder and conductor of the Baroque Orchestra of New Jersey. He has conducted operas throughout Europe and most recently he presented recitals of his own compositions in Venice, Italy. Dr. Butts teaches at Drew and Montclair State Universities.

MARCH 9 EUGENE LIEBER AT OUR FIRST THREE PRESIDENTS: WASHINGTON, ADAMS, and JEFFERSON: The lecture about these presidents will include their successes and failures, their complex lives, and how they shaped the

future of a new nation.
