Yes! Summer is here and it welcomes our programme animated by a South Asian cultural wave of art. Our exhibitions create an important space for reflection, taking us from ancient to contemporary worlds, exploring spirituality, colonialism, legacy and representing unheard voices. We present leading Indian contemporary artists Nikhil Chopra and Munir Kabani featuring Ustad Bahauddin Dagar, Madhavi Gore and Sajan Mani, in a poetic new film installation, Bhairav, exploring the colonial landscape of Goa. The artists open the exhibition with a series of live art performances and a full panel discussion. NAE’s academic-artist in residence, Tasawar Bashir presents Dam Pani, commemorating Sufi-Qawwali musical legend Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, 20 years after his passing, through an
immersive and mesmerising sound sculpture installation. Our Here, There & Everywhere India – UK partnership continues throughout the year, with Avani Tanya's residency at the V&A with Delfina Foundation, and look out for Nottingham Mela this summer. We invite you to join our new Supporters' Scheme, offering you exclusive extras while supporting our charitable work. We continue to champion creative and digital businesses through Real Creative Futures, and younger creatives can get involved with our vibrant family/young people’s programme over the holiday season.
Savour this South Asian summer and join us as we keep the creative diya burning brightly. We look forward to seeing you...

NAE’s South Asian season begins with two new exhibitions in our Main Gallery: Bhairav and Dam Pani. At the centre of Bhairav is a new film by Munir Kabani and Nikhil Chopra, featuring Sajan Mani, Madhavi Gore and musician Ustad Bahauddin Dagar. Bhairav, from which the film takes its name, is considered to be one of the most ancient raags in Hindustani classical music, typically played in the early hours welcoming the dawn. Here, the raag sets the tone of the work, as the film reveals the architecture and landscape of Goa through precolonial, colonial and postcolonial eras. The work explores man’s relationship with the earth, spirituality and the passage of time, also highlighting issues of marginalisation.

Qawwalis, the devotional music of the Sufis, are known to transport listeners through their sacred sounds, and the voice of the Qawwāl singer is believed to transmit spiritual energy. In Dam Pani, Bashir experiments with abstraction to explore the essence of this spiritual Sufi experience. By focussing on just one utterance by Khan, and playing this sound through water to visualise patterns on the surface, Bashir creates an intense, meditative space that immerses the audience in both the sound and sight of Khan’s energy.
Bhairav is newly commissioned with the artists, New Art Exchange and Chatterjee and Lal. Bhairav and Dam Pani are part of Here, There & Everywhere, supported through funding by Arts Council England and British Council as part of a national project, Reimagine India. (see page 17).
Starting on Friday 14 July and concluding in the early hours of Saturday morning, a number of live art performances will take place to complete the installation of Bhairav. A durational drawing performance by Chopra will result in a large-scale work that will remain part of the exhibition until its close. Also performing will be Sajan Mani, known for his work around the politics of skin and Madhavi Gore ‘replacing’ the mannequin in a local shop window. Join us for a rare and majestic midnight music performance by rudra veena player, Ustad Bahauddin Dagar (see page 9).
Alongside Bhairav, we also present new work by Tasawar Bashir in collaboration with Brian Duffy. Titled Dam Pani, meaning ‘Divine Breath’, the installation pays homage to the late, great, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (1948-1997), the Pakistani Qawwali singer celebrated for his vocal power and spiritual energy.

INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN STUDENT PROJECT
CENTRAL GALLERY11 July – 24 September 2017

Altered Landscapes is a multimedia installation of video, photography, and audio by Juan delGado. The artist captures traces of these refugees’ existence: the fleeting moments and marks left on the land as they pass through to find safety.
Juan delGado has been awarded an INSIDE commission from New Art Exchange and DASH. INSIDE is a Disability Arts commissioning programme led by DASH with funding from Arts Council England. Altered Landscapes is supported by Arts Council England and the Spanish Embassy Office for Cultural and Scientific Affairs in London.

Not My Cup of Tea A TEST OF BRITISH VALUES
MEZZANINE GALLERY11 August – 1 October 2017
A show of newly commissioned works by award winning artist, Sarah Maple, runner-up of NAE’s 2012 exhibition, Culture Cloud. Maple is known for her bold, brave, mischievous and occasionally controversial artworks that challenge our perceptions of cultural and religious identities. Much of Maple's inspiration originates from being brought up as a Muslim, with parents of mixed religious and cultural backgrounds. Not My Cup of Tea explores timely questions around integration, the meaning of ‘British Values’ and the current worldview of Islam. Through satirical humour, the exhibition addresses the sharp rise of xenophobia and Islamophobia since 2016. as well as how certain communities are othered and alienated in political narratives, thus effecting public opinion.
