The training was interesting. It is important to have service user involvement as not all Doctors and general nurses are educated in mental health issues and some are unsure how to deal with various situations that may present to them (due to a person suffering mental ill health) and they can sometimes fail to understand that what works for one patient may not for another. Therefore if service users are involved in recruitment we can make sure they have a good understanding of mental health issues. I enjoyed listening to the professional people giving talks and group work where we discussed ways in which we could improve the recruitment process and practicing interviewing in a panel.”- NB

• Both resource centres have continued to provide a wide range of courses with partner agencies including; Youth Mental Health First Aid, Anger Management, Money Management and Food Hygiene alongside our regular weekly activities.

Investors In People“New Horizons is a small organisation which punches well above its weight in terms of achievements and outcomes”.This was the conclusion of Sue Rowlands, Investors in People Specialist Assessor for Investors in People Wales following a day spent interviewing the Chair, the staff team and a group of volunteers in December 2013.

The Report recognises that ‘New Horizons provides support for those experiencing mental health problems in Aberdare and the surrounding area and is a well-known and well-established part of the community. Over recent years it has overcome many challenges as an organisation and at this point in time it is in good health financially, recognised by achieving the corporate status of CIO; and in terms of its people as recognised by its achievement at Bronze level Small Workplace Award (Corporate Health Standard). New Horizons is committed to challenging negative perceptions surrounding mental health problems and supporting its members to develop confidence and skills. In the past year NH2, a social enterprise offering web and graphic design, has been set up; this in included in the scope of the assessment. Mental Health Recruitment Training As a partner organisation of Interlink New Horizons supports and encourages service user involvement in the community. Training and Partnership working The Jennifer Vyle ShowIt’s a dark stormy night, rolling thunder and pounding rain. Then you hear a knock at the door…it’s a young women. She says she needs help shelter from the storm. She says she just needs to make one phone call, and you let her in…But is she all she appears to be?...Certainly not! It’s Jennifer Vyle! Hold on to your secrets; hide your issues, because this is reality TV in your own living room!‘It’s The Jennifer Vyle Show’ humorously challenges the stigma surrounding mental health and well-being. It’s an engaging and entertaining production directed by Carys Parry, ably assisted by a strong cast of Shane Nickels, Lizzie Rogan, Stephen Hickman and Amy Griggs, costume designer RhiannHoulihan, stage manager Manda Clare-Graham and set built by Headstrong. With support from the Arts Council of Wales, this play is touring community venues from March 10th to April 12th 2014 and runs for 1 hour and 20 minutes. It is suitable for audiences 11+Further details of the production can be obtained from Jade Emanuel at Spectacle Theatre (01443) 430 700 [email protected]. “You’d be bonkers to miss it!”- Spectacle Theatre

Staff, volunteers and service users from both centres attended productions by Spectacle Theatre in March. There were many twists and turns that kept you thinking. The cast were brilliant and after the show a discussion was held regarding what the audience views were on mental health; whether the show delivered what it was intended to do. Below are some of the viewers’ thoughts:-

“I really enjoyed, It portrayed a dysfunctional family. It was hard hitting as it reminded me of the past. The issues were dealt with and acted really well. It was very educational for people who haven’t experienced mental health problems and I was surprised at the discussions after the show about how few people realise we all have mental health.”-SP

“Very good - the acting was exceptional, especially the young girl.” – JR NH Volunteer

“It was better than the Jeremy Kyle show as they all had teeth and dressed smartly. It was great that Carys asked questions to get people talking afterwards. It was also good to see that they showed more than one mental health issue.”-JD

Workplace Health Award Schemes Small Workplace Health AwardNew Horizons was very pleased to be one of ten organizations that received the Small Workplace Health Award (Bronze level) at a Welsh Government ceremony in March at the Liberty Stadium in Swansea. The award was presented by Dr Patricia Reardon, Director of Health & Healthcare Improvement, Public Health Wales.

Gill Malpas (Chair), Janet Whiteman (Director) and Tracy Thomas (Service Manager Rhondda) accepted the Award on behalf of New Horizons and said “It is an honour for a small local charity such as New Horizons to have received a national award and confirms that the practices we adhere to are recognized as good practice”.

The Small Workplace Health Award is one of the Healthy Working Wales programmes and is the

national mark of quality for health and wellbeing aimed at organisations employing fewer than 50 people. It is a developmental process, based on good practice and improvement and can be used to support activities that promote the health and wellbeing of employees. The award has been developed to reduce ill-health issues such as stress and musculoskeletal disorders in the workplace, as well as promote healthy lifestyle behaviours which should help to improve the overall performance of the organisation and productivity levels.Organisations can reach three levels of the award – Bronze, Silver and Gold.

