Monthly Report October 2020
The highlight of this month was the parent-teacher meeting held for the whole school
A. Events and Celebrations
Gandhi Jayanti
A special online assembly was conducted for the entire
school on 2nd October. The assembly started with one
of Bapu's favourite hymns 'Abide with Me' sung by few
children. This was followed by a talk on Lal Bahadur
Shastri and a video showing a life changing instance in his life. There after a video
having scenes from Mahatma Gandhi's life was shown. The video was set to the
bhajan वषै्णव जन sung by three of our own teachers. रघपुति राघव राजा राम , a prayer
synonymous with Gandhi ji. The assembly ended with the national anthem.

West Bengal Day
Studying about West Bengal is part of our Class 5
SST curriculum. As is done every year, this year too
we had a special online assembly – West Bengal
Day, held on October 20. The assembly started with
the prayer Anondo Loke sung by two of our class 4
students, Saushamya and Baruni. Three students,
Adrita, Anwita and Midori danced enthusiastically
on the famous Bengali song Dhitang Dhitang Bole. Post
the dance, Abir and Khanak of class 5 gave
presentations on Kolkata and Durga Puja respectively. The assembly was brightened
by three students from Prep A- Adrija, Ishaan and Shreyan reciting nursery
rhymes in Bengali. The assembly ended with the teachers evoking the festive spirit by
their Dhunuchi Dance.
Saushamya Baruni
World Animal Day
The children of class 2 and 3 celebrated Animal Day with
great enthusiasm. A role play activity was organized where
children dressed up in animal costumes, painted their faces,
wore animal masks, made finger puppets etc. They also
spoke about their favourite animals and some endangered
species to create more awareness and understand why we
need to protect animals. They participated enthusiastically
and enjoyed themselves thoroughly.
B. Curriculum Related
Science
While studying asexual reproduction in plants, children of class 5 grew various plants
like money plant, rose, potato, carrot, onion, ginger and garlic; from stem cuttings,
modified stems and roots.
The difference between sexual (reproduction by seeds) and asexual reproduction in
plants was clearly understood by performing this activity.
Some children have a real green thumb, as you can see from the following pictures
of the lush and beautiful plants grown by them.
Class 3 children conducted the “blooming flower
experiment” in the online science class. Students
participated enthusiastically and with immense
efficiency. The children made coloured paper flowers
and kept them ready before the class. During the
session the petals of the flowers were folded and
dropped into a trough of water. The children were
thrilled to see the gradual unfolding of the petals. The
experiment was a success! The paper flower is
powered by the scientific phenomenon called 'capillary
action'. Paper is made up of small fibres. When these
fibres absorb water, they swell up and the paper
expands. This makes the creases flatten out, which in
turn makes the flower open.
Class 4 has been studying a chapter on plants. Transpiration is an important part of
this chapter. To understand the concept even better, experiments in capillary action
were conducted:
1. Tissue paper was folded and only it’s end
dipped in a glass about quarter full with
water. The children were amazed to find
the other end of the tissue become wet!
The water reached the other end of the
paper in a matter of minutes! Capillary
action at its best. The tiny tube like fibres
in the tissue absorbed the water and
passed it further and further up... all against
gravity!
2. Capillary action and the suction created by
transpiration are also responsible for water
being transported to all parts of a plant,
however high and however tall. This was
experienced by putting a stem of a white
flower... gladiola or a chrysanthemum in a
glass containing coloured water (coloured
by adding blue or orange food colouring).
In a few hours, the children could observe
their white flower had traces of the colour they used (blue or orange) on its petals!
Another amazing phenomenon in nature thanks to capillary action is transpiration.
The fine tubes in the plant stem absorb water and send it further up. This upward
movement of water is further enhanced by transpiration where water loss from
leaves creates space for more water to move up from below.
These were enjoyable and informative activities for the students
English
A role play activity was organized with 3A on
15th October wherein the children made animal
masks and spoke about their favourite animals.
They participated enthusiastically and enjoyed
themselves thoroughly.
