SUMMER seems to be nearly at an end - and already plans are being made for a big Christmas festival in Neston to mirror the successful event last year. The town council is looking at plans for the festival to give the town centre a big boost following a year of disruption due to the ongoing works.

Congratulations to Neston High School for achieving their best ever A level results. We’ve got some good pictures from the school and details of their forthcoming open day.

ThIEVES broke in to the branch of the Cheshire Building Society in high Street, Neston, last month, and stole a small safe.

MP Andrew Miller visited the Digital Switchover roadshow in Neston Market to see how people are gearing up for the end of analogue.Mr Miller was also keen for the technical experts to sort out the problems of receiving BBC North West and Granada in some parts of the town.The Winter hill transmitter will switch over to digital in November and December.

ThE town centre public toilets at the back of Neston Town hall are being demolished, so if you need to spend a penny, you can use the toilets at the Town hall until the new public toilet at Belmont Cottage Car Park is built.

WorK has begun on the raby road car park, but people can park free of charge at the royal British Legion, on hinderton road, from 8am-6pm Monday to Saturday..

AMoNG the improvement works being carried out in the town centre is a new pedestrian crossing on hinderton road and cycleway over Sytchcroft.

Flt Lt Paul Thelwell, from Neston Air Cadets, completed his fi rst Ironman triathlon in 13 hours, 22 minutes and 54 seconds. To achieve this he swam in open water for 2.4 miles, followed by a 112 mile cycle and then a 26.2 mile run. The ATC meet on a Tues and Thurs evening,

7pm - 9.30pm, at Tanks Field, Church Lane, Little Neston. The next intake evening is the 15th September. Teens welcome.

Do you realise that some doorstep lenders charge up to 545% APR on loans. one finance company, has agreed, according to a report in The Guardian on 28th July, that some of its customers have been charged annualised inter-est rates of up to 545%! They reported profits for the first 6 months of 2009 at £53.1mill, up 3.5%.This prompted the charity `Barnardo`s ` to call on the office of Fair Trading to to investigate the practices of lenders that `prey on the poor`. They cited an example of a loan calculation of £500 over 23 weeks, the total repaid would be £747.50 – an interest rate of 545% APR.There are several `doorstep lender` com-panies with thousands of customers in Cheshire West, calling on people and offering personal loans to people who have few other choices. If you are paying off a loan and you are un-happy with the amount you have to pay back, there is an alternative. West Cheshire Credit Union exists to provide small, lo-cost loans to people who live or work in the West Cheshire area. The most a credit union can charge, by law, is 2% per month, equivalent to 26.8% APR, a massive difference with any current doorstep credit business. `Many of our customers have taken out a loan from us to pay off a doorstep lender, and then they save a lot in future interest payments` said John Dearnley, Marketing Director of West Cheshire Credit Union. If you have a current loan with a doorstep lender, the sooner you join the credit union and pay it off with a lower-cost loan, the more you will save. GUM disease is not only a condition that affects humans and with large numbers of both dogs and cats developing gum disease by the age of three years, preventative dental care has never been more important. Not only can your animal be in a considerable amount of pain in its mouth, but bad teeth also have a direct relationship with other medical conditions including kidney and heart problems which can lead to more serious health conditions. In sim-ple terms, gum disease involves complex bacterial infec-tions. These bacteria can become free in the bloodstream and travel from the mouth to distant organs, potentially creating serious disease at such sites.

Periodontal disease is the most common dental condi-tion affecting dogs and cats. This is where the gums become infected and inflamed and is caused by bacteria present in plaque and calculus (tartar). The problem begins when plaque and calculus are allowed to build up on a pet’s teeth, especially below the gumline. Some of the symptoms that your pet may experience include: bad breath, bleeding and inflammation of the gums, receding gums and loosening of teeth. Your pet may also have difficulty eating its food and may continually “paw” at its mouth.

Preventative treatment to keep the teeth clean is therefore of great importance. As a vet, I would strongly recommend an oral hygiene programme that includes regularly brushing your pets’ teeth with a toothpaste formulated for animals (never use a toothpaste made for humans). Diet is also a major factor in the development of plaque and calculus. Soft or sticky foods should there-fore be avoided, while certain chewing toys are beneficial. are also specially formulated diets with dental benefits available for dogs – please speak to one of our staff for further details.

Like most preventative treatments, it is best to start dental care at an early age. Introduce brushing gradually and begin by rubbing your pet’s teeth and gums with a soft cloth wrapped around a finger. Gradually switch over to a toothbrush designed for pets or to a very soft human toothbrush. Try to make this a pleasant experience for your pet and always praise and reward your pet for its cooperation.

