ECONOMICS

1. China’s crony capitalism: the dynamics of regime decay. / Pei, Minxin. 2016. Cambridge:

Harvard University Press

Call No - 330.148(510) PEI P6 Acc No - 50765

This book traces the origin of China's crony capitalism to a set of incomplete

reforms of property rights in the post-Tiananmen era that have decentralized the

control of public property without clarifying its ownership. Based on illuminating

details from 260 well-researched cases of corruption involved multiple officials

and businessmen since the early 1990s, this study investigates how collusion

among elites has penetrated the vital sectors of the Chinese political and

economic systems. These cases reveal a well-developed illicit market for power

inside the Chinese party-state, in which bribes and official appointments are

surreptitiously but routinely traded.

5. Great leveler: violence and the history of inequality from the stone age to the twenty-first

century. / Scheidel, Walter. 2017. Princeton: Princeton University Press

Call No - 301.18 SCH P7 Acc No – 50066

Are mass violence and catastrophes the only forces that can seriously decrease

economic inequality? To judge by thousands of years of history, the answer is

yes. Tracing the global history of inequality from the Stone Age to today, the

author shows that inequality never dies peacefully. Inequality declines when

carnage and disaster strike and increases when peace and stability return. This

book is the first book to chart the crucial role of violent shocks in reducing

inequality over the full sweep of human history around the world. Ever since

humans began to farm, herd livestock, and pass on their assets to future

generations, economic inequality has been a defining feature of civilization. Over

thousands of years, only violent events have significantly lessened inequality. The 'Four Horsemen' of

leveling--mass-mobilization warfare, transformative revolutions, state collapse, and catastrophic plagues--

have repeatedly destroyed the fortunes of the rich. The author identifies and examines these processes,

from the crises of the earliest civilizations to the cataclysmic world wars and communist revolutions of

the twentieth century. Today, the violence that reduced inequality in the past seems to have diminished,

and that is a good thing. But it casts serious doubt on the prospects for a more equal future.

Call No - 332.453(510) SUB P7 Acc No - 50820

In this book, the author introduces readers to China's monetary system, mapping

its evolution over the past century and, particularly, its transformation since Deng

Xiaoping took power in 1978. Author revisits the policies that fostered the

country's economic rise while at the same time purposefully creating a currency

of little use beyond China's borders. She shows the key to understanding China's

economic predicament lies in past and future strategies for the Renminbi. The

financial turbulence following the global crisis of 2008, coupled with China's

ambitions as a global creditor and chief economic power, has forced the nation to

reckon with the limited international circulation of the Renminbi.

4. Models of innovation: the history of an idea. / Godin, Benoit. 2017. Cambridge: MIT

Press

Call No - 6.001.5 GOD P7 Acc No - 50818

Models abound in science, technology, and society (STS) studies and in science,

technology, and innovation (STI) studies. They are continually being invented,

with one author developing many versions of the same model over time. At the

same time, models are regularly criticized. Such is the case with the most

influential model in STS-STI: the linear model of innovation. In this book, the

author examines the emergence and diffusion of the three most important

conceptual models of innovation from the early twentieth century to the late

1980s: stage models, linear models, and holistic models. The author first traces

the history of the models of innovation constructed during this period,

considering why these particular models came into being and what use was made of them. He then

rethinks and debunks the historical narratives of models developed by theorists of innovation. The author

documents a greater diversity of thinkers and schools than in the conventional account, tracing a

genealogy of models beginning with anthropologists, industrialists, and practitioners in the first half of the

twentieth century to their later formalization in STS-STI. The author suggests that a model is a

conceptualization, which could be narrative, or a set of conceptualizations, or a paradigmatic perspective,

often in pictorial form and reduced discursively to a simplified representation of reality. Why are so many

things called models? The author claims that model has a rhetorical function. First, a model is a symbol of

“scientificity.” Second, a model travels easily among scholars and policy makers. Calling a

conceptualization or narrative or perspective a model facilitates its propagation.

