New Guest Pass System LaunchedEarly last year we learned that the company that developed the software for our Guest Pass system would no longer support their software. This prompted the Board to assign the Security Committee with the task of searching out new Guest Pass system software. After many interviews and site visits, the Security Committee recommended a company called Applications by Design Inc. or ABDI.

The task of switching to a new software application is never totally turnkey. Hurricane Matthew threw a monkey wrench in the timetable for many of our projects and the transition to this new software was also affected. The data from our old system has been loaded onto the new system. Some upgrades to the computers at our gates were necessary as well as the purchase of compatible printers.

All these pieces have now come together and the new system is operational. The look and feel will be a little different and we ask for your indulgence as we work out any remaining bugs and get acclimated to the new system ourselves. President’s ReportIt’sAugustandthe“DogDaysofSummer”areuponus.KidsKampiswinding down after a banner attendance year, and the Spring Lake Pool continues to draw rave reviews from HHP residents. What better way to cool down on a warm August day than to drift down Harry Heron’s Lazy River. When our teenage granddaughters were making plans for a late JulyvisitfromAtlantato“Grammy’shouseatthebeach”,thenumberone item on their To Do list was the Spring Lake Pool.

I’m writing this after just receiving my July issue of Plantation Living. Each month when I break the seal and start reading this wonderful publication, I’m amazed all over again at how much there is to do in Hilton Head Plantation. Write ups on 32 clubs and organizations – from the Artists Association and Avid Gardeners to the Woodcarvers and the Yacht Club – are included along with reports on four golf clubs, concerts, healthandfitnessprograms, andwateraerobics. What’snot to like about living in Paradise? A tip of the President’s hat goes to Denise McAllister who manages the POA’s communications and publishes the monthly newsletter.

Critical to HHP’s many activities is the army of resident volunteers who, in coordination with the POA professional staff, make our community hum.Inadditiontothenine-memberBoardofDirectors,overfiftyresidents serve as volunteer members of the seven POA Standing Committees. Add to that the members of the Nominating Committee, the Election Committee, the volunteers at the July 4th celebration and other festivities, and the untold number of residents involved in the various clubs and organizations, and you begin to understand the true magic of Hilton Head Plantation. HHP is a wonderful place because you, the residents, get involved and make it a wonderful place.

Finally, I want to exercise the President’s prerogative and single out two volunteers for special recognition: Vicky McMillan and Miriam Waterhouse. These two ladies alternate writing the monthly “LowcountryNature”articlesinPlantation Living, bringing us wonderful insights into the environment in which we live. Thank you, Vicky and Miriam, for the time and effort you put into generating these articles.

All of your Board members take seriously our responsibility to represent the best interests of Hilton Head Plantation residents and value your opinions and thoughts. If you wish to communicate with the Board, please call 843-681-8800 ext. 9, or email [email protected], or send a letter to the POA Service Center. You may also email me at [email protected]. Board meeting Minutes are available on the Plantation website: www.hiltonheadplantation.com under Documents/Forms/Minutes.

Stay cool, stay safe, and have fun…you’re living in Paradise!

General Manager’s ReportCoffee with PeterOur next Coffee is scheduled for Thursday, September 28, 10:00 AM, at the Plantation House. Our special guest will be Max Mayo, Head Coach of the Hilton Head Island High School cross country team.

New Gate Pass SystemPlease see the page 1 article on this project. We appreciate your patience with the launch of this new and improved program. We will announce and implement additional features of this new system as we move through the roll out process. Back to SchoolYoungsters throughout the community are back at school. Please be alert to our young scholars waiting for busses and riding their bikes to school. Every year we have a new crop of little ones who are not yet savvy to the ways of motor vehicles and busses. Give yourself a littleextratime‒schoolbusseswillslowyoudownandremember, bothsidesoftrafficmuststopforastoppedschool bus. Let’s make sure all of our children get to school safely. Parents, please remind your children that motor vehicles have the right-of-way at all crosswalks on the Plantation.

