breeds/bred: Australian Cattle Dog, Alaskan Malamute

I started showing Alaskan Malamutes in the early ’70s. We bred multiple Top Malamutes in Canada in the ’90s. We now have Australian Cattle Dogs, and had the Top Cattle Dog in Canada in 2016 and many in the Top 10. We have bred or owned over 75 champions, owner-handled. We have also bred and shown Quarter horses. I have judged in the U.S., Italy, Spain and England.

constantinE-amodEi, John | United States

breeds/bred: Miniature Schnauzer, Brussels Griffon, Boston Terrier

John first became involved in dogs when he was a teenager in the 1970s, working several dogs through to their obedience titles. In 1979, John purchased his first Miniature Schnauzer. During the 1980s, he apprenticed under Schnauzer handlers Sue Baines and Jackie Hicks (Irrenhaus). During that time, he developed his Schnauzer line based on the Irrenhaus dogs. John developed his Brussels Griffon line based on a black smooth French import combined with the American Norkus, Canadian Lorricbrook and UK Marquant lines. John became involved in Boston Terriers through his husband, Lloyd Amodei and has been enthusiastically breeding and exhibiting Bostons since then.

While maintaining a full-time job, John has been breeding Schnauzers and Brussels Griffons for over 35 years. Over those years, he bred over 125 champions, including group and Best in Show winners and handled over 150 champions. He bred the top Miniature Schnauzer in United Kingdom in 2003 and the first duel US/United Kingdom Champion. He has judged the American Brussels Griffon Association National Specialty and the American Miniature Schnauzer Club’s National Specialty twice. John has judged many regional specialties in the US and National Specialties in Japan, China, Finland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Canada, Denmark and Argentina. He is presently approved to judge the Terrier Group, the Working Group, Toy Group and Non-Sporting Group, as well as Best in Show.

John has served as the President of the American Miniature Schnauzer Club from 2005 until 2013. Previously, he served as Vice President for five years and had been a Board Member for over 15 years, as well as assuming many committee positions over the years. He is currently the Judge’s Education Coordinator. John is also a member of the Montgomery County Kennel Club. He is a founding member and President of the Liberty Brussels Griffon Club. He is a member of the Boston Terrier Club of America, the Tri-Angle Boston Terrier club, as well as several Kennel Clubs, including Hatboro Dog Club and Penn Treaty Kennel Club for which he has served as Show Chairman.

breeds: Rhodesian Ridgeback

Stewart has been around purebred dogs all of his life. Family dogs included Standard Dachshunds, Irish Setters, mixed breeds and the Rhodesian Ridgeback. Together with his wife Jacquie, the Cedarpoint Kennel name was born and has produced many Rhodesian Ridgeback champions, specialty winners, coursing champions, tracking and hunting dogs. Stewart is currently working towards his all-breed judging licence.

Stewart has a particular interest in Canine Anesthesia and Canine Bleeding disorders. Dogs are Stewart’s passion; however, Stewart sits on the Board of the Canadian Coalition for Green Healthcare and is an advocate for Climate Change Resiliency, volunteers with various organizations and is currently working for a major healthcare organization. Stewart currently sits as the Vice-President of the Oakville and District Kennel Club and Vice-President of the Canadian Kennel Club Foundation. He also teaches basic show handling and has judged rare breed shows.

breeds: Afghan Hound

Barbara Alderman bought her first dog, an Afghan Hound, in 1959. Bought as a pet, she was urged to show. After attending a few shows, she was totally hooked on dogs. Mrs. Alderman bred a few litters and at one point had the youngest bitch to finish, at nine months. She bred Afghans for some time then became an AKC licensed assistant handler. She eventually became a licensed all-breed handler, handling professionally for 28 years.

In 1988, she applied for and was granted her licence to judge. She is currently approved to judge all breeds. She was a breed judge at the 2001 AKC Eukanuba National Championship, and again in 2005. She has been a member of the Western Pennsylvania Kennel Association since 1959, as well as a member of the Fort Lauderdale Dog Club. She was an early member of the Midwest Afghan Hound Club, where she did publicity work and published newsletters. Her husband, George Heitzman, is also a judge.

breeds: Airedale Terrier

I did not come from dog show family but always loved purebred dogs. My first dog was a Doberman. After University I had Whippets from the late Mag Magder. I also had Pomeranians. One in particular, a boy named Bavanew’s Time after Time was purchased by the late Nigel Aubrey Jones and brought to Thailand, where he made his mark on that part of the world.

I worked for Wendy and Richard Paquette on my time off. They provided much exposure to multiple breeds, but more importantly terriers. It was at this time I met and embarked on

a long relationship with Lotus Tutton (Fairewood), who has become a great friend and mentor. She introduced me to Airedales and Norwich Terriers. Recently you may have seen me with Lakeland Terriers from Terri Alloway (Northcote). I began judging in 2006 starting with Terriers, and am now licensed to judge groups 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7.

lEX, sandra | Canada

breeds: American Cocker Spaniel, Affenpinscher

Dogs have occupied Sandra’s entire life for as long as she can remember. Her mother bred American Cocker Spaniels for 40 years. As she entered into her 20s Sandra became actively involved with showing. She bred black and black-and-tan American Cocker Spaniels under the LESAN’S prefix. Her crowning glory was in 1989 when her Am., Can. & Bda. Ch. Lesan’s Just One Kiss went Best of Winners at the American Nationals from the largest ever entry of black bitches. Health issues with the breed eventually took her out of breeding American Cocker Spaniels.

Her judging career began in 1993 with the Canadian Kennel Club and she is currently an all-breed judge. Nine years ago she began breeding Affenpinschers. In a short time she has gone Best of Winners twice, Award of Merit along with Best of Opposite Sex at the American Nationals.

Currently all of her dogs are American and Canadian champions with three are Best in Show winners. She also has Canada’s all-time top-winning Affenpinschers in her home. Sandra has been fortunate to have judged the American Spaniel Club twice with her doing the black and parti-coloured varieties. Dogs have been a lifetime passion both from the breeding and judging point of view and one she takes seriously.

WHitE, starr | Canada

breeds: Saluki

My first purebred show dog was a West Highland White Terrier. I was a teenager and knew little about showing dogs and even less about grooming. I became seriously interested in life with purebred dogs.

My Westie was followed by a Standard Schnauzer. Through him I started to learn about balance, soundness and breed type. As well I learned about competing in obedience and conformation and about the importance of buying the right dog, with the right breeder as a mentor.

Then we (my husband Randy and I) discovered Salukis. Our first Saluki arrived in our lives in 1975, and we bred our first litter in 1979. We have been the breeders of Canada’s #1 Saluki every year since 1996. We have bred multiple specialty winners, group and Best in Show winners. We are the owners/breeders of Canada’s first two Grand Champion Salukis. We have had Salukis in the Top 10 all breeds on two different occasions. Over the years we have shared our lives with Whippets, Borzoi, Golden Retrievers, Westies, Australian Shepherds, Poodles, Standard Schnauzer, Irish Wolfhound and a Great Pyrenees.

When judging I look for breed type. Once that is established I look for dogs that are balanced and sound, both in mind and in body. I want dogs that move well and appear to be able to do the job for which they originated.
