TRANSCRIPT
This week - April Honeyman
April is unashamedly, a feminist passionate educator who has committed her whole
professional life of 40 years to the education of young women in Catholic secondary
schools.
April is currently in her eighth year as Principal of St Columba’s College, Essendon, having
been Principal of Our Lady of Sion College, Box Hill from 1997-2004.
In 1990, her love of Asia, enabled her to be employed by the Catholic Education Office as
an Education Officer with prime responsibility for Asian Languages and Studies (two years),
Deputy Chairperson, Curriculum (two years), and finally Chairperson, Secondary Staff
Group (two years). Prior to that, April was Deputy Principal: Curriculum at Sancta Sophia
College, Glenroy, originally a Sisters of Charity school, and now amalgamated into Penola
College, Broadmeadows.
April has informed us of the dire plight of the majority of women in the world. Underpaid,
under-represented in managerial positions, overworked, abused physically, emotionally
and sexually. The advent of equality has not lived up to its initial promise, progress is slow
but respectful sensible education points to a gradual improvement in the conditions
women have to endure. Thank God I was born a male!

WATERLOGGED
This is the title of an article written by Dr. Laura Pearce, a preventive health specialist, in the
NSW Dentist, September 2011 edition. She has studied the role of water intake in
maintaining optimum health, and discusses the background behind the current popularity of
bottled water, and how it is promoted. She notes that bottled water became a fashion
accessory over the last two decades, and film stars and magazine articles urged folk to drink
at least two litres of water a day to “flush out the toxins.’ Large corporations were not slow in
promoting the concept, to the extent that the Australian market is now worth about $500
million per year.
Dr. Pearce found that many of the best selling brands are owned by larger corporations. In
Australia, Coca Cola owns Mount Franklin and Pump, plus a “vitamin water” called Gaceau,
Nestle owns Perrier, Vittel and San Pellegrino and Danone has Volvic and Evian. There are
others and they all sell at about the same price as soft drink. She noted that a kidney
specialist Professor Goldfarb has stated, in refereed journals, that there is no evidence that
increased water consumption improves your skin, reduces your appetite, helps to remove
toxins or prevent or control headaches.
Laura Pearce points out that the body has a sophisticated mechanism for telling us when to
drink more, and when to stop. She says that fluid balance is important, and a normal intake of
water is around two litres for a woman and two and a half for men. But most foods contain
water, and your body will tell you when to drink more water. You simply drink when you
are thirsty. You don’t need to carry a bottle of water wherever you go.
Besides, there is an environmental concern. There are a lot of bottles out there to be disposed
of. Bundanoon(2578) has banned the sale of plastic-bottled water and has installed water
bubblers in public places. The NSW government has banned all its departments from buying
bottled water.
Australia’s public water supplies are uniformly excellent, so use them as required and save
money. A final word: the Director of the environmental group , Do Something, asks, “what
do you get when you spell Evian backwards?”

New Addition to Kosnar Klan Denis and I thought you may like to know that Tarnya, our eldest daughter, (who walked some laps at Relay For Life!) gave birth to a baby boy on Mon, 27th Feb. So we are now the proud grandparents of Caden Lucas Eastway. (our 1st!!)
Our teacher talks to herself; does yours?
Yes, but she doesn't realise it; she thinks we're actually listening!
Teacher: Why didn't you answer me? Pupil: I did; I shook my head.
Teacher: You don't expect me to hear it rattling from here, do you?!
Teacher: I'd like to go through one whole day without having to tell you off.
Pupil: You have my permission !
Teacher: Will you stop looking at the clock at the wall and pay attention? Pupil: Time will pass, but will you?
I didn't do my homework because I lost my memory.
When did this start?
When did what start?
The brain is a wonderful thing. Why do you say that ?
Because it starts working the second you get up in the morning and never stops until you get asked a question in class !
When I was your age; I thought nothing of walking 5 miles to school.
I agree, I don't think much of it myself!
Be sure that you go straight home.
I can't; I live just round the corner!
Playing truant from school is like a credit card. Fun now, pay later!
Laugh and the class laughs with you.
But you get detention alone!
Teacher: When you yawn, you're supposed to put your hand to your mouth!
Pupil: What, and get bitten?
Teacher: You aren't paying attention to me. Are you having trouble hearing?
Pupil: No teacher, I'm having trouble listening!
Teacher: Why were you late? Pupil: Sorry, teacher, I overslept.
Teacher: You mean you need to sleep at home too?!
Teacher: Class, we will have only half a day of school this morning.
Class: Hooray! Teacher: We will have the other half this afternoon!
Teacher: That's quite a cough you have there; what are you taking for it?
Pupil: I don't know teacher. What will you give me?
Son: I can't go to school today. Father: Why not?
Son: I don't feel well
Father: Where don't you feel well? Son: In school !
Teacher: You missed school yesterday, didn't you?
Pupil: Not very much !
Father: I hear you skipped school to play football.
Son: No I didn't, and I have the fish to prove it!
Pupil (on phone) : My son has a bad cold and won't be able to come to school today. School Secretary: Who is this?
Pupil: This is my father speaking!
Father: How do you like going to school? Son: The going bit is fine, as is the coming home bit too, but I'm not too keen on the time in-between!

To Mr. Thomas, My name is Chantelle White and I was the recipient of the Joe Bradbury award in 2011. I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude for the ongoing support I have received from the Rotary Club organisation. I would also like to let you know that this year I enrolled in RMIT University and am studying Professional Communication, and majoring in Politics, Economies and Business and I am very satisfied that this course holds the greatest potential for establishing myself into my desired profession of fashion journalism. I am also intending to study fashion part-time, commencing in 2013. I was given four pre-atar offers into courses including Melbourne University, RMIT and LaTrobe, and am very happy with my decision to study at RMIT. I again would like to thank the Rotary Club for the Joe Bradbury Award and the opportunities it has endowed me. In addition to my studies, I am seeking some casual or part-time work in the local area. I was wondering if there were any opportunities for employment in the Rotary Club or throughout the involved organisations. I am a very hard worker and a quick learner. I have four days of availability (Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday). I have attached a resume and reference and would greatly appreciate the opportunity to work in an organisation associated with Rotary. I am willing and able to work in various areas including retail and administration. Thankyou very much for your time and I look forward to hearing a response from you. Chantelle White.