Regular dental check-up visits to your vet are strongly recommended. Hardened tartar should only be removed by your vet, as this requires the use of special instru-ments and equipment. Routine periodontal treatment performed by a veterinarian typically includes ultrasonic scaling, subgingival scaling, and polishing. All dental procedures in pets, including scaling and polishing, are performed under general anaesthesia, however the current state-of-the-art of veterinary anaesthesia is such, that this poses minimal risk in most cases. The adverse effects of bad teeth on the overall health of the animal also greatly outweigh the anaesthetic risk.

NESTON TOWN COUNCIL

Why did the biscuit cry? Because his mum was a wafer so long

AT the third meeting of the town council a wide variety of issues were up for discussion.At the open forum Carrie Spacey said that the Christmas Festival needed to be

organised soon. Pat hughes said that prompt action would be a way of helping local businesses, which faced a year of disruption while the new supermarket and town square were built. The Town Council had submitted to the Boundary Committee a proposal for four

single-member wards: Neston, Little Neston, Parkgate, and riverside with Ness. The council has decided to appoint a Town Clerk. Already 38 people had asked for

details of the paid position. Applications were due by 11th September, with a fi nal decision due on 24th September.Jerry harris, webmaster of www.

neston.org.uk said that the website would disappear in March 2010 unless action is taken by the council. The council agreed that www.neston.org.uk was a good site, came top in Google, and was better than websites set up by other local councils. A working party has been set up to look at the options.The Council are waiting for information

from Cheshire West and Chester Council about Section 106 money which comes from Sainsbury’s to be spent in Neston Town Centre. A planning application from

Sainsbury’s for internally lit signs on their new supermarket was passed to the Planning Committee, who were asked to meet soon. The next meeting is 15th September at

6.30pm in Ness Gardens.

undergone some big changes from its previous incarnation as the Italian rooms. With contemporary flashes in the tableware and now named The Lawns, it boasts stunning views of the hall’s gardens and can comfortably seat approximately 50 people. New head chef Gordon Campbell is already putting his own stamp on the menu and comes to Thornton hall with a big reputation. It is clear that there is great enthusiasm amongst the staff as they embark on an exciting period of change and there is no doubt that the restaurant is heading in the right direction. The restaurant’s midweek

lunch offers a variety of well constructed dishes, using stunningly fresh seasonal ingredients sourced locally. Starters include seared red mullet and pressed terrine of ham hock with piccalilli. The seared red mullet in particular was cooked perfectly and was balanced with a zingy basil pesto. highly recommended for the main course is the exquisite grilled salmon

with sautéed potato and wilted spinach, but our favourite was definitely the pea and spring onion risotto which was deliciously creamy. The peas, in particular, were bursting with freshness as if they had been picked that very morning and cut through the creamy risotto, creating a perfectly balanced dish. restaurant manager

olivier Gamory served two wines, a delightful Chardonnay which perfectly complemented the freshness of the salmon and a red Pinot Noir which went well with the ham hock terrine. olivier explained that the Paul Jacqueson label, which is from the Bourgogne area, is not easy to find in his native France so it is a considerable coup for the restaurant to secure such

an exclusive brand. Thornton hall have

already earned two AA rosettes and the aim is to add another this year. olivier explained that their exciting menu is constantly evolving according to the seasons, so that the vegetables and meats fit in perfectly with the time of year.remarkably, such a

fantastic dining experience does not cost the earth. The midweek lunch menu offers two courses for £13.95 and three courses for just £15.95. The three course Sunday lunch offers a greater range of dishes and costs just £18.45. Even better, from 1st october the restaurant will offer a three course Sunday lunch dinner menu with a bottle of wine for £39 per couple.

The Seasonal Flu vaccination programme is about to begin.I am talking about the annual fl u jabs –

nothing to do with the swine fl u (H1N1)Neston Surgery will be starting our campaign

on 26th September – Yes a Saturday.We will be running regular Saturday clinics as

well as regular weekday clinics.Book early as there are limited stocks and

it is wise to have the vaccination as early as possible.We give at least 1800 per year to our patients. This is not protection from swine fl u it is

the annual fl u vaccination for the over 65’s, patients with diabetes, asthma, chronic liver or kidney disease, or those that have had a stroke or TIA or suffer from chronic heart disease and those with chronic respiratory disease.

A break from fl u - A recent government patient survey revealed

that a large proportion of our patients do not realise that this surgery offers a variety of appointments. Did you know you can book in advance, up

to two weeks, with a doctor – ask for a pre-bookable appointment. half of the appointments are reserved for

this type of appointment - they are popular and because of that you may not get the time and doctor of your choice but you do get an appointment.If you need a review – have a Nurse’s

appointment.

