Quick IntroductionThis manual provides a quick guide to the video edit software Nero Video 11. The manual complements the video tutorial series on Nero Video 11 (click here for the Youtube link). The manual is best used when working simultaneously with Nero Video. The manual provides step by step solution to the basic video edit actions.

DefinitionsA clip is a video file that you recorded with the camera and imported into Nero Video. Most often, you cut several clips together to produce one final video.

The guide refers to the left mouse click as the click. When you work with Nero Video, please check out the right mouse click from time to time. Useful actions are often hidden in the right mouse click.

3Chapter 1: First contactLearning your way around Nero Video

This chapter provides a first look at Nero Video: How to set up a video project, and a quick introduc-tion to the Nero Video interface.

Setting up your video project

Open Nero Video by double-clicking the icon:

A welcome screen opens.Nero Video lets you manage your audio-visual media, make movies and export them onto your PC, the Internet, or onto a DVD. This manual will focus on how to make movies.

1. Click on More >> and then Configure... : Under the Folders tab you can set the folders where your imported videos will be stored.

2. To make a video, click on Make Movie or Slide Show.

2

1

Page 4: Nero Video Manual

4First you need to set up your project:

1. Chose a name for your project.2. You can use PAL or NTSC. Today, most TVs and all computer screens can read both formats. The

main difference between the two formats is the frames per second rate. That is the number of frames there are in one second of film. PAL videos have 25 frames per second, while NTSC videos have 29.97 fps. Chose the format that corresponds to your raw footage.

3. Decide which resolution your final video should have. For Internet 720*480 or 1280*720 is very good. The greater the resolution the bigger the final video file will be, the longer it will take to upload it to the Internet.

4. Set the audio to mono or stereo. For internet, mono is often good enough.5. Click OK

5Overview of the Nero Video Interface

Nero Video is designed to cater to the beginner as well as to a more experienced user. On the left hand side you find two tabs:

1. Express editing: The Express Editing mode is kept easy and does not offer as many possibilities as the Advanced Editing mode. It includes only one main video/picture track in the timeline, with two additional audio tracks for Music and Narration. I recommend the Express Editing mode for users who are not too experienced with video editing, or for more experienced users who want to create a simple project with very little effort. Making photo slide shows is very easy in the express mode

2. Advanced editing: The Advanced Editing mode offers multiple video and audio tracks and more editing options in general. It is suitable for more elaborate projects including the use of key-frames. (see page 23)

Both modes are designed similarly – they include:

3. A preview area in the upper left of the screen, and 4. Various libraries on the upper right of the screen. 5. The timeline in the lower part of the screen. The timeline is the most visible change when you

switch between the editing modes. 6. A toolbar separates the upper part from the lower part of your screen.

This manual will focus solemnly on the advanced editing mode. By clicking the Advanced Editing tab you access its user interface.

The Advanced Editing mode gives you a greater control how you want to edit your video. If it doesn’t display already, click on the advanced editing tab to access this mode.

Media and effects library

The upper left hand area displays different folders My Media, Effect Palette and Properties1. My Media is the library of your videos, pictures and audio files.2. You can choose between 2 view options.3. You can arrange files by name or date.4. You can choose what you want to see: All files or only last imported files, etc.5. From here you can drag any media (video, photo, sound) onto your timeline.

6. Effect Palette organizes different effects you can use on your video in several categories: Video Effect, Audio Effect, Text, Transitions (for video and audio), Clip Art, Backgrounds.

7. If you use one of these effects frequently, you can put it into your favorites selection using the right mouse click. You access your favorites selection by selecting Favorites in the Show drop down menu.

8. Properties displays the properties of a selected clip or effect on the timeline. Here you can change many properties of your video and adjust filters that you use for your clips.

7Timeline

At the bottom, you have the timeline. The timeline is a graphical representation of your video. 1. Time is displayed horizontally in minutes, seconds, and frames. Using the space bar on your key

board you can play and stop your video.2. Your video is made up of tracks: you have a Narration track, Music track, 2 Video tracks (each with

its respective sound track), and a Master Effect track where you can place effects from the Effect Palette. Elements such as videos or photos that are placed in a track at the top will hide elements in tracks below.

