New H pe News November 2016 Lutheran Church www.newhopeagoura.com Living Generously Stewardship Emphasis Each person is a steward of gifts and talents and money and time. The key question is what kind of steward are you? Are you a good steward of your time, money, gifts, assets, and of your relationship with God, creation, others, and yourself? Are you wasteful or wise? Are you selfish or generous? When it comes to purchasing the things we need, stewardship involves everything from simplicity, necessity, mindful usage, and recycling! Stewardship asks about our money management — do we save, give, and spend wisely — do our spending patterns honor God? Stewardship also asks how we maintain our community — do we serve others, do we respond to people in need, does love show in our relationships? A wise steward protects his reputation and she lives to challenge and improve her natural gifts to the glory of God. In other words, a wise steward lives their faith in every aspect of their life. The steward applies Christian principles to the way they live life each day. In this series we will look at four areas of Living Generously: Counting blessings, Assessing gifts, Challenging ourselves, and Growing in grace. Notice at the center of the logo is the cross: reminding us that Jesus is the model of the generous life, the center of our faith and life. First Step: Count Your Blessings Spend a few minutes this week considering ALL of the blessings, assets, strengths, opportunities, and gifts you’ve been given. Start with the obvious ones and then challenge yourself to think about the ways difficulty have also given you blessing. See if you can come up with a list of 100 Blessings. Live

Living Generously Stewardship EmphasisEach person is a steward of gifts and talents andmoney and time. Notice at the center of the logois the cross: reminding us that Jesus is the model of the generous life, the center of our faith and life.

Second: Assess Your GiftsDo you know your gifts? Do you know your strengths and the way in which God could bless others through you?Do you have a sharp mind for analyzing data, are you a people person, do you have a strong back, or enjoy figuringthings out? Are you blessed by material assets: do you have a beautiful home for hosting a Bible Study or anexchange student? Are you good at making things grow or love children? How can God use those gifts to bless thelives of others? What challenges have made you a better person? Take a spiritual gifts assessment this week.

Next: Challenge YourselfIf you have been doing the tasks in this “Live Generously” stewardship emphasis you know you are richly blessedand incredibly gifted. Now, ask God to show you how to be of some good use to God’s kingdom andGod’s people, the church. Don’t only give thanks for blessings and gifts; let those gifts show and let those blessings bless others. What’s one way you can bless others with the gift of yourself? How is God challenging you?

Lastly: Grow in GraceSince you know you are blessed and gifted, since you’ve challenged yourself to be of service to those around you, undoubtedly you’ve seen God work around you, in others, or even in yourself. Now, give thanks to God for yourgifts and blessings properly used and employed tomaximizeGod’s blessings for the enrichment of yourself, others, creation and for God’s glory. Having worked these steps, you are on your way to become a good steward.

Pledging Support for the CongregationIn November wewill be askingmembers of the church to estimate their giving to the congregation for 2017. Watchfor the pledge cardwith the “LivingGenerously” logo. There are several ways thatmaking a pledge to support NewHope helps. First, it assists our leaders in creating amore accurate budget. Secondly, it helps youmanage your giftsto the church on a regular and recurring basis. Givingmoney challenges us tomore wiselymanage our gifts. If youaccept the challenge to be a wise steward by giving a tithe (give 10% to God’s work in the world) and saving a tithe(paying yourself 10%) you’ll face decisions around how to spend or save the rest of your money. When we areintentional and disciplined we do a better job managing everything, including money. Finally, tithing and savingand spending (10%/10%/80%) in a Christly manner challenges our dependences, grows our trust, and shrewdlyhelps us plans for a future where we can provide for ourselves and others.

This year we will also be talking about planned gifts and funding our “mission and ministry” endowment to helpsupport the work of New Hope for generations to come! We hope you will consider your church and spiritualcommunity inyourwill andestate plan. Please consider apledge to theministryof your church in2017andaplannedgift for the future.

Lay Ministry – Community Connections

Thank you to all who are bringing your plastic grocery bags. Keep them coming! Merle Zbrog isbusily working on the sleeping mats. Others are folding, cutting and making the plarn. If you

would like to help, just ask Merle or Marsha and we’ll show you how you can help.

Do you have a closet full of plastic grocery bags? Why not put those bags to good use?

Merle Zbrog recently heard of a group of women who turn those plastic bags into sleeping mats for thehomeless. Inwinter, homeless shelters in the area are often filled to capacity, leaving people no optionbut to sleep on the floor. The mats provide some comfort to those who need it most. Many homelessare sleeping on the ground and the plarn (plastic yarn) sleeping mats provide an extra layer betweenthe sleeper and the ground, are water-resistant, and somewhat insulating. They’re also lightweightwhich makes them quite portable.

The prayer shawl ministry is willing to get started. All we need is your bags. Please bring your cleanplastic bags to church. There is a bin in the hallway. Each 3 foot by 6 foot mat requires approximately600 plastic bags. If you're willing to help make the "plarn," talk with Merle. We'll take all the helpoffered.

This is a perfect way to upcycle, using something so common that, after all, won’t decompose for upto 1,000 years in a landfill — as well as a wonderful act of giving. This was the Facebook post that strucka chord with Merle. http://www.wpsdlocal6.com/story/33059644/i-am-local-6-bag-ladies-make-plastic-bags-into-beds-for-homeless

Pictured with Wayne and Phyllis Rickert are ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth A. Eaton and noted PBStraveloguehost andwriter Rick Steves. TheRickertswere inChicago recently at the invitationof theELCA’sCampaign Steering Committee as participants on a Panel Discussion that focused onwhat had inspired themto become donors to the Campaign for the ELCA.

Rick Steves, who youmay know fromhis PBS European travelogues, is a lifelong Lutheranwho, as a personalministry, has produced a one-hour special commemorating the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Rickwas the guest speaker at a dinner hosted by Bishop Eatonwhere he spoke of the development of the projectand presented the first public screening of the program to dinner attendees. The special entitled “RickSteves’ Luther and the Reformation” will air on PBS in January, however, you don’t have to wait untilJanuary to see it. After seeing the screening at the dinner, the Rickerts returned home with an advancecopy of the special which we will use to kick-off a yearlong celebration of the 500th anniversary of theReformation.

Please join us for fellowship, dessert and our ownadvanced screening of this Reformation special on SundayNovember 13th at 7 PM at the church. This is a wonderful opportunity to refresh your knowledge of theReformation and, perhaps, to learn more than you previously might have known about the events leadingup to, during and after the Reformation. The special is an excellent summation of events as we prepareto celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation throughout the coming year.

PLEASE SIGN UP ON THE BULLETIN BOARD IN THE NARTHEX IF YOU AREABLE TO COME. WE NEED TO PLAN ON HOW MUCH DESSERT IS NEEDED!

For the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, we are taking the story of Martin Luther and his teachings on the road! In a series of paired lectures, one very introductory and the other more in-depth, Bishop Guy Erwin will carry Luther’s message all around the Southwest California Synod. So come hear one, or come to all: the in-depth lecture will be different every time! Lunch will be served between the lectures. So save the dates!