Boston: Harvard Business Review Pres

Call No - 6.001.5 ROB P7 Acc No – 50824

This low-risk, high-reward strategy is an approach to innovation that all

company leaders should understand so that they recognize it when their

competitors practice it, and apply it when it will give them a competitive

advantage. This distinctive approach has three key elements: It consists of

creating a family of complementary innovations around a product or service, all

of which work together to make that product more appealing and competitive;

these complementary innovations form a system designed to carry out a single

strategy or promise; crucially, unlike disruptive or radical innovation, innovating

30. Psychology of emotion. - 2nd. ed. /. Niedenthal, Paula M. 2017. New York: Routledge

Call No - 159.942 NIE P7 Acc No - 50881

The psychology of emotion has grown to become its own field of study. Because

the study of emotion draws inspiration from areas of science outside of

psychology, including neuroscience, psychiatry, biology, genetics, computer

science, zoology, and behavioral economics, the field is now often called emotion

science or affective science. A subfield of affective science is affective

neuroscience, the study of the emotional brain. This book reviews both theory

and methods in emotion science, discussing findings about the brain; the function,

expression, and regulation of emotion; similarities and differences due to gender

and culture; the relationship between emotion and cognition; and emotion

processes in groups. Comprehensive in its scope yet eminently readable, this

book serves as an ideal introduction for undergraduate students to the scientific study of emotion. It

features effective learning devices such as bolded key terms, developmental details boxes, learning links,

tables, graphs, and illustrations. In addition, a robust companion website offers instructor resources.

Cyberterrorism in the 21st century is now one of the greatest threats to global

security and information. It transcends national borders (and by extension

national legal systems), making it difficult for individual countries to formulate a

cohesive defence plan against it. The world is yet to see any serious acts of

cyberterrorism targeting multiple countries at once, but there's a need for

countries to develop legal precedents to deal with this should it happen. This

book investigates cyberterrorism in terms of the conventions and legislation

developed in response to the growing need to protect the digital infrastructure and

information of citizens, companies and governments. It looks at the challenges

faced by international organisations in first defining then responding and curbing

cyberterrorism. Following this is analysis of legal provisions, with case studies of enforcement and of

jurisdiction of these provisions. In this book all aspects of cyberterrorism are considered, from initial

infringement to eventual prosecution, this book provides recommendations and guidance to law-based

post-graduates and professionals working on digital crime, and to those interested in national and

international legal legislation against it.

This book addresses the needs of individual users at work and at home. This

book covers personal cybersecurity for all modes of personal computing whether

on consumer-acquired or company-issued devices: desktop PCs, laptops, mobile

devices, smart TVs, WiFi and Bluetooth peripherals, and IoT objects embedded

with network-connected sensors. In all these modes, the frequency, intensity, and

sophistication of cyberattacks that put individual users at risk are increasing in

step with accelerating mutation rates of malware and cybercriminal delivery

systems. Traditional anti-virus software and personal firewalls no longer suffice

to guarantee personal security. Users who neglect to learn and adopt the new

ways of protecting themselves in their work and private environments put

themselves, their associates, and their companies at risk of inconvenience, violation, reputational damage,

data corruption, data theft, system degradation, system destruction, financial harm, and criminal disaster.

This book shows what actions to take to limit the harm and recover from the damage.

sciences and rehabilitates its reputation as a powerful research method. Drawing

in part on his own undercover research into the night-time economy of bouncers,

the author explores the roots and evolution of covert research; his deft treatment

of the fear and fascination within furtive fieldwork is grounded in the practicality

of the methods and tools needed to conduct quality research in the field. Packed

with learning-by-example tips, this book shows that with critical imagination and

proper ethical foundations, covert research could be a great addition to your methodological toolkit.

4. Craft of political research. - 10th. / Shively, W. Phillips. 2017. New York: Routledge

Call No - 3.001.5 SHI P Acc No – 750769

This book is a non-technical introduction to research design and analysis in

political science, emphasizing the choices we make when we design a research

project and analyze its results. The book’s approach centers on asking an

interesting research question, and then designing inquiry into the question so as to

eliminate as many alternative explanations as possible. How do we develop

theory, and what constitutes a good research question? How do we develop

measures and gather evidence to answer a question? How do we analyze our

findings? Students will be introduced to such topics as multidimensional

concepts, levels of measurement, validity, reliability, random and non-random

measurement error, sampling, case selection, causality, experimental and quasi-experimental design,

statistical inference, and regression and correlation analysis. Throughout, the emphasis is on

understanding the 'back story' of analysis — why do we measure in a particular way, why do we choose

one design as against another, why do we conduct our analysis as we do. Emphasizing the internal logic

of research methods and the collaborative nature of the research process, the greatest strength of the book

is its clarity and the large range of political science examples it provides. It works at a conceptual level,

seeking an understanding of the principles that underlie techniques and the reasons that we choose them.

11. Social research: paradigms in action. / Blaikie, Norman. 2017. Cambridge: Polity Press

Call No - 3.001.5 BLA P7 Acc No - 50832

This book explains the central role that research paradigms play in the design

and conduct of social research. The authors argue that social research should not

just describe or confirm a social problem but should seek to find an explanation

for it - and to do so requires research with ‘eyes philosophically wide open’.

