Fires In Vehicles - FIVE 2016

Fires in vehicles pose a significant threat to life and property. Recently, fires in buses have been in focus but fires in trains are also high on the agenda due to the new European train standard. At the same time new fuels and electrical vehicles are emerging together with new lighter materials in response to our need for sustainable transport alternatives. Such alternative vehicles introduce new fire challenges that need to be accounted for.

SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden has instigated the Inter-national Conference on Fires In Vehicles (FIVE). The objective of this conference is to exchange knowledge concerning fires in vehicles, including both road and rail vehicles. In recognition of the fact that many of the fire problems faced by these vehicles are the same, the solutions to them can also be similar.

FIVE has become an important meeting place for fire researchers, op-erators, vehicle manufacturers, authorities, insurance companies and other stakeholders interested in vehicle fire safety. The conference was first held in Gothenburg (2010), next in Chicago (2012), next in Berlin (2014) and is now held in Baltimore.

He has been the Swedish fire expert on several UNECE-meetings and is a member of the Truck and Bus Safety Committee at the American Transportation Research Board. As a former bus driver, he has for a long time carried a special interest in improving bus fire safety.

FIVE 2016 presents a broad range of interesting aspects all related to fires and vehicles such as: Fire statistics; Fire development; Ignition sources; Material development; Mitigation means including detection and suppression; Case studies; First responder strategies and Fire risks in vehicles with alternative fuels or alternative drives. It includes all types of vehicles such as passenger cars, buses and coaches, trains, trucks, etc. These aspects are covered both in speaker sessions and posters. The conference ends with a technical visit.

Each day is opened by invited Keynote Speakers, leaders in their field, providing an overview of their topic of expertise as an introduction to the themes of the day.

the vulcan system – vehicle fire protection at a new level

Holder of SP Certificate

Bus and coach fires are a global concern. According to reported bus fire statistics, around 1% of all buses are involved in some form of fire incident each year. This can be prevented by raising the existing standards of

vehicle fire protection to a new level. Vulcan fire Suppression System for buses and coaches is capable of automatically and intelligently give a proportional response to any fire scenario.

Fully automated response systems for buses and coaches. Combining heat and aspirating

smoke detectors with fire extinguishing.

When it comes to safeguarding passengers’ lives as well as equipment, LEHAVOT’s systems provide comprehensive fire protection coverage with excellent firefighting performance, reliability and low lifecycle cost.

Fires on public transportation are best fought with an effective automatic fire suppression solution to rapidly eliminate or minimize fire events and reduce injury potential.

Many fire events in trains and buses originate in the engine compartment, which is usually out of the driver’s sight.

Lehavot’s system protects vehicles from fires caused by fuel / hydraulic fluid leakages or electric short circuits and alerts the driver of any fire or dramatic rise in temperature by sending a clear indication of the fire event to the driver’s main operation panel (dashboard). The system detects and suppresses the fire before it spreads, ensuring minimal damage and maximum protection.

BUSShield is Lehavot’s reliable, cost-effective, state-of-the-art bus fire detection and suppression system for engine and battery compartments. It meets the Israeli bus fire protection standard – currently the only such standard in the world.