The Hot Dog MeterOne of the many reasons our community works so well is due to our abundance of volunteers. Our July 4th celebration is one of the many opportunities volunteers have to give back to the HHP community. Once again, a well-deserved thank you to the army of volunteers who helped to make HHP Day such a wonderful event for all in attendance. Despite forecasts of rain and thunderstorms leading up to July 4th, Mother Nature gave us an exceptional day. A wealth of events and games were on hand to delight children and adults of allages.Onceagain,Iwasthefirsttobeperchedatopthe Dunk Tank. I counted 21 throws that hit the mark anddroppedmeintothe“drink.”Ourkitchencrew, composed this year of Betsy Weppner, Todd Lindstrom, and Wo and Lai Look, reported that attendees consumed 500 hot dogs and 440 slices of pizza.

Pine Island BeachThis project has several moving parts. We continue to move our permit application for a pedestrian walkway from the upland to the Pine Island isthmus. We are also requesting permission to place an additional 10,000 cubic yards of beach-compatible sand on the Pine Island isthmus.

Storm Clean upAs noted back in June in one of our many email updates, the Jarvis Creek Pump station is back online and the Main Street canal has been cleared of debris. We still have a request pending with the Town to redesign the trash rack that became clogged due to a truck bedliner during the height of Hurricane Matthew. Hopefully, you noticed the elevation of the lagoons that feed the Main Street canal and Jarvis Creek Pump station havereturnedtotheir“normal”staticwaterelevation. The aerator has also been reinstalled at the Fallen Arrow lagoon, which borders the outbound lane of Whooping Crane Way as you pass the Headlands South intersection.

We continue to work with the Town on clearing drainageways that are FEMA eligible. Beaufort County worked to clear eligible storm debris from the marsh. I received several concerned calls regarding what resembleda“tank-like”vehiclethatwasroamingthemarshes in late June/early July. That vehicle was used by FEMA contractors to remove eligible debris.

We are still working on about twenty (20) properties that need varying degrees of attention. Most are situations related to Hurricane Matthew. Each is being handled using the tools we have to move the property to an acceptableappearanceandfinancialsituation.Manyof

These are all legitimate and legal reasons to ownafirearminSC.Mostfolkstaketheresponsibilityof gun ownership seriously and keep their weapons in a safe place, secured from theft and the hands of the untrained or children. There are unfortunately a small numberoffirearmownerswho, forwhateverreason, leave their weapons in unlocked vehicles which makes suchunsecuredweapons“easypickins”forthievesjust out trying car doors. Gun ownership comes with many responsibilities, one of which is to secure your weapon from possible theft. Leaving a loaded gun in an unlocked vehicle is not responsible gun ownership and not only creates a loss for the gun owner, but also safety issues for the greater community. Stolen weapons are often used in crimes and placing a loaded weapon in the hands of an untrained thief, no matter how deserving of the consequences you may feel about such a thief, is not only dangerous to the thief but to anyone within range of such an untrained individual. If you own a weapon, do not leave your weapon in an unlocked vehicle. You have a responsibility to secure your weapon.

WebsitePlease visit www:hiltonheadplantation.com. If you have not done so already, please consider signing up for our Email Services, which include Safety Alerts, Urgent Information, receiving Plantation Living online, and our Recreation updates. Signing up takes less than a minute and can be found under the Email Services tab on the left side of the screen. Hurricane KitsWith Hurricane Matthew still in our thoughts, if you have not already done so, please review the POA’s Hurricane Preparedness Guide, which can be found at: www.hiltonheadplantation.com under the Security tab. You can also pick up a copy at the POA Service Center on Surrey Lane. Please review this very important material, which was updated due to our experience with Hurricane Matthew. If you have not yet prepared a Hurricane Evacuation Kit for yourself and family, please review the section in the Hurricane Preparedness Guide on what items should be included. Your kit should be kept in an easily accessible place and updated periodically. Remember, the time to prepare for

a possible hurricane strike/evacuation is before a threat is imminent.