Alongside the therapeutic groups (eg music and art) that run in the Cynon centre on a weekly basis New Horizons has provided Anger and Money Management courses(facilitated by the WEA) and Smoking Cessation (facilitated by Public Health). New Horizons is extremely pleased to provide these courses as all three subjects can be highly relevant for people suffering from mental health problems.

Anger Management Course - the course looked at identifying the difference between emotions and behaviours, recognition that anger can be used both in a positive manner and in a negative manner, helped identify external and internal changes that happen to our bodies when we become angry, showed that anger can be controlled and helped to identify the differences between being passive, aggressive and assertive. Due to the high demand for the course New Horizons will be offering two additional Anger Management courses both of which are already full to capacity and we intend to provide the course again later on in the year.

“The Course was light-hearted even though it was quite a serious subject. The course taught you some good tips in recognising and managing anger and we jelled well together as a group.” –JD

Money Management Course looked at how budget your money, ways in which we can make savings and an understanding of investments and savings.

“The money management course made me more aware of how much money I could be saving, and about alternative purchasing procedures and the benefits of saving.”-GL

Smoking Cessation Classes - are currently being provided at Aberdare.

Superb Fundraising Event

On Friday 14th March volunteers Gemma Lewis and Joanne Davies saw their hard work come alive with a fantastic charity show that they had organised in aid of the New Horizons youth project.

The evening raised over £300 and due to the volunteers’ gallant effort and initiative to raise funds for the project they attend, the New Horizons management committee decided to reward their effort by releasing a further £500 towards the project of their choice. Watch this space to find out what good use the youth project put the money to.

New Horizons would like to say a big thank you to Lloyd Bailey, Ceri Haggett and DJ Phil for giving up their free time and providing wonderful entertainment for a brilliant cause and to our patron Boyd Clack for his continuous support and attending the event.

Jo and Gemma’s account:“The evening was enjoyable and fun to organise as It was for a good cause. Everyone enjoyed themselves and was nice to have everyone together and talking to each other. Everyone was made to feel welcome and nobody was left out. The artist and shows were all kind to give up their time along with the venue who did not charge us either. Jo was up on stage with the artist doing the air guitar. We are really grateful for the support and are proud of each other for organising the night”

Dramatics at New Horizons

New Horizons’ Youth Project Aberdare

Thanks to Interlink and GwirVol funding youth led grants drama workshops have been held with the youth project over 10 weeks with Spectacle Theatre to help to build confidence and bring out their creative talent. The young people in the youth project highlighted a lack of understanding being shown to them when presenting with self harm injuries at A&E and have created a short film to highlight the issue which is hopefully going to be used in self harm training.

“Spectacle Theatre has allowed us all to work together, build our confidence, we have been able to share personal experiences. It allowed us to all work as a team and create a short film to hopefully share our views to help improve services available and for those who are involved in dealing with mental health patients.few certificates.” It has given us all insight into how we view the treatment that we receive, and we could help with filming etc if we did not want to physically be in the DVD. It has been a great experience and a fab team to work with. Thank you for all your help!”

“It was good because we didn’t have to put on a show like we do every day to hide how we are really feeling. It built our confidence and felt good to make a film because we can make NHS staff and others realise they need to change their attitude to those who self harm and will hopefully teach them a better understanding of the subject”

Peer Mentoring To help develop the new youth project in the Rhondda members of the Aberdare youth project will be offering peer support to the group. To help develop the project one of the volunteers from the Aberdare youth project attended peer mentor training through Interlink that included basic counselling skills and listening skills, to help develop the project.

“It was an interesting course, very useful to attend, it made me aware of how you should be sat and how to listen more appropriately.”

A massive congratulations to Rebecca who attends the youth project, on winning Endsleigh Student of the Year. New Horizons is really proud of Rebecca’s achievements and looking forward to the skills she can bring to Peer Mentoring

Coleg y Cymoedd student Rebecca Thomas, 20 years from Trecynon, Aberdare has been named Endsleigh Student of the Year, at this year’s two-day annual NUS Wales Conference which was held at the Pierhead, Cardiff.

Student Union representatives from across Wales gathered to set the priorities for the year ahead, debate the future of NUS Wales and elect new leaders. The event marks the 40th anniversary of NUS Wales and the annual democratic event provides a great place to network with students and activists from across Wales. Delegates also had the opportunity to hear from inspirational speakers.