2

3 4 5

6

3. You can change the view of your timeline depending on your needs: minimal, mixed, and the extended timeline view when you want to work on your sound and need to see the waveform.

4. You can add further tracks as needed: a) add an video track if you want to create titles, b) add an audio track, if you need more sound tracks, c) add an audio/video track if you want to place another video (that contains sound) over the existing one.

5. Zoom bar: here you can adjust the zoom factor: a) Zoom out for placing video clips into the right order (rough cut), b) zoom in for detailed editing work.

6. This button navigates you to the Arranging Screen where you can arrange your clips, which you placed on video 1 track.

1

Page 8: Nero Video Manual

8Toolbar

The timeline is where you arrange and work on your video. For this different tools are at your disposal. You find them in the Toolbar above and on the right side of the timeline:

1. Nero PiP (picture in picture effects) and Themes offer possibilities to insert animated video ef-fects into your video.

2. The Record audio feature is great for making your own voice over or narration tracks. Just make sure that you turn off the speakers on your computer or laptop when recording, to avoid feed-back noise. (see page 20)

3. In Movie Options you can change your video setting at any time.4. With Duration you can adjust the duration of your photos or text boxes when you select them.

This feature doesn’t work on video files.5. Movie detection detects scenes in your video or sound clips: when you have recorded a long clip

that contains different scenes and you would like Nero to detect them automatically and separate them.

play your video. Use high quality playback when you are correcting the colors or the brightness of your video.

5. Full screen lets you preview your video on the entire screen.6. Guides and rulers: use the “safe area” if you are inserting sub titles or text. This way, you make

sure that your text can be read on older TV sets that tend to crop 16:9 films.7. Snapshot takes a photo of the current image in the preview area. This is a quick way to extract

pictures from your video.8. Video control buttons: play/pause; go forward/backward frame by frame; stop; go to the next/

previous edit point.

1. There is a red line in the timeline that you can move around. It’s the player head. You can play and stop your video using the space bar on your key board.

2. Place the player head over your video and the corresponding image will appear in the Preview area in the upper right hand part.

3. Below the image you can scroll forward and backward in your movie. This corresponds to the movement of your player head in the timeline.

11Chapter 3: Import and arrangeImporting media and creating a rough cut

Nero Video supports almost all video formats. The new cameras tend to record video in the AVCHD format! Nero Video lets you import AVCHD clips directly from your camera onto your PC and into your Nero Video project. Other formats need to be transferred manually onto your computer and then imported into Nero Video. In other words, first you need to copy the entire content from your camera’s memory card onto your PC and only then you can import it into your project. To be on the safe side, copy the entire folder structure on your memory card, and not just the video files. Some of these folders contain video information that you might need later on.Make sure the resolution of your video clips matches the resolution of your project. You can adjust the resolution of your project in Movie Options (see page 8).

Import media

In the My Media folder you open the Import tab to import all possible media into your project:

1. Import from Nero Media Browser lets you use the Nero Media Browser to import files.2. Capture: You can capture a video straight from your computer using the build in camera, if you

have one, or by connecting a video camera to your computer. Make sure you turn off the speakers of your PC when using this feature, or else you risk a strong audio feedback. If you can capture from analog or MiniDV tape cameras, make sure that a) no applications are running that place a high demand on your computer’s processor; b) there are no applications run-ning in full-screen mode; c) the workstation is not blocked during the entire capture process; d) there is sufficient space on your hard drive.

3. Import power point.4. If you would like to import photos, music or videos stored on your PC’s hard drive use Import

Files.5. Import from AVCHD camera: plug in your camera and import your footage directly into Nero

Video. Please consult your camera manual for correct connection to your computer. Some cameras need to be plugged into the electric grid.

12

3

4

5

Page 12: Nero Video Manual

12

A window opens showing you all the clips on your camera:

1

23

1. Select all or use the control or shift key to make a focused selection.2. Your videos will be saved into this location on your PC. 3. Press OK and your videos will be imported.

