When the president of New Hampshire environmentaland specialty contracting firm Envirovantage learned thatone of the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing was vir-tually unable to maneuver himself into and around his fami-ly’s home in Concord, N.H., he eagerly accepted the oppor-tunity to help.
“As soon as we were contacted about contributing ourservices to a major rehab of the family’s house, we wereimmediately ready to get started,” said Scott Knightly, pres-ident of Envirovantage and an officer in the NationalDemolition Association. “By helping Jeff [Bauman Jr.] andhis family, we feel we’re doing our small part in supportingall of the victims of the horrific attack on Boston. This onereally hit home for us.”
The image of Jeff Bauman Jr., who lost both of his legs inthe attack as he waited on the finish line for his girlfriend tocomplete the race, has become an iconic symbol of thetragedy. While completing physical therapy at his mother’shome in Massachusetts, he was able to visit his father’s homeonly once because it was not wheelchair accessible.
Enter the Concord general contracting firm, Cobb HillConstruction, which got the ball rolling by reaching out toJeff Bauman Jr.’s family, his family’s church, and a dedicat-ed group of business volunteers. Their goal was to create anaccessible new kitchen, bathroom and bedroom, as well asbuild a wheelchair ramp for the home.
During the early demolition process, where flooring andsiding were being removed, Envirovantage of Epping, N.H.,contributed its services, safely removing and disposing ofhazardous asbestos materials which had been used in thehome’s initial building process. Federal regulations requirethat all asbestos materials be managed by specially trainedand licensed experts.
“For the last 27 years, we’ve been improving our asbestosabatement techniques and have worked with scores of con-tractors throughout New England, including Cobb HillConstruction,” Knightly said.
The contractor, whichdonates its services to charitiesthroughout New England, alsoperformed selective demolitionon the rear porch area to openthe back of the house for anaddition.
Added Michael R. Taylor, executive director of theNational Demolition Association, “We consider environ-mental stewardship to be an essential part of our mission.Projects like the one Envirovantage has undertaken is a greatexample of how our members exert a positive impact on thequality of life in our country.”
The renovation of the Bauman home, where Jeff Jr.’s twohalf-brothers also live, began in early August and is nowcomplete. It’s enabled the young man to more easily enterthrough a wheelchair ramp and move from room to room inthe newly adapted home.

less to say, he does not allow smoking in the equipment oron job sites. Weekly, everything is washed and“Armoralled.” According to Hiltz, even those operators whofirst are intimidated because they have not worked that waybecome addicted to it; “They develop a sense of pride.”
And that’s his philosophy, boiled down — there’s no suchthing as a small detail. And, you have to be proud of whatyou do. Which sounds fine, but takes a lot of thinking andplanning, and paying attention to everything and anything.
“I learned it from my father,” said the founder of HiltzExcavating of Ashland, N.H., talking about going with hisdad to job sites at the age of five, pail in hand, and running awheel loader at 12, always looking up to his father, “who didwhat he said and said what he did.”
By 18, Hiltz was a superintendent on job sites; he had toprove himself to his coworkers and earned their respectbecause they could tell he knew what he was doing. Heworked with his brothers for a couple of years after his fatherpassed away in 1994, and then decided to branch out. He wasonly 26 at the time.
“People had seen me at work and they knew they couldtrust me,” said Hiltz, who nevertheless admits that he started“on a wing and a prayer.” Maybe that’s why his first job wasa retainer wall for a local church. And what about his fleet?Well, he was all set; he owned a pickup truck and rented anexcavator and a dump truck.
Focusing on what he had experience in — commercialsite work — he started getting enough jobs to allow him tobuy his own equipment and hire workers. Still, at times cash
flow was slow and he would have to make payroll with hispersonal credit card.
“But I always surrounded myself with good people,” hesaid, “and knowing that has kept me going.”
When things got tough those were the same people whocame through for him. Hiltz remembered, “I’ve had employ-ees volunteer to be laid off for a week here or there; theyknew things were not going really well and they wanted tohelp in any way that they could.”
Today, the company owns a total of 125 pieces of equip-ment, and they are bidding on larger and larger jobs; J. HiltzExcavating has anywhere from 6 to 10 projects going on at
any one time.Hiltz doesn’t lose sleep about putting food on his family’s
table — now he worries about 50 tables instead. He’s still outthe door at 5 a.m. and back at 8 p.m., and can usually befound in the cab of one of his impeccable machines. Hisobsession about details has not diminished — he personallyconducts surprise equipment inspections and if there’s any-thing that’s not up to standard, he’ll leave one of his businesscards on the operator’s seat.
Has anything changed over the years? “Technology,
