OCTOBER 2015 S aint Peter’s University Hospital has opened an outpatient center on Easton Avenue in New Brunswick dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cancer. The Saint Peter’s Cancer Center is a joint venture between Saint Peter’s Healthcare System and Sovereign Health Cancer Care, a provider of comprehensive medical services in the tri-state area. Located at 215 Easton Avenue across the street from Saint Peter’s Center for Ambulatory Resources and just down the block from the hospital’s Department of Radiation Oncology, the Center expands the footprint of cancer treatment services for adults. Breast, prostate, and other forms of cancer will be treated here. Gopal Desai, MD, chairman of the Radiation Oncology Department at Saint Peter’s University Hospital, serves as medical director of the new Saint Peter’s Cancer Center. Offering the most advanced technology such as CyberKnife ® treatment and robotic surgery using the da Vinci ® system, and the latest medications and surgical procedures available, Saint Peter’s University Hospital is already nationally recognized for quality care, leading innovations, and personalized cancer treatment care. Saint Peter’s cancer programs are accredited by the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer. “At Saint Peter’s we are always focused on providing the highest quality of care available to our patients today,” says Scarlett Szymanski, director of Ambulatory Oncology Services, Saint Peter’s Breast Center and Radiology. “Our new Center is a venture that will maximize the resources we have to continue to make this possible.” New Technology Still available on the hospital campus will be cancer services such as CyberKnife ® treatment and infusion chemotherapy services. The new facility will soon be home to a new linear accelerator – the Elekta Infinity™ Radiation Treatment System. With its ability to more precisely target a tumor for radiation treatment using the latest sophisticated computer programming, the Elekta Infinity Radiation Treatment System improves accuracy of treatment, minimizes the effects of radiation treatment, spares healthy tissue, and reduces the treatment time required for radiotherapy sessions to five minutes or less making it easier for the patient to remain still during treatment. “Continuous rotational arc-based therapy (volumetric modulated arc therapy or VMAT) expedites treatment times and shortens them significantly,” says Dr. Desai. “This provides patient comfort as they go through therapy. The advent of on-board imaging and VMAT technology makes complex treatments more precise in select cancers.” In addition to providing more accurate and timely treatment, this new technology improves the process for providing treatment. To determine the precise location of tumors and normal surrounding tissues, traditional radiotherapy requires imaging studies to be done several days before treatment. With Elekta Infinity, imaging can take place at the time and place of treatment without slow- ing down the treatment process, so that the patient can receive the treatment needed. Treatment Programs Highly trained physicians and staff affiliated with Saint Peter’s provide the highest quality of care through the following specialized programs: Breast Cancer Colorectal Cancer Head and Neck Cancer CyberKnife ® Radiosurgery Treatment Gynecologic Oncology Radiation Oncology • Lung Cancer Experienced radiation oncologists in the Saint Peter’s CyberKnife ® Radiosurgery program use the latest techniques and technology to care for patients who have hard-to-treat cancers. Saint Peter’s cancer program also includes the Saint Peter’s Breast Center, part of the Saint Peter’s Physician Associates network. Saint Peter’s Breast Center was central New Jersey’s first facility specializing in breast care to be accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers and just recently achieved its third accreditation. Saint Peter’s Women’s Imaging Center, located in the Center for Ambulatory Resources, is accredited by the American College of Radiology as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence—not just for mammography, but also for stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound and ultrasound-guided breast biopsy. Decades of Expert Care Saint Peter’s University Hospital and The Children’s Hospital at Saint Peter’s University Hospital have been at the forefront of cancer care offering expert care for more than 40 years. Saint Peter’s cares for children with cancer from around the world as the only children’s hospital in Central Jersey selected to collaborate with ProCure, the only center in the New York metropolitan area that provides an advanced form of radiation called proton therapy to children and adults. The Saint Peter’s team works directly with the doctors who care for the children in their home countries or home states and the nurses and doctors who work at ProCure. As a result of this alliance with ProCure, The Children’s Hospital at Saint Peter’s has become an international treatment center for pediatric cancer, while continuing to provide care for children traveling within the United States. Since 1985, Saint Peter’s has received the gold standard of accreditation by the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer as a Teaching Hospital Cancer Program. Saint Peter’s also is the recipient of the 2012 Commission’s Outstanding Achievement Award and Saint Peter’s nurses have been recognized by the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation. For more information about the Saint Peter’s Cancer Center, visit saintpetershcs.com/CancerCenter or call 732-745-8590 or toll free at 866-702-2737.
