Executive Director’s update
You will recall we recently had to evacuate thirty residents from our St George aged care facility and airlift them to Mitchelton due to flooding throughout the west. This was a truly great effort involving staff, volunteers, suppliers and the local communities working together into the early hours of the morning to ensure our elderly residents were safe and settled.
Director of Care David Swain and I, together with my wife Janette, recently drove to Chinchilla, Roma, Cunnamulla and St George to meet and thank everyone involved. The trip proved really beneficial for a number of reasons including a greater insight into our work in these communities through our churches and care ministries, and the distances involved; catching up with staff and local leaders; and seeing exciting possibilities for the future. We had dinner with Myles Waldron, minister at Roma and Council member, together with his wife, Roslyn, and local church leaders. We had coffee with Rod Feldhahn and his wife Marion at Chinchilla. We met with the Mayor and Shire CEO at Cunnamulla who passed on their thanks for our work in that community. We similarly met with community representatives at St George who passed on their positive feedback for the aged care and child care services we provide in that community.
Bring light into every community where we have a presence (Matt 5:14 and John 8:12)
Aside from the pleasure of meeting Churches of Christ people and seeing the work that is being done, my excitement came from the possibilities for ministry expansion that emerged from our conversations and observations in each community. For example, we have property in Roma that the local leaders feel could be used in a much better way to support the church‟s mission within the community. Community leaders in Cunnamulla have asked if we might be able to help them with further care ministries there. And in St George, Churches of Christ are major providers of care ministries in the community – touching the lives of many families – yet we do not have a church there! All these opportunities will be followed through in discussions with our people and local community leaders. I also believe there are many other opportunities to better align our care and church resources in each community.
More followers of Jesus
Over past months, the Conference Council has been “Listening and Connecting” to leaders from most of our churches around Queensland – all have been invited. Board and Executive members have similarly been out and about meeting with church and Care leaders around the State. Council member Haydn Sargent (Westside COC) has also conducted many one-on-one interviews. A full day has been set aside on 18
th June to
consider the feedback received. The Council, Board and Executive will meet together to reflect on the progress made since our historic AGM last November; and to agree on the key strategies and responsibilities for the next 12 months, in order to move ahead as one body with all of our efforts aligned to one purpose – more followers of Jesus. We want to be a vibrant church of Christ bringing light into the darkness in every community, through our love, teaching, caring, and discipleship.

Be encouraged
There are some who believe the traditional church has had it. They are feeling lost and don‟t have any real idea of what should take its place. Some are disillusioned as they view the lessons of history that have shown that movements and organisations must reinvent and renew themselves or die.
And yet the spirit of God is always moving amongst his people. Nothing has changed except our attitude. Contrast this depression with the fact that most new ventures start with a couple of people. A couple of people get together to share an idea and work out what they might be able to do. They plan some initial actions and work it out as they go along – reflecting on what works and what doesn‟t – action learning! There is excitement and experimentation. Everyone is committed, and efforts are aligned around a simple focus that everyone supports and understands. Other people become attracted by the enthusiasm and the goal. Most of our churches began this way. I started two businesses this way, and as an elder we grew a church from 30 to 200, and also started a local care service this way.
Some people are sad because their church has dwindled to “30 or so members”. Yet there is always life and hope when two or more gather in the name of Jesus (Matt 18:20). We simply need to renew our minds and start afresh with the intent to follow Jesus and with a heart to bring light into the darkness through love. “Come follow me” said Jesus to Peter and Andrew, “and I will make you fishers of men” (Matt 4:18). There was no five year plan, program schedule, manuals, DVDs, or other churches to copy. They simply left their nets and followed him. Don Everts puts it well in his book Jesus with Dirty Feet:
Jesus was not a Christian. He never asked anyone to be a Christian,
never built a steepled building, never drew up a theological treatise, never took an offering never wore religious garments never incorporated for tax purposes
He simply called people to follow him. That‟s it. That, despite its simplicity, is it. He called people to follow him. It is never more than Jesus‟ call: “follow me” and a response dropping familiar nets
and following in faith, this sandalled Jewish man
It is never more than that. Two thousand years of words can do nothing to the simple, basic reality of Christianity: Those first steps taken by those two brothers. Peter and Andrew‟s theology was as pure as it gets: Jesus said, “follow me”. And we did.