The highlight of the Conference was the NUS Wales Awards Ceremony which recognised excellence in academic, vocational and extra - curricular areas. From a strong field of over 90 nominations Rebecca’s contribution to the college was recognised, giving her the prestigious title – Endsleigh Student of the Year.

Rebecca’s contribution to the college has been made as a representative on the Learner Voice Forum and she has been extremely active in her role spending hours of her own time making a difference for her fellow students.

In addition, Rebecca has been working closely with the New Horizons Mental Health Team and Friends R us Support Group, accompanying learners to sessions, arranging trips and generally encouraging and supporting them.

Welfare Officer Laura Wilson stated “The College is delighted that Rebecca received this much deserved award – Endsleigh Student of the Year. She has made a huge contribution to the college, especially with her work with mental health. She’s an enthusiastic representative and is always keen to help and support various events at the college. Our Learner Voice Forum is taken seriously and our learner’s views are central to the decisions taken by the Senior Management Team at the college”.

Rebecca said “I am honored to have been nominated for the Student of the Year Award and would like to thank Laura Wilson for nominating me. Through my role as Student rep., I have been given the opportunity to get involved with so many events and projects. My work with New Horizons Mental Health team and Friends R us has given me an insight into the issues experienced by some of our learners and I’m pleased to be able to offer them support and make a difference in their lives”.

Beth Button, Deputy President NUS Wales said

“The panel of judges were really impressed by the level of dedication Rebecca has shown to improving the lives of her fellow students in her college. Having worked with Rebecca this year I can safely say the work that she does is inspirational and she is truly deserving of this accolade”.

Partnership workingBelow is a case study from Laura Wilson the welfare officer at Coleg y Cymoedd. This emphasises the benefit of partnership working for the students. We are also pleased that due to our partnership working the Jennifer Vyle Show by Spectacle Theatre was shown at the college and the New Horizons Youth Project had an information stall at the event.

Case Study “I just wanted to comment on how well I feel we work together and the impact New Horizons have made on the college. The youth group is highly beneficial in particular and has ensured that students are able to continue their studies and progress onto employment or further studies including higher education. This ensures a sense of achievement and increases confidence in our students therefore benefitting mental health and well-being.

The support provided by your team is amazing with access to assessment and counseling. I know many of our learners’ have developed a close friendship with their peers and have arranged many a social occasion together.

As a professional your services have provided an excellent establishment whereby I am able to refer students and know that the age group is appropriate. Indeed I have referred many of our learners onto you and the feedback is excellent with all students confirming how they value the services.

The same applies to the workshops held from self-esteem to anger management. I am also looking forward to working with you on the forthcoming ‘Jennifer Vyle’ Show.I look forward to continuing our working relationships and building on our existing foundations.”

Laura Wilson

Ruby Wax Sane New World Tour 2014 at the Coliseum Theatre, AberdareRuby Wax brought her stand-up act to the Coliseum Theatre in Aberdare. She talked outspokenly and honestly about her battle with depression. This goes a long way in helping reduce the stigma that people with mental health issues can suffer. A group of staff, management committee, volunteers and members from New Horizons went to the show.

Below are some reviews on the show:“I went to see Ruby Wax. It did help in lots of ways. What stood out for me was the fact my psychiatrist has been trying to get through to me. You can be mentally well but your thoughts and busy head can still go on, you have to untangle it. What did annoy me was she didn’t understand my point, which were you can have the best drug treatment, best support worker and the best care plan but a part of you has got to want help. You have to push hard and stand up and fight”. – DM

“Ruby Wax in my opinion was very good. I was nice for her to share her mental health problems. I learnt a lot from what she had to say as it came from a person who coped and came to terms with her problems his helps others to cope and has a positive message about recovery.” - SJ

Summary of Courses and groups provided Jan-March 2014 It has been a busy few months at our Rhondda centre with courses and groups. There have been Money Management, Walk Leaders and Food Hygiene courses to name but a few. In the coming months we offer a Prepare to Care course

Art WorkshopNew Horizons and Arts is Community have been working in partnership since autumn 2013. Art is Community have been offering art & craft workshops at Apple Tree Stores once a week

It has been a busy time for those participating and they have created lovely items Mosaic Mirrors (as you can see Matthew demonstrating his work), tea pot cosy’s, felt soaps and Christmas stockings to name but a few. Everyone within the group has become very supportive and encourages each other, building self confidence and belief in themselves and their capabilities.A few have taken the initiative to start producing items themselves at home. Once finished they are bringing them back to New Horizons so that they can be sold to raise funds for the charity; lavender hearts, cards and felt mobile phone holders. This aspect of the group shows how successful the Art Workshop is, as self esteems are increased to a level which people are finding hidden strength in their creativity skills.