Water ConservationIf you have an inground irrigation system, please give the sprinkler heads a periodic tune up. Over time, these heads get out of adjustment and oftentimes put more water on your driveway and the street than on your turf and plant material.

Security − A Message from the Chief...

The “ABCs” of the ARBThroughout the year, the ARB offers guidelines to inform residents of submission procedures, policy changes, and current building trends. The ARB works with property owners who are interested in enhancing their living space by adding a garage, and/or redesigning their landscape to incorporate walkways, spas, andfirepits.Manyofthesecanenhance your home and lifestyle! The following are guidelines that should allow for a productive and timely submission:

• The ARB meets on the fourth (4th) Thursday of every month with the exception of November and December, which will be on the third (3rd) Thursday.• All submissions must be received no later than 12:00 noon on the Monday prior to the scheduled ARB meeting. • It is strongly recommended that all submissions be prepared by a South Carolina licensed architect or design professional.

A Design Review requires the following information:

• A current As-Built survey not older than three (3) years with property lines and setback requirements • A full set of architectural drawings in 1/8-inch to 1-foot scale and relevant elevations • Current photographs of the area being renovated and neighboring properties• Application form • Submission fee

Providing a full submission to the ARB will expedite your project. The ARB guides and regulates improvements to our community to maintain and enhance the quality of development and property values.

“Harry Heron” Master Covenants Bird This month’s focus: Out of sight ―out of mind; New Gate Pass System

AsIflyoverthePlantationafterdark, the activity level is much different. Most of us are busy one way or the other trying to squeeze the most out of each summer day. At the end of those busy days we sometimes forget last minutes details like putting away those outside items used duringafun-filledandhecticday.Let’s not forget some of the basics that helps to keep our Plantation

beautiful, peaceful, and neighbor friendly.

Work and Play ― Then Put it AwayRemember, boats and trailers, recreational watercraft, Jet Skis, kayaks, canoes, etc. are to be stored away, not left out on driveways waiting to be used again. Toys and play equipment must be put away at the end of the day. Any such equipment that is no longer in use should be removed from the property. (Example: If a minor child has used a POA-approved basketball hoop in the driveway and has now moved or gone to college, then the item should be stored or otherwise removed.) Portable play equipment such as skateboard ramps must be removed at night. Approved play equipment may only be used during daylight hours after 7:00 AM. After dark, activity is prohibited so always be mindful and respectful of the neighbors. Equipment used for gardening such as water hoses, tool, trashcans, fertilizer bags, wheelbarrows, etc. must be cleaned up and put away after use.

No Gate Pass, No EntryIn a recent beak-to-beak conservation, I was asked if a guest could use a Houseguest Card to gain entry onto Hilton Head Plantation. That would be a NEGATIVE. You cannot present a Houseguest Card at the gatehouses to gain access onto HHP. Residents should keep their Houseguest Cards at their home for safekeeping until their guest arrives. Residents must either call in a pass for their guests via phone or website, or provide a list of their guests by name to the Security Department. The Houseguest Card policy was established to provide residents’ guests access to our facilities without being accompanied by the resident.

New Gate Pass SystemThe Security Department is transitioning to a new gate pass system. The POA has utilized several means of communication to provide residents with the information needed to use the new gate pass system (including a recent email notice). If you are not signed up on our eblast system, you may go online

(www.hiltonheadplantation.com) to do so. My good friend Denise McAllister, the POA’s Communications Coordinator, has provided step-by-step instructions via aPDFfiletoassistresidentswiththeonlineuseofthenew system. The system is really neat with lots of new features that will make the guest pass experience more pleasantandefficient.Therewillbesomebumpsaswebreakinandfine-tunethesystemsoyourpatienceis appreciated. The Security Department will also be happy to assist residents during the transition into the new system.