Our visit with Minister Myles Waldron and the Roma leadership at local Chinese restaurant, where we had a good discussion about the church and plans for the future.
Photo of dinner with staff at St George thanking everyone associated with the recent floods for the care and efforts above and beyond the call of duty. It was a great night with some speeches and shared reflections of happenings during the event.
It was encouraging to see Psalm 23 in Chinees on the wall at the Chinese restaurant

Conference Council update
Listen and Connect Tour – two still to come
Gladstone, Saturday 29th May - 10.30pm to 12.30pm followed by light lunch. Our
councillor Ron Hawkins and his minister Lyall Muller have invited me to stay on and
speak to the church on Sunday morning 30th May.
Pine Rivers, Saturday 5th June - We will start with breakfast at 8.30am followed by
our Listen & Connect tour programme. Judith Pallesen and Alan Hermann will also
participate. There are twelve churches invited to attend.
Thanks to Conference Councillors who have attended and helped. With the next two Listen & Connect meetings planned we have a few more councillors represented. A number of leaders have asked to see more councillors from time to time.
The Gold Coast meeting was held on Saturday 15th May and we received a very good response. Please pray for Southport as they move towards their new building.
Our Council member, Haydn Sargent, has been collating the responses from each of the meetings, which will be complete in June. In addition he has been interviewing a significant number of leaders in one-on-one interviews and we will assess those results. These findings will guide us in our strategic goal plans for the future.
Important and far reaching decisions
Mt Isa and our Qld AICF
After extensive investigation and research, Council made the decision that the affiliated AICF church will be asked not to continue payments for the purchase of the Mt Isa Church property. The amount that they have already paid over the last five years of $28.5K will be refunded. They will be asked to consider the refund for use in the Mt Isa region, a key Qld AICF ministry.
Council, Board and Executive Team
These three crucial Conference bodies will meet for a day‟s consultation on Friday 18th June. This will put all Conference leaders on the same page. We will look at the working formation of our emerging Strategic Plan.
Kenmore space for you
Remodelling is taking place at Kenmore. The former Executive President‟s office is now a dedicated Board room, primarily for Council and Board. Alongside that space is the former staff office. This office will become available, on advance booking arrangements, for all church leaders who need access to a desk and phone, or need to meet someone while in Brisbane.
Lord Mayor’s Christmas Carols
The Churches of Christ has been invited to conduct a Worship service on Sunday evening 5th December 2010 at the Brisbane River stage, which is the night after the Lord Mayor‟s Christmas Carols event. We have accepted this invitation and will provide you with more details later.
Thank you Avon
At our CCCA (Churches of Christ Council of Australia) meeting in WA recently, we recognised the 35 years of Avon as Executive Director. He is retiring this year and our CCCA has a succession policy in place. In the photo, Avon and Desley are holding their presentation gift plaque. Our Qld Council has moved a vote of confidence in Avon‟s leadership and encouraged the work of the National body Australian Churches of Christ Indigenous Ministries (ACCIM) as his retirement draws near.

Prayer for Renewal - 28th August 2010
Qld Conference Council has issued a state-wide call to prayer
On 28th August we‟re inviting each Church of Christ in Qld to conduct and
participate in a 12-hour Prayer Vigil at their centre of worship from 6am to 6pm. You are now receiving (by email) the weekly prayer sheet with a list of people and churches for prayer. Barry and Elke Benz are setting it up each week. Please make it available for all members.