The imported media files will appear in the media library. Video clips in the video tab, photos under the photo tab.

Page 13: Nero Video Manual

13Now you can select the clips you want to use in your video and place them onto your timeline:

1. Select the standard tool and (see also page 18)2. Drag the clips onto the timeline. Place videos, photos and text onto a video/audio (or video only)

track. Place sound or music clips onto the music track (or audio only track).

Trim your clips (version A)

Once the clips are on your timeline, you need to trim them.Trimming a video means adjusting the start and end points of the video, be-cause when you are filming, you always start recording before the action starts. This way you make sure you don’t miss anything. Back in the editing room, you want to get rid of this extra footage.

1

2

1. On your timeline, zoom in for more precise trimming.2. Select the standard tool.

1 2

Page 14: Nero Video Manual

14

3. Hover with the mouse over the ends of your clip. Once the mouse changes its shape, click and drag the mouse inwards.

4. Do this for the start and end point of your clip.

Trim your clips (version B)

Another way to import clips is by double clicking the clip and use the clip preview window. You can preview and trim your clip before adding it to the timeline:

3 4

1. Double click the clip in My Media. 2. A preview window opens.

1

2

Page 15: Nero Video Manual

15

3. Press play and stop at the moment you would like the clip to start, marked by a red player head.4. Position the black trim-marks at that point.5. Repeat the action to trim your clip at the end. 6. Close the preview window. The information is now saved to your clip.7. Drag your trimmed clip onto the timeline.

34 5

6

Page 16: Nero Video Manual

16Make a title for your video

Now we want to make a title. For this we want to insert a text into our video.

1. From the Effect Palette, in the Text tab, chose Static Text and drag it onto the timeline. Drag text onto higher up tracks (video 2, video 3, etc.). This way your text will display on top of your image placed on tracks below (video 1).

2. In the Preview Window replace the Sample Text with your title.3. You can edit the text font. Click Done when you are happy with the font.4. Click on the title and drag it where you want it to display. Use the Safe Area Function and place

your text within these limits.5. Additional text effects can be altered in the Properties palette. For clip properties to display, the

player head must be placed on the clip and the clip must be selected (this is the case when the clip turns dark blue).

3

4

5

12

Page 17: Nero Video Manual

17Arrange your clips

With all the material on your timeline you can play with the arrangement of your clips. You can do this in two ways:

A. On the timeline

1. You can do this directly in the timeline: select the standard tool from your tool bar to the left of the timeline. (see page 18)

2. Click and drag the clips to the desired position. If you want to select several clips use the control or shift key.

You can close the gabs between your clips on the timeline by making a right click between the two clips and selecting delete and close gap. This way you make sure you have one continuous video.

B. In the arranging screen

1

2

1. Click on the arranging screen icon.

2. Click and drag your clips to the desired positions and sequence. The arranging screen only works for videos placed in the video 1 track. Media placed on video 2 or 3 tracks (such as the title text created on page 16) won’t show in the arranging screen.

Having arranged the clips and pictures in the right order, a first rough cut of your video is ready.

2

1

Page 18: Nero Video Manual

18Chapter 4: The edit toolsGetting to know the edit tools

There are different tools that let you work on your video. Remember: none of the tools make you lose material. You can cut, trim and delete clips in Nero Video and your action will not affect the actual footage stored on your hard drive. The changes you make to your clips are visible only in your project. Nero Video remembers the information about each clip – that you trimmed it, or that you changed the color, etc. – and displays the clip accordingly in your timeline. But all your clips in your media library are in their raw state.

The edit tools can be found in the tools palette at the right side of the timeline. Each tool enables you to work on your clips in the timeline. Some tools are grouped together into one icon. To select a specific tool from that group click and hold the mouse click down until the tools appear.

1. Standard tool: This tool you will use most often. The tool can be used to Select clips; Move clips; Trim clips; Drag media or filters onto the timeline; Work with key frames.