Lowcountry Nature: Cicadas

by Vicky McMillan

All summer we’ve been hearing the raspy, pulsating songs of cicadas. One of these big insects is noisy enough, but a dozen or a hundred singing en masse can seem deafening.

Cicadas are stout, beady-eyed insects with sucking mouthparts and clear, veiny wings. They live most of their lives underground as immature, wingless nymphs, sucking the

sap from tree roots. Once fully grown, they tunnel upwards through the soil, shed their old skins, and move up into the trees.

It’s the adult males that do all the singing. The sound comes from two drum-like membranes on the abdomen that are rapidly deformed inward and outward by specialized muscles. Internal air sacs amplify the high-pitched sounds. Each of the 3,000 or so species around the world has its own distinctive song.

Thesongsattractreceptivefemales, whichrespondinturnbydistinctiveflickeringmotionsof their wings. After mating, the females lay eggs underneath the bark of twigs, and the nymphs, once hatched, drop to the ground and begin their long subterranean development.

Cicadas usually do little long-term damage to trees, even when they’re numerous. They don’t sting or bite. In fact, they playasignificantroleinthefolkloreandcuisineofJapan,China, andotherpartsoftheworld.

Farmers ClubThe only good thing I can say is that this horribly hot (and rainy!) month is half over. So get your plots ready for fall planting. Check out our planting chart at www.hhpfarmers.com for

useful information on when to plant what, but hold off on radishes and lettuce unless you have a lot of shade. Basically, you can plant most of what you planted in the spring starting the last week in August and continuing into September. BUT – expect a lot more insects in the fall, especially grasshoppers that nothing will kill in their mature stage. I meant to order Semaspore Bait, which is a naturally occurring protozoa that infects and kills only grasshoppers, but waited too late, so now my best option is cutting them with clippers or grabbing and twistingwithaglovedhand.Youwillusuallyfindtwoona plant together with a larger male and smaller female.

Be conscientious about keeping your weeds down, and use a herbicide only when there is little breeze to blow it onto your neighbor’s plot. Birds are a pleasure and a weed seed eater, and if you supply a birdbath, keep the water fresh for them.

Our wonderful dinners resume in September. If you do not receive an RSVP, please call or email me as they are too good to miss.

If you are interested in renting a 25 by 25 foot plot for $30 a year plus membership fee of $20, please call Kevin Rapp at 717-314-9704.

“Friendly Foodies” We will take a hiatus in August, resuming our festivities in September.

Our hosts create scrumptious entrées and a side, while guests provide appetizers, salads, desserts, and wines.

These have been wonderful evenings full of fabulous food, drinks, conversation, and new friends.

There will be no meeting in August. While you’re waiting for the September meeting, check out our website: hhpfishingclub.com. Some good stuff and great pictures!

ThisisbeingwritteninearlyJulyaftereightfishingsessions at Kids Kamp, with still a month to go (it’ll be over when you receive this issue). The turnout of volunteers has been excellent. The Board thanks all who participated. Fishing results have been equally good. The decision to spend our entire allotment of stockingfundsonpanfishforSeabrooklagoonhasturned out to be the correct one. Kids are catching fishinfargreaternumbersthaninanypreviousyear. On the negative side, no largemouth bass have been caught, which adds to the speculation that we lost thosebiggerfishduringHurricaneMatthew.

As you drive toward the mainland on Squire Pope Road, there are saltwater ponds on either side of the road which are great places to put a minnow trap to catch some bait. When my grandkids were here at the end of June we did this and found that the pond on the east side of the road had a thick oil slick on the surface. Someone thought the pond would be a great place to get rid of some used motor oil. The water on the other side of the road was clear, but it was difficulttofindanopenspottoplacethetrapbecauseofallthetrashthathadbeendumpedthere‒bottles, beer cans, plastic bottles of all sizes and shapes, and Styrofoam. Bad. But what was worse was that when we took our minnows to Bear Lake in the Plantation, we found much of the same kind of refuse that one of our own residents left behind. Some plastic grocery bags were carefully hidden in the bushes. The bags reeked from rotting chicken necks together with the usual assortment of bottles and cans. I hope those people enjoyed their crabs.

