Operation Cleft was founded in 2015 and is a world-wide Rotary program that provides free cleft surgery for underprivileged children in Bangladesh. Cleft surgery is not provided by overburdened Bangladesh public health system. The incidence of clefts in Bangladesh is approximately 1 per 500 births and it is estimated that upwards of 5000 babies are born with cleft palates and/or cleft lips each year. Untreated clefts cause health problems including chest infections and deafness, affect the appearance of the child and their speech and are likely to result in poor educational attainment and social isolation. Operation Cleft has funded over 9,300 operations, transforming the lives of the affected children and young people and enhancing the lives of their families Current objectives of the program include:- To increase the number of operations to at least 1,200 per year. To increase the number of qualified plastic surgeons in our program and in Bangladesh. To encourage sustainability. To encourage the development of plastic surgery training programs. To encourage the development of speech therapy as an accessible service. To increase knowledge about and understanding of the cleft lip/palate and comprehensive cleft care throughout the medical community in Bangladesh and to ensure that affected families have a basic understanding of the condition and treatment. The Rotary Club of Box Hill Central is planning a trip to Bangladesh, India and Nepal later this year to visit various projects including Operation Cleft and would be pleased to hear from Rotarians who would like to join us. If any of the club members would like to join us they can express potential interest by email to [email protected]. We would be open to suggestions about rotary programs to be visited during the trip planning stage. Operation Cleft is grateful for the ongoing support of the Rotary Club of Essendon and its members.

Our speaker today was Vici Funnell, Chair of Operation Cleft, an international project of the Rotary Club of Box Hill Central. Vici spoke about the work they do in Bangladesh, how they raise money for their project, the services they offer and insights on how other projects could benefit from their knowledge of working in 3rd world countries. As the Essendon Rotary club has participated in this project in the past it was great to learn a little more about it.

Operation Cleft has funded over 9,300 operations, transforming the lives of the affected children and young people and enhancing the lives of their families

Current objectives of the program include:-

To increase the number of operations to at least 1,200 per year.

The Rotary Club of Box Hill Central is planning a trip to Bangladesh, India and Nepal later this year to visit

various projects including Operation Cleft and would be pleased to hear from Rotarians who would like to join

us. If any of the club members would like to join us they can express potential interest by email to

[email protected]. We would be open to suggestions about rotary programs to be visited during the trip

planning stage.

Operation Cleft is grateful for the ongoing support of the Rotary Club of Essendon and its members.

Learned to organically farm pigs, chicken and rice and established Bahay Tuluyan’s Nature Farms in

Quezon and Laguna

Conceptualised and built Makabata Guesthouse and Café as a social enterprise and youth training program

Kept Bahay Tuluyan solvent despite rarely having funds for more than a month or two in advance

Been resource person and facilitator at many events relating to children’s issues

Helped establish the organisations ‘Philippines Against Child Trafficking’ and ‘Asia Against Child Trafficking’

Acted as the National Convenor for Terre des Hommes Germany

Elected and served as Asia Representative for the Koora of Terre des Hommes Germany for 5 years

Led Bahay Tuluyan to create policy changes that have led to the closing of Manila Reception and Action Center and Senate resolutions calling for the investigation of children in government shelters

Repeatedly and bravely spoken out against the abuse of children, in a variety of forums, at great personal sacrifice and risk to herself

Sent more than 500 children to school and helped get approximately 15 children through college

Provided the means to shelter and feed up to 100 children every night for 15 years, this growing from initially 20 children in early years to now 100

Assisted more than 40 staff of Bahay Tuluyan to be able to work in a just and fair workplace and to be able to provide their families with decent lives

Established mechanisms to allow Bahay Tuluyan to be able to generate its own income – now generating approximately 20% of its income each year

Been a manager, teacher, mentor, architect, social worker, farmer, accountant, problem solver, facilitator, negotiator, advocate, spokesperson, peace-maker, friend, confidante, sister and mother to hundreds of people.

Lily doesn’t have much time outside of Bahay Tuluyan so when she has time she likes to rest, spend time with

her family, watch movies and garden. She is passionate about protecting children’s rights and sees her work

at Bahay Tuluyan as a ‘life mission’ not just a job. She was originally ‘borrowed’ from her job as a dentist by

the Board of Bahay Tuluyan to trouble shoot at Bahay Tuluyan for three months. She has now served Bahay

Tuluyan for nearly 15 years and plans to stay with Bahay Tuluyan until her retirement in 2017. Her ultimate

goal is to set up Bahay Tuluyan so that it can be sustainable into the future as a safe and welcoming place for