Important philosophical and practice elements of three widely recognized

paradigms - Neo-Positive, Interpretive and Critical Realist - are carefully

elaborated and their use in action illustrated with detailed examples. The authors

show that the philosophical assumptions of a chosen paradigm must match those

embedded in a characterization of a research problem and its context. This

paradigm orientation is shown to be fundamental to appropriately framing a problem, formulating

research questions, deciding on a logic of inquiry and selecting and using methods to investigate it.

Ultimately, an appropriate paradigm orientation to social research provides a dispassionate, rigorous and

effective basis for the production of new social scientific knowledge. Following on from Blaikie’s

Approaches to Social Enquiry and Designing Social Research, this book will be invaluable to upper-level

and research students, their lecturers and supervisors, and researchers across the social sciences.

An energy revolution is under way with far-reaching consequences for nations,

companies, and the way we address climate change Low oil prices are sending

shockwaves through the global economy, and longtime industry observer Dieter

Helm explains how this and other shifts are the harbingers of a coming energy

revolution and how the fossil fuel age will come to an end. Surveying recent

surges in technological innovations, Helm's provocative new book documents

how the global move toward the internet-of-things will inexorably reduce the

demand for oil, gas, and renewables-and prove more effective than current efforts

to avert climate change.

intelligence, language, teaching, and cooperation - are not adaptive responses to

predators or disease, or other external conditions. He traces our rise from

scavenger apes in prehistory to modern humans able to design iPhones, dance the

41

In this book, the author provides a sophisticated, revisionist introduction to the

problem of knowledge in Western philosophy. Modern and contemporary

accounts of epistemology tend to focus on limited questions of knowledge and

skepticism, such as how we can know the external world, other minds, the past

through memory, the future through induction, or the world’s depth and structure

through inference. This book steps back for a better view of the more general

issues posed by the ancient Greek Pyrrhonists. Returning to and illuminating this

older, broader epistemological tradition, the author develops an original account

of the subject, giving it substance not with Cartesian theology but with science

and common sense. Descartes is a part of this ancient tradition, but he goes beyond it by considering not

just whether knowledge is possible at all but also how we can properly attain it. In Cartesian

epistemology, the author finds a virtue-theoretic account, one that he extends beyond the Cartesian

context. Once epistemology is viewed in this light, many of its problems can be solved or fall away. The

result is an important reevaluation of epistemology that will be essential reading for students and teachers.

5. Explanation of social action. / Martin, John Levi. 2011. Oxford: Oxford University Press

Call No - 301.18 MAR P1 Acc No - 50757

This book is a critique of the conventional understanding of methods of

explanation in the social sciences. It argues that any scientific approach to

explanation must build on the phenomenological experience of actors.

Conventional understanding of what it means to 'explain' something in the social

sciences provokes unnecessary confusion and conflict, and indeed is often based

more on analysts' imaginations than actors' realities. It lays out a sustained

critique of this understanding, pointing out that the root of the problem is an

attempt to counterpose two radically different types of answers to the question of

why someone did a certain thing - first person responses and third person ones.

The author illustrates how this tendency is epitomized in attempts to explain

human action in 'causal' terms.

In spite of centuries of campaigning, women still earn less and have less power

than men. Equality remains a goal not yet reached. In this incisive account of

why this is the case, the author argues that optimistic narratives of progress and

emancipation have served to obscure long-term structural inequalities between

women and men, structural inequalities which are not only about gender but also

about general social inequality. In widening the lenses on the persistence of

gender inequality, the author shows how in contemporary debates about social

inequality gender is often ignored, implicitly side-lining critical aspects of

relations between women and men. This book attempts to join up some of the

dots in the ways that we think about both social and gender inequality, and offers

a new perspective on a problem that still demands society's full attention.

This book is about a compelling collaboration between two men who have the

dimensions of great literary figures. They became heroes in the university and on

the battlefield--both had important careers in the Israeli military--and their

research was deeply linked to their extraordinary life experiences. Amos Tversky

was a brilliant, self-confident warrior and extrovert, the center of rapt attention in

any room; Kahneman, a fugitive from the Nazis in his childhood, was an introvert

whose questing self-doubt was the seedbed of his ideas. They became one of the

greatest partnerships in the history of science, working together so closely that

they couldn't remember whose brain originated which ideas, or who should claim

credit. They flipped a coin to decide the lead authorship on the first paper they wrote, and simply

alternated thereafter. This story about the workings of the human mind is explored through the

personalities of two fascinating individuals so fundamentally different from each other that they seem

unlikely friends or colleagues. In the process they may well have changed, for good, mankind's view of its

own mind.