Food for thought... Listening and Prayer
The other day, my wife reminded me of something she had apparently told me. I had no recollection of it. Sadly, it‟s not the first time this has happened. And I thought I was a pretty good listener! For heaven‟s sake, I head up a ministry that‟s all about listening!
The inconvenient truth is that all too often we Christians are not very good listeners. Even more unfortunately, perhaps that‟s more true of we conservative evangelicals than some others. We say we listen, we believe we listen, but very often we don‟t!
A couple of years ago I went to a conference of church leaders from another church group like ours. There were sessions on what they could do to make their movement grow, because it wasn‟t. I was new amongst them. The conference went for two days. Do you know, during the meal breaks and free times, I was only involved in two conversations that I didn‟t have to initiate myself. I left before the conference ended, mumbling, “Maybe one big reason why they aren‟t growing is because they are preoccupied with talking to themselves!”
In my current roles inside and outside Churches of Christ, I meet with a lot of pastors. Do you know what? I‟ve discovered that some of them are terrible listeners! Now how can that work – being a pastor and a very poor listener?
Through my years in ministry, I‟ve also met people involved in the pastoral care team in churches who, on pastoral care visits, make the conversation all about themselves after about one minute. Hellooo!
I also happen to think that in evangelism we need to be good listeners too - actually starting with where the other person is at, rather than assuming what they need. Even Jesus who knew a whole lot more than we do asked people what their need was!
Actually, I‟ve concluded that being poor listeners is one of our biggest problems. I read this statement the other day: “Those who are not good at listening to other people are usually also not good at listening to God.” Stop, and think about that! It‟s confronting……but, I fear, true.
It was great to hear about the State-wide Prayer Initiative. I read the purpose statement: “The purpose of the Prayer Initiative is to hear the voice of God, for his directions both individually, and for our movement as a whole.” My heart resonated with this: „Yes!‟ Then I thought: “I wonder how good we are at listening to God.” I think, for most of us, prayer has been telling God things, and asking him for things. We, in Churches of Christ in Queensland, I think, might not be too good at listening prayer. Perhaps there‟s a need for us to humbly acknowledge this.
I want to encourage us to learn more about listening in prayer. To try it more. To learn from others in this be involved in the Prayer Initiative, but as individuals and as groups and congregations, devote some time to listening prayer. Perhaps go away together with others for a day just seeking to listen to God. Let‟s try not to be afraid of doing this. And let‟s be gentle with one another as we humbly learn together.

News from our churches
Southport Church of Christ
How would you feel if you were told the government wanted to demolish your church to build a hospital?
That‟s what happened to Southport Church of Christ. The good news is the government agreed to rebuild a new church to replace theirs.
After a recent Listen and Connect event with Southport and Chambers Flat/Riverwood churches, the Minister, Ross Pelling, plus Elders and Deacons invited President of Conference Bruce Armstrong to visit the site, see the progress and pray with them asking God‟s blessing and help.
Southport is blessed with a very talented Board of Management and they have been eating, breathing and sleeping the „new church‟ for the past few months. Their prayers are being answered and the church will be a wonderful home for a dynamic church family.
God bless you Southport.

Whitehill Church of Christ
40 Days of Love
During February and March, Whitehill Church of Christ participated in 40 Days of Love - a spiritual growth journey where we studied and practised Jesus relationship principles. This involved a six week series of Bible studies in small groups, our Whitehill Kids Program, 40 daily readings and weekly sermons.
It was a great time of blessing to people as individuals and as a church community as we read through Tom Holladay‟s book, “The Relationship Principles of Jesus”. During 40 Days of Love, we had 24 small groups and a new depth of love was brought into people‟s lives, families, marriages, friendships and our church community as we learnt about how God intended relationships to be.
Whitehill Church of Christ commends the 40 Days of Love. If your church needs to grow in love, why not do this series? Whitehill has 80 “Relationship Principles of Jesus” books, eight DVDs and 80 bookmarks left over. We are willing to sell them to a church at a reduced cost of $100 per box. Each box includes 10 books, the small group DVD and 10 bookmarks. This offer is available until 20
th June, 2010.
Please call Whitehill Church of Christ on 3288 0186 or email [email protected].

Churches of Christ Care
Volunteers celebrated
National Volunteer Week provided the opportunity for many of Churches of Christ Care‟s service to thank their dedicated volunteers for their support.
National Volunteer Week was held from 10-16 May and each of Care‟s 700 plus volunteers were thanked and presented with a gift and certificate of appreciation. The events were also used to recognise volunteer years of service achievements.
Services planned their own celebration events including luncheons, barbeques, wine and cheese evenings and a poetry and pamper day. We thanked each volunteer for their dedicated and tireless efforts in sharing their lives and time with the community.
Our volunteers play an important role in our services. They help out in a variety of ways and each contribute to enriching the lives of our residents and clients. In our aged care services, volunteers assist with bus outings, activities, transport, meal times, and by providing companionship to residents.
Interstate possibility
Churches of Christ Care (Queensland) and Churches of Christ Community Care (Victoria/Tasmania) are currently investigating the possibility of merging their Aged Care and Retirement Living services. Community Care (Vic/Tas) has four residential aged care services around Melbourne, providing care to over 300 residents.
They also manage approximately 60 retirement living units.
In this day and age, especially given the costs of service delivery, size is
everything. Combining the Vic/Tas services with those of Queensland would give greater economies of scale, and thereby assist in the ongoing viability of services in Victoria.
Most importantly, by keeping services within the fold of Churches of Christ, the ministry of the church in that area of need can continue.
We have a long way to go before we can confirm any details, including whether the merger proceeds. We will provide updates as decisions are made.