These may be the lazy days of summer, but Hilton Head Plantation artists are anything but! Whether painting under the canopy of Spanish moss and magnolia trees or down by the water to catch a beautifulsunset, you’llfindourartistscreativelypursuing their craft.

And speaking of crafts, we have several artists whose talents lie in designing jewelry. They bring a unique touch of the Lowcountry to their original and colorful wearable art. Please stop by and view these 3-D pieces in addition to the 2-D pieces‒photographs, paintings, fiberart‒hangingonthe walls!

We get together, throw the ball around, and workonbasicfundamentalsincludinghitting, fielding, and base running. Practices are fairly low key, and

generally a great way for players to work on their game and meet new friends. In terms of games, we don’t play in a league, but are able to play almost every week against

teams from Sun City and the Landings (Savannah). We play usually every Wednesday vs. Sun City and on Saturdays vs. the Landings. Games are great fun, with solid competition, and we’ve met a bunch of great people along the way. We also play in 2-3 tournaments per year, usually in Sun City. We always want to attract new players (male or female) to the team. You can practice or play as much or as little as you are comfortable with. Our team is made up of some really great people. Come and join the fun. If you’re interested, please feel free to contact Bob Huisman at [email protected] or come out, join us, or watch a future practice or game!

Big BandThe Big Band had a very successful July performance

at the Plantation House despite the rain! We moved it all indoors where it was dry and air conditioned! The Plantation House was packed as the band played for over two hours running through decades of hit tunes. Everything from Benny Goodman, Judy Garland, and Frank Sinatra to

The Beatles and Chicago, with some Frankie Valle and Joey Dee thrown in were among the big hits the band performed.

The band was really happy to play for such an enthusiastic audience. Our thanks go out to all those who attended.

We have a few weeks to prepare for our next two gigs coming up in late August and mid-September.

Dog Club

Hello, Dog Clubbers! As these hot and humid days of summer hound us, give your canine companions plenty of water and time to rest in the shade during your daily walks. Remember, the bottoms of their paws can get burned on hot pavement, so try to stroll just off the roadway. Keep your walks short, and be sure to pick upafteryourpet‒beagoodneighbor!

The HHP Dog Club had a busy day last month at Kids Kamp. Our President, Priss Calanni, prepared

and presented sessions on “Safety Around Dogs.” She taught all 138 campers, who were divided into 3 groups according to age. Each session included a discussion of an AKC video about being safe around dogs, and an opportunity for the kids to practice what they had learned by interacting with a few pooches. The activity

was a big success that we hope will become an annual event.

Future Activities on the Calendar:

Friday, September 8(raindate,9/15)‒OurannualCocktails and Dogtails event at 6:00 PM, Dolphin Head Recreation facility. Each member should bring a plate of appetizers to share, a favorite beverage (not to share), and a furry friend or two. The club will provide cups, napkins, ice, etc., as well as water and treats for our canine companions. Don’t miss this popular activity!

Tuesday, October 17‒The K-9 Corps. At Spring Lake Pavilion, 6:00 PM, an officer from the Sheriff’s Department, accompanied by his canine, will do a presentation about the use of dogs in police work. Check this space in September for more details.

Friday, October 20‒Annual Halloween Pet Parade, co-sponsored by the POA and HHP Dog Club. All residents are invited to dress their pets in costume for a parade at which prizes will be awarded in various categories. Human and dog treats will be available. Details TBA.

Want to join the club? Contact me. The fee is just $20 for a lifetime family membership.
