Did the Chapter provide you with a job description when you started your position?

Individual Responses

4. Only what my bylaws stated.

3. Worked here 28 years as Admin Asst prior, job description changes over the years.

2. No, there was no job description of any sort. Only job posting, written by a NECA Member-Contractor. It was totally nothing like what my job turned out to be-written from standpoint of a member- just included the 'entertaining' portion of the job. I wrote up an 'official' job description for the position, based on what I learned from NECA, other chapter managers I met, things I learned from my membership at ASAE for managing an association. From there, I also put together a list/description of characteristics and skills for a chapter manager.

1. Being a new NECA Chapter, it was unclear what all of the duties were. I had to learn on the job.

Did your Board or departing manager give you enough information about what your

responsibilities would be at the chapter?

Individual Responses

5. Only what my bylaws stated

4. Somewhat, departing Manager left abruptly, my President helps a lot

3. NO!! Nothing - again, only their expectations about travel and how they liked to be entertained at NECA convention. It was based on their experience of my predecessor. See comments above.

2. The previous manager left six months before I started.

1. The Board and members of the search committee that conducted my interviews were very helpful in explaining the duties and responsibilities of the position. Unfortunately, there was not Chapter Manager in South Florida at that time to help with any transition or training.

6. Attended Director Training in Bethesda 5 months later.

5. NECA Staff Associate

4. New Chapter Manager School. A tremendous amount of mentoringfrom field rep and chapter managers. Priceless!!!!

3. SETS

2. The only 'training' I received was when I attended NECA CATS/SETS. Unfortunately, it was four months after I had assumed my responsibilities, but helpful, nonetheless.

5. other is mistake

4. There are so many hats that an "Exec Director" wears, that it can be and often is overwhelming, especially when you come into an office that has not been organized or updated.

3. The comradely of all chapter managers toward new chapter managers is exceptional. All chapter executives took time to assist me when I needed help. It is actually a quite impressive system which is not formed or managed but it works.

2. YES!!! All of the above! I had suggested the manager's 101 type course when I attended NECA CATS/SETS! I am so glad to see NECA might be considering this option! In addition, I think it would be GREAT if NECA also provided an outline of what 'assistant chapter managers' and chapter admin assistants might do, too. I realize each chapter is different, but certainly a guideline would be helpful. Also, any procedures for collection of national funds and the systems used, as I had nothing to go on and no one to explain it to me when I joined my chapter.

1. SETS was great help

Survey for New NECA Chapter Managers: What areas of your job do you believe

should receive more in-depth training and/or require special attention?

10. Agreed upon procedures for all chapters

9. Marketing to potential new members; training on Negotiations & what to track, gather & use; an overview of NECA's history and relationship with the IBEW, as well as it's roll with the various funds as Administrator with potential for being a Trustee; budgeting and other sources of income

8. Managers responsibilities. 7. Budgeting and effective meeting planning

6. Labor relations.

5. Labor Relations, Dealing with your Business Manager and Handling problems between your own Contractors Disputes

4. There is plenty of training out there, it just has to be utilized.

3. Grievance handling process/procedure. I think this should be a specific section of the new Leadership training. OR - offer it on a national basis perhaps 1-3 times per year in one place and invite NECA Chapter/members to attend; versus scheduling individually. Seems like it may be more efficient. Encourage/tell new chapter managers to register and attend. Collective Bargaining Negotiations; Labor Relations - (general information for new chapter managers) -basic guidelines for working with business managers. Trustee Training - tell new chapter managers some 'basics' of being a new trustee and encourage them to go to the first available International Foundation Training.

2. Learning about all the conferences/meetings and its purpose/importance 1. Negotiations

6. Aside from Bethesda, only those offered in District conferences, at the National Convention and through the International Foundation as a Trustee - NO, I'm not aware of any other training programs

5. Chapter Executives Institute

4. Negotiations courses outside of NECA and through MEI - Ryan Pendegraft.

3. NECA National Meetings.

2. The Labor Relations Conference was helpful - but only offered every two years. International Foundation - New Trustee training program (only offered 2X year). - so very helpful.

Survey for New NECA Chapter Managers: Please add any other comments or

concerns, if any (optional).

Individual Responses

5. I thought "Chapter Manager" was a title of the past? It definitely does not reflect properly on the multitude of responsibilities and duties that the "job" requires. It's kind of like calling an "administrative assistant" a "secretary"...

4. Any programs implemented to assist the new chapter executive should have the input of a chapter executive who is in the field every day.

3. I remain Manager and Administrative until the economy picks up, therefore, difficult to take advantage of all materials out there with limited time and non attendance of the meetings.

2. One suggestion/concern I have regarding Chapter Managers being assigned/required to be a Management Trustee on Labor/Management Pension, education, health/welfare, annuity Trust Funds. I believe strongly that Chapter Managers/Executive Directors should NOT be required/assigned to being a Trustee of any pension fund with the union. At my first day at NECA CATS/SETS, I was told by NECA national executives that there 'a chapter manager has no vested interest in being a Trustee'. However, upon assuming the role/signing the paper, the CM/ER assumes financial responsibility for the business of the trust funds. I believe there should be a requirement/prohibit CM/ER's from being trustees and it should be limited to only those that have a vested interest, such as contractors and union officers.

1. The National Office staff have been real helpful. Field Reps have been my key source of info. Encourage new managers to engage with other managers - greatest resource.