Up and Coming Courses Prepare to Care – Facilitated by Kay Maybank from Merthyr & the Valleys Mind. Starting on Wednesday 12th May for 6 weeks this course aims to help the learner gain a qualification, increase understanding and confidence. If you are a carer or want to work in care, then this course will be beneficial to you. For further information or to enrol please contact the centre on 01443 681881.

Partnership workingAge Cymru - In January Health Initiatives Officer Rhian Pearce came to consult and show their new 50+ Online Health Check Facility. Rhian has been meeting groups and asking their opinion on the leaflet design, plus showing how the website can be used to do a self assessment health check on line. Whereby individuals add details about themselves and answer a series of questions, once all the data has been collected a report will summarise the persons health and advice is given on whether they need to consult their G.P. or not. The site will be officially launched sometime in 2014. Following on from this New Horizons are in talks to work with the 50+ forum to provide mental health outreach in the 50+ health checks.

Mental Health Support Focus GroupThe Focus Group at ATS has provided information and feedback on issues surrounding mental health for the Mental Health Support website. The range of items has been - life journeys, film/song reviews, a Christmas Acrostic Poem. We have also held discussions on the “Time to Talk Day” regarding how the public view and treat people who suffer with mental health issues. Join us every Thursday for the Focus Group 3pm- 4pm.

Since July 2013 New Horizons has been working in partnership with ‘Too Good To Waste’ by holding monthly Wellbeing sessions at the Ynyshir branch for staff and volunteers.

The sessions offer support, advice & signposting with regards to mental health and emotional wellbeing. This could be for the person themselves or for family and friends. The sessions highlight that many people from all walks of life may suffer themselves or may know someone who suffers with mental health or emotional well being issues. Some of those who have attended the sessions have also attended courses (eg confidence building) at the New Horizons’ resource centre in Dinas and have also benefitted from our knowledge of the mental health support services in RCT.

Cases study provided by Jennifer Evans Volunteer Coordinator at Too Good to Waste“Due to the evidence of need for this support ‘Too Good To Waste’ has asked New Horizons to also offer the Wellbeing sessions at their Aberdare branch which hopefully will commence in the coming months.Dealing with a mental health issue is extremely personal to each individual, as is the level of support that is provided so that the individual can then participate in a activity outside of their comfort zone. toogoodtowaste provides volunteers, from all walks of life, the opportunity to gain confidence, learn new skills and become part of a team while gaining actual work experience within a certain field. Therefore, the organisation recognises that some volunteers need extra support which can only be provided by an expert, such as New Horizons. Working with Tracy and Kristy from New Horizons has opened the door to overcoming the stigma that can sometimes be attached to dealing with mental health issues. By having the Well Being Sessions held on site in a relaxed and informal atmosphere it has enabled toogoodtowaste to offer this extra support to our volunteers at their own request and positively work towards breaking down those barriers.

Partnership working - Wellbeing sessions in the community

New Horizons team understand the difficulties some of our volunteers who suffer with mental health issues, face on a daily basis and are able to identify and provide an action plan to support and assist that individual, for example by offering courses that would help them with their confidence and self-esteem.

Working with New Horizons to deliver support through the Well-Being Sessions has been a positive step forward for the benefit of the individual and the organisation and we look forward to a long working partnership in order to support volunteers.”

Following the successful launch of our Youth Project in Aberdare in 2013 there appeared to be a demand for a similar service in the Rhondda

In response to this New Horizons launched a young person’s project at our centre at Dinas in January 2014. Those who have attended began the Routes to Recovery course facilitated by Gofal. The course aims to help people to understand their mental health, know what services are available to them and what their rights are as mental health service user

Quotes from the young people on the course

The Young Persons project started in January with the Routes to Recovery course and we asked the young people for their thoughts on the course. Here are some of the comments they gave;“It has given me a better understanding of my mental health”.“I realise I am not alone and that there are others the same as me and I am able to be confident is talking about my mental health and how it affects me”.“It has given me a better understanding of mental health services and what the different services do to support people”.For more information about the Rhondda Youth Project or to Refer someone 18-25 suffering from mental health problems please call the Tracy Thomas Project manager on (01443) 681881.