2. Select tools: to select multiple clips, you can use different selecting tools:• The rectangle lets you select multiple clips• The arrows let you select clips on one particular track either left, right or both sides of your

cursor.3. Cutter: Cuts a clip in two parts. If a video contains an associated audio clip, the audio clip is cut

as well. For precise cuts stop the player head (see page 9) at the point you want to cut the video, make sure the magnet is on, and use the scissors to cut at that point.

4. Slip tool: Changes the start and end point of a trimmed clip on the timeline without changing the length of the clip. When scrubbing the clip, the total duration of the file is shown. Surround-ing clips are not affected. This tool is handy when you want to show a different part of the clip but you want to keep its length on the timeline unchanged. This only works if one or both clips have been trimmed and there is extra material (at the end and beginning of the clip) to play with.

5. Roll Tool: Is similar to the slip tool. But this time you adjust the end and start point of two ad-jacent clips simultaneously. So if you move the roll tool to the right, your left clip becomes longer and your right clip shorter. The total duration of both clips as shown on the timeline is retained. Again, this only works if one or both clips have trimmed material to play with.

6. Magnet: is an important tool that can safe you a lot of time. When on, everything on the time-line becomes magnetic. For example you can glue a clip to another if its border hovers close to the border of the another clip. Small marks show you which edit point you are aligning to. This also works with clips in other tracks, or with the player head.

19Chapter 5: Expert edit techniquesAdvanced features that let you polish your video

This chapter looks at some advanced features that not everyone might need, but that are needed to polish your video further.

Unlink video and audio

A video clip comes with an attached sound track. You can separate the image from the sound on the timeline: Make a right mouse click on the video, and select unlink video and audio. Now you can delete the sound without deleting the image or vice versa.

Page 20: Nero Video Manual

20Voice over

You can record your voice right into your project, creating a spoken narration.

1. Place the player head where you want to start your recording.2. Click on the recording icon. The audio recording window opens.3. Select the audio device. An external microphone (Doc Mic, or Jack Mic) is to be preferred to the

PC in built microphone (Microphone Array).4. Turn of the speakers to avoid any feedback loops.5. Press OK, the recorder window opens, and the recorder starts recording. Start talking.6. When done press the red button.7. Your recorded voice will display in the narration track.

21Transitions

You can add transitions to smoothen the cuts between the video clips on your timeline. Transition are smooth fades from one image to another. For example:

• The video can start on a black color with the image coming into appearance gradually. • To smoothen the cuts between two video clips, clip A fades out while at the same time clip B

appears gradually.

1. Go to the Transition tab in the Effect Palette. Here you find transitions for your image as well as for your sound tracks. Most common image transitions are Crossfade and Dip to Color in the Dissolve group. Most common audio transitions are Crossfade, Fade In, Fade Out in the Audio Fades group.

2. Your video clips are made up of an image track and an audio track. Click and drag image transi-tions onto the image part of your clip in the timeline. Click and drag audio transitions onto the audio part of your clip in the timeline. A fade in/out is placed at the beginning/end of the clip. A fade over is placed between two adjacent clips.

3. You can change the length of your transition in the properties tab, or 4. By dragging the ends of the transition on the timeline.

34

22Filters

You can enhance your image by applying video filters onto your clips:

1. In the Effect Palette find the desired filter. You can chose from audio as well as video filters. Most used video filters are brightness & contrast; Hue, Saturation and Lightness; and Expo-sure in the Adjust group.

2. Click and drag the filter onto the clip of your choice on the timeline.3. Make sure the clip is selected (with the Standard tool; the clip turns dark blue) and the Player

Head is positioned on the clip. 4. In the Properties palette you can make adjustments to the filter.5. If you want to make adjustments for the entire video clip you can also drag your filters into the

Master Effects track.

23Key frames

DefinitionA film is a sequence of images, also called frames. Traditionally 1 sec. of film is made up of 24 frames. Keyframes are special frames. They define the start and end point of a smooth transition. For exam-ple: A comic animator wants to move a rectangle from left to right in the time span of 2 seconds. Instead of drawing an rectangle in each of the 48 frames, each time with a slight displacement to the right – as it is done in traditional stop-motion animation – the animator defines only two frames: the first frame, the starting position of the rectangle, and the last frame, the end position of the rectan-gle’s movement. The 46 frames in between are then calculated by the computer.