Heritage celebrated at Maryborough Family Day Care
Recently children from the Maryborough Family Day Care playgroup celebrated Maryborough‟s heritage with a visit to the Old Maryborough Township and took part in old fashioned games, songs and stories. The children were also visited by the local Town Crier and Mary Heritage, who were dressed in period costumes.
The kids loved the opportunity to learn about some of the history of the town but also enjoyed the simpler things about the outing such as running down hills and picking flowers!
Property & Development
New housing development meets local need
Churches of Christ Care celebrated the official opening of their new housing development at Spring Hill on Wednesday. The event was attended by the Minister for Community Services and Housing, Karen Struthers; State Member for Brisbane Central Grace Grace; and Councillor David Hinchliffe.
Tenants in the thirty-five units moved in earlier in the year and are now enjoying stable and secure accommodation. The new units are a mix of one-bedroom and studio units and were developed with the support of funding from the Queensland State Government.
This development meets a vital need in the community to support those who are struggling with the rising costs of living and may be disadvantaged in the housing market.
These new units are so much more than just bricks and mortar. They mean that a person doesn‟t have to couch surf, sleep rough or be subject to overcrowded accommodation, or unreasonable rent conditions. They mean the person can take their mind off their accommodation so they can get a good night‟s sleep, look after their health, or pursue voluntary or paid work. It‟s about individuals focusing on achieving their own potential.
As a not-for-profit organisation, Churches of Christ Care seeks to support people to achieve their goals.

Church Equipping
Queensland: Beautiful one day, goodbye the next
Frank and Sue Sanders are now in Vanuatu. Their commissioning service was held at Whitehill Church of Christ, and there was a sense of excitement that God was sending them out for his work. They have spent time settling in on Pntecost Island in Vanuatu, living in a guesthouse close by until their own island-style house is complete. They have also had the experience of attending the Vanuatu Churches of Christ Conference. No doubt they have discovered that wooden seats get very hard when you sit on them for hours at a time! Pray for them as they continue to settle in and get to know the local people.
They are not the only ones who will set out from Queensland on mission this year. A combined Gladstone/Westside/Fernvale/Withcott team will set out for Gambule, Maewo Island, Vanuatu on 15 July. They will be
taking part in a variety of ministries, including teaching English at the local high school, making music, and a prayer ministry. Gambule is a remote part of Vanuatu, and very needy spiritually. Please pray for them. They will need fine
weather so that the plane can land there (and take-off again the following week!). Pray for spiritual protection, and that their work will make a difference.
A short time later, a work party headed up by Allan Cox, will be heading over to Londua School on Ambae Island, Vanuatu. They
will be continuing the work of bringing the school into better repair. Allan assures us he can find jobs for anyone with any kind of
skills. He is an expert at putting people to work! We are thankful for all the time and resources Allan and his wife Lyn have put into
restoring Londua.
Finally, for a change of venue, a team from the Toowoomba North Church of Christ will be flying to Papua New Guinea in
September. They will have to be fit, because they expect to have to undertake a difficult walk in from the closest airport to Gandep Bible College. Not for the faint-hearted! However, we expect they
will be greatly blessed as they interact with the students there, and bless the students in turn with their interest and love.
Have you ever thought about going on a short-term mission? Has your church thought about it, but put it in the too hard basket? GMP is keen to help churches plan mission trips to their partners overseas. A number of churches are already
considering sending teams next year. If you would like to experience partnering with our friends overseas, and do something which will quite likely change your perspective forever, give me a ring on 0407 951 642. I will be happy to talk
with you and let you know what is possible.

Child labour in India
What's going on with the making of sports balls in India? Children as young as six, mostly girls, are spending their precious childhoods stitching soccer balls full time, instead of getting an education. Over the past ten years, manufacturers have been pressed to clean up their supply chains for international markets. Revelations of child labour being used to produce match-grade soccer balls resulted in increased scrutiny. This has led to improved conditions for many workers who supply soccer balls for international sales. However, conditions in the domestic market stand as a reminder of why we need to keep our eye on the ball. World Vision has launched a campaign to try and end child labour. Visit their website www.worldvision.com.au to find out more.