When all the normal appointments for the day are taken we have Triage appointments. The receptionist will take your details and later that day the duty doctor will call you to come in or give you advice. If you are ill you will be seen on the day, if

necessary after hours.

And of course we have Flu Vaccination Appointments – for the vaccination only –

If you have fl u-like symptoms, telephone the surgery, do not come in!

Waiting can be very frustratingWe try to give our patients enough time during

consultations but please be ‘patient’ if the surgery over runs, the patient seeing the doctor may need the extra time. It may be you, your child or parent.

We also offer a service for patients who cannot get to the surgery during opening hours– consultations are held at Ellesmere Port

Hospital – – this service is for booking regular

appointments only.You will see a GP but not a Neston Surgery

Finally on a personal note – Pandemic Flu -I have been very impressed at the way

the local people are dealing with the Swine Flu pandemic and its repercussions. There has been no panic, no hysteria, only a very sensible reaction by everyone. Thank you.The three local surgeries have pandemic

plans in place and we are working together so that a GP service will always be provided for you should things go awry.

LATE SUMMER IN YOUR GARDENGardening by Janet Heath

SEPTEMBEr often provides a blaze of colour before autumn takes hold so if you like bright, bold colours there is a wide range of fl owers to choose from. Shrubs such as hibiscus syriacus also known as the tree hollyhock because of the shape of their

fl owers, are hardy shrubs with fl owers in white, pink and blue. They fl ower for weeks in autumn. Perovskia Blue Spire is a small shrub with branches of tiny electric blue fl owers. It likes a well-drained soil in sun and provides colour well into autumn. Bright, bold colours for a damp soil why not try rudbekia fulgida Goldsturm in yellow and

pair it with Lobelia cardinalis with its purple leaved foliage and red fl owers. Heleniums come in a range of red, yellow, orange and russet colours, are good for the back of a border and give colour for a few weeks especially if dead-headed. Japanese anemones are great ground cover with tall or shorter fl owering stems in white or pink. They also fl ower for weeks, well into autumn. Some delphiniums will fl ower again in September if their fi rst fl ush of fl owers were removed after fl owering. You can dig up and split perennials in autumn and as the soil is still warm they should settle in

well before winter. Try to remember to plant daffodils in September (tulips can wait until october) for fl owering next year. Lawn repairs can be carried out in September. If you have bare patches in the lawn or want to

sow a new lawn, September is a good time for sowing grass seed or laying turf. Scarify to remove moss and apply a weed killer to control those tough perennial weeds. Hedges can have their fi nal trim of the year to leave them neat and tidy over winter. Autumn ripening raspberries such as Autumn Bliss and blackberries will now be in season and

taste wonderful. Some early season apples will be ripening so if you want to grow your own dessert apples, consider Egremont russet, Fiesta, Katy or Greensleeves. They will be ready to eat in September but will not keep for very long, so just pick them from the tree!

PArKGATE man Neil Gyllenship and his colleague Dean Jagger will set off on the voyage of a lifetime to raise money for Claire house Children’s hospice.Their 3,000 mile rowing expedition, as competitors in the Woodvale Challenge, will

start from Tenerife and end, approximately 60 days later, in Antigua, where their families will be waiting to welcome them back onto dry land.Neil’s son, James, is a Year 1 pupil at Parkgate Primary School, and it was with

great excitement that pupils at the school were treated to a presentation by Neil and Dean. They brought with them a boat similar to the one they will be manning on their voyage. Their own, two-hander boat is currently being built especially for them, thanks to

generous sponsorship by Manchester Airport, where both Neil and Dean work in the Fire Service. The boat they brought with them to Parkgate will also be taking part in the race, but will be manned by “row For Girls,” a four-woman team.The entire school listened to a fascinating presentation in the School Hall, finding

out all about the challenges the team will face on their journey, including weather conditions, living on tight rations, sleep deprivation and the sheer hard slog of rowing for hours every day and night.The boat will be equipped with a Global Positioning System (GPS), allowing them

to plot their course, along with a satellite phone that they will use to speak to their families, but just once a week due to the prohibitively high cost of making calls (approximately £30 per minute). Neil and Dean are hoping to raise £100,000 for Claire house by taking part in

a fake tan product to give them a glowing, tanned appearance to take them into the Autumn months. however, blackheads and blocked pores can be a common side effect of using fake tan products, especially if you have oilier skin or visible pores. To improve the appearance of your skin try using of

an exfoliating product, suitable for your skin type, on a regular basis and treat yourself once in a while to a deep cleansing facial treatment with your therapist. I often recommend substituting fake tan with a mineral based bronzing powder, bronzing dust or a tinted moisturiser for your face and keep the fake tan products for your body.