Key frames can be applied to any video effect, be it a visual displacement of an object, or a gradual increase of some filter settings, or gradual adjustment of audio levels (see page 24). Remember, you can use keyframes with every clip property or filter. If you use a filter without key-frames, you make adjustments to the entire clip, not just a portion of the clip.

The use of Key frames is illustrated on page 24: adjusting audio levels for a portion of a clip.

Adjust audio levels

Before you can finalise your video. You need to adjust the audio levels. You can do this for an entire clip or for a portion of the clip.

Adjusting the audio levels for an entire clip:1. Select the clip in your timeline and place your player head on the clip. The clip’s properties will

display in the Properties palette. 2. Open the Audio Level tab in the properties. 3. Click and drag the decibel slider to the right to increase the audio levels, or to the left to decrease

the audio levels.

Adjusting the audio levels for a portion of the clip:1. Select the clip in your timeline and place your player head on the clip. The clip’s properties will dis-

play in the Properties palette.2. Select the Use keyframes check-box in the Audio Level tab. 3. Switch to Extended Timeline View so that you see the waveform of your audio clips.4. Use the Standard Tool.5. With the mouse, hover over the audio level line till a small “+” appears. Click and a dot will ap-

pear on the line. You have created a key frame!6. Move this dot up (to increase audio levels) or down (to decrease audio levels). 7. The audio levels will change according to the line you draw with these dots.

25Chapter 6: ExportExport your video project to a self contained video

Once you are happy with your video, you need to export it into a movie file that can be played on other computers, devices, or the web. Remember: Your Nero Video project file (.nvc) is not a video file. It is just a file that contains all the video project information.

Prepare your export

Before you export your video, watch the video one last time to make sure everything is as you want it. Finding mistakes once the video is on Youtube or on a DVD means that you need to go back to Nero Video, and do the whole export and upload process again. Look for:• Are there any mistakes in the text?• Are all the transitions working well and smoothly?• Is the voice loud enough without having to turn up the volume on your speakers to the maxi-

mum? Are there moments where the sound is too loud?

The software exports everything that is on your timeline. If you have additional footage at the end of your timeline that you don’t want to use, or you want to export only a part of your video:

1. Make a right click on the time bar and select Enable Workspace.2. The black marks indicate where your exported video starts and ends.

1

2

If you want to export everything on your timeline, you don’t have to do this adjustment.

Page 26: Nero Video Manual

26

1

Export your video

With this we are now ready to export. 1. Click Export. If you haven’t saved the project yet, Nero Video will ask you to safe your project.

Page 27: Nero Video Manual

27

1. On the export screen, Export video to file lets you export your video to your PC. 2. You have different formatting options. It is not easy to chose the right format. Some formats play

on some devices, some will play on others. For most users the file formats WMV and MP4 will work best. • WMV is a Microsoft format and should work for all the MS Office applications.• MP4 is a broadly used format, and should play on most devices.

3. After choosing your format you can make sub specification in the Profile menu.• For WMV videos: you can chose different qualities. If you have shot your video on HD1080p

(which is the highest definition used on todays TV screens) export with that quality. This way, you make sure that you have the best quality video. If you want to upload a very good quality video onto Youtube, use HD 720p. Youtube accepts all formats and it will play back the video to your audience depending on their internet connection. Youtube provides the possibility to its audience to lower the video resolution if the local internet connection is slow.

• For MP4 videos: chose MPEG4 3GPP for high quality video and uploads to Interlake. You can change the video resolution by clicking on the Configure button. Here you adjust the video size. For videos used on blogs, a resolution of 640*360 pixel (16:9) is also good enough. Chose MPEG4 if you want to upload your video in a lower resolution than 1080p. 720*480 (16:9) is a good resolution for the internet. Chose LC-AAC in the audio section if you want your video to be compatible with Interlake.

4. Chose the name and to which location you want the video to be exported.5. Press Export, Nero Video will start the export process. Depending on the video length and format

this can take a while.
