Micronization – Grinding and Dispersing for Pharmaceutical Applications

Pharmaceutical manufacturing processes require the utmost care and precision - from initial laboratory testing to full-scale production. In this tightly regulated industry, every step in the production process demands precision pharmaceutical-grade machinery.

NETZSCH understands special phar-maceutical requirements and respects your confi dentiality. When working with high-quality, high-cost mate-rials, there is no room for error or loss. There are standards: safe, cost-eff ec-tive, easy-to-clean equipment that provides precise, repeatable results with every batch.

As the global leader in particle-reduc-tion machinery, NETZSCH off ers the technology and machinery to provide true drug development solutions. We draw resources from our specialized Pharmaceutical Competency Center, 130 years of engineering experi-ence and NETZSCH locations world-wide. We are experienced in every aspect of pharmaceutical machinery testing, certifi cation, validation and documentation.

More than 90% of drugs approved since 1995 have poor solubility, poor permeability, or both. Drug perfor-mance can be improved by reducing the particle size and at the same time increasing the specifi c surface area of the active pharmaceutical ingredients (API).

Therefore, however an API is admin-istered - in tablet, capsule, powder or liquid form –small particle sizes off er exciting advantages for pharmaceuti-cals. Known benefi ts include improved dissolution rate, increased bioavail-ability and higher activity, leading to lower dosages and a lower risk of side eff ects for the patient.

The Advantage of Ultra Fine Particles

NETZSCH grinding technology leads the way, expanding the new nano frontier for pharmaceuticals. DELTAVITA® bead mills are the top choice in high-tech applications, specifi cally designed for the pharmaceutical market.

NETZSCH provides industry-leading bead mills for consistent sized particle reductions, as well as dispersion mills for uniform dispersion of particles in formulation. Our engineers designed the DELTAVITA® grinding and disper-sion system specifi cally to achieve very narrow nanometer particle-size distri-butions with superior repeatability.

Nanotechnology Leadership & Technology

Advantages of Milling API’sNETZSCH Competency

With almost half of new chemical enti-ties (NCEs) impaired by poor water solubility, ultra fi ne particles are the solution. Reducing drug particles to nano size increases their surface area and subsequent solubility dramatically. Nanoparticles are also used in diag-nostic applications.

NETZSCH works with pharmaceutical companies to turn such promise into reality – for both healthcare and busi-ness advantages.

The NETZSCH engineered DELTAVITA® mill, based on proven ZETA® Mill tech-nology, stands out in the world of ultra-fi ne nanoparticle applications. Through the effi cient use of energy, high fl ow-rate, multiple-pass grinding strategy, DELTAVITA® mills achieve excel-lent repeatability as well as homoge-neous dispersion. DELTAVITA® mills are fast, extremely versatile and designed to produce a very narrow range of ultra fi ne parti-cles in a homogeneous formulation. In the time it takes for an ordinary mill to complete one pass, DELTAVITA® mills cycle through as many as 10 passes. They are time, cost and energy effi -cient. Specifi c energy reductions of up to 30% can be realized.

The DELTAVITA® process eliminates excessive heat buildup and output blockage that plagues screen sepa-ration systems in other fi ne-bead

NETZSCH Vacuum De-Aerator

The MAXSHEAR Inline Disperser is an effi cient, low maintenance, low cost unit compact enough to be used at any point in the process. Its extremely high shear performance and powerful dispersing action generate the best premix possible. The MAXSHEAR’s unique single processing stage reduces down-stream work and eliminates the product bypassing typical of most single stage units. Applications for the MAXSHEAR include pharmaceutical and cosmetic formulations.

MAXSHEAR Inline Disperser

In the NETZSCH Vacuum De-Aerator, micronized gases are removed from fl uids with a wide range of viscosi-ties. By means of the VTR Principle (vacuum - thin-fi lm - rotary process), it is possible to process products from topical gels and creams, for example, to a wide variety of free-fl owing compounds. The throughput is product and viscosity dependent and can range from 500 kg/h to 4 000 kg/h. This machine can be used to de-gas both small quantities, from interchangeable tanks in batch operation, and large batches in continuous operation.
